Any way to export site to HTML directory?
by Frederic Faure 01 Nov '01

01 Nov '01

Hello, Looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer until there are dedicated clients to work against a Zope server. In the mean time, is there a way to just use Zope as a personal and convenient repository, and tell it to extract an entire site into HTML so it can be uploaded to a remote Apache server through FTP, ie. an open-source alternative to UserLand Radio or FogCreek's CityDesk? It'd be kind of a pain to have to launch Zope on my workstation every time I wanted to work on a page, but since it looks like there's no open-source alternative yet... Thx FF.

I just downloaded the zope binary and ran the install script and I got the following error. What does this mean?? Zope appears to be running fine with no problems, but I am certainly concerned that this occured on the install. replicating stand-alone applications
by Jerry McRae 01 Nov '01

01 Nov '01

I have three question about moving stand-alone apps into Zope. If anyone has answers or suggestions, it would save hours of experimenting. My description might seem a bit vague, I am trying to keep the actual complexity out of this message. What I have now is a pure Python application that allows sets of users to define many parameters, kept in lists of tables, and more complex structures. They then specify a input and output file (simple case, 10-10,000 lines of a CSV text file). When they press the calculate button, it adds the input file to the existing data (in a permanent non-SQL file), processes lot and lots of calculations on the date, out creates the output file. All the parameters are currently stored in multiple attributes in a single class, which uses Pickle to save and load one copy for each client. 1) Are the good, easy, or best way of moving or accessing a Python container class from a stand alone program? The class has several attributes which are containers for any number of sets of complex structures. Example of accessing a specific row/ column element directly (which I don't really do) would be: Myclass.payRates['normal']['level']['table'][1,1] and with the Myclass.operators array, the list of objects it would contain would have a different format. My idea was just to read the class in an External Method from the pickle file it is stored in, then have some Zope scripting to pass parameters to the method telling it which array to return. But would this cause a re-un-pickle each time the External Method is called? I have not found any products, messages, or how-to's that address these next two questions that I have. Are they even *possible* from a web application, even if the client is assured of having Python? 2) I would like the option of reading the input file and permanent files from the *users* local hard drive, and the same for writing the output and permanent (modified) file. 3) The calculation process is intense and could be long (1-10 hours). The *ideal* solution would be to have the calculation program running on the clients computer. That way it isn't dependent on nor bogging down the server. I would just have to pass the complex structure of parameters and arrays to the browser's computer. Any ideas? If you made it this far, thanks for reading! --Jerry

External Methods: Object behavior different in 2.4.2 ?
by Doyon, Jean-Francois 01 Nov '01

01 Nov '01

Hello, I have an External Method that imports a module that in turn imports a Python/C library ... (A SWIG'ified software with shadow classes). This used to work fine in 2.4.1 ... But now in 2.4.2 I am having problems: It seems I can only run it once! If I hit refresh or something like that, I get the following error: Traceback (innermost last): File /usr/local/Zope-2.4.2/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 223, in publish_module File /usr/local/Zope-2.4.2/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 187, in publish File /usr/local/Zope-2.4.2/lib/python/Zope/__init__.py, line 226, in zpublisher_exception_hook (Object: Zope) File /usr/local/Zope-2.4.2/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 171, in publish File /usr/local/Zope-2.4.2/lib/python/ZPublisher/mapply.py, line 160, in mapply (Object: drawmap) File /usr/local/Zope-2.4.2/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 112, in call_object (Object: drawmap) File /usr/local/Zope-2.4.2/lib/python/Products/ExternalMethod/ExternalMethod.py, line 274, in __call__ (Object: drawmap) (Info: ((400, 340, 'left'), {}, (400, 340, 'left'))) File /usr/local/Zope-2.4.2/Extensions/mapserver.py, line 6, in drawmap File /usr/lib/python2.1/mapscript.py, line 1041, in __setattr__ TypeError: Type error. Expected _p_mapObj And on the console: Exception exceptions.TypeError: 'Type error. Expected _p_mapObj' in <method mapObj.__del__ of mapObj instance at 0x895bafc> ignored Here is the code, it is short: from mapscript import * import tempfile def drawmap(width=400,height=340,align="left"): mymap = mapObj("/home/mapdata/nac/177.map") mymap.width = width mymap.height = height myimage = mymap.draw() oldtempdir = tempfile.tempdir tempfile.tempdir = "" mytempfile = tempfile.mktemp() tempfile.tempdir = oldtempdir msSaveImage(myimage,"/usr/local/apache/htdocs/tempimages/"+mytempfile,0,0,0, 0) return "<IMG SRC=http://localhost/tempimages/"+mytempfile+" ALIGN="+align+" BORDER=0>" Note the "mapObj" called "mymap" ... It does all the work. From what I see above, once the object is instanciated, there's a problem destroying it, or instantiating a new one ... This might be why I get th error above. Funny thing is this worked fine in 2.4.1 ... Is this a bug, or did some sort of behavior change with 2.4.2? And if so how do I get around it? I tried adding a "mymap = None" here and there to force the object to be destroyed after/before use, but that didn't seem to help. Any ideas? RE: [Zope] zope operations atomic?

Example: To count the number of files uploaded to my site I set an index as an attribute to a Folder. These are large files so they take some time to upload. What happens after two people upload at once does my index only get rolled back or do the files uploaded also get rolled back? This is what I meant anyway - I will read the ZODB3 that Dieter mentioned -----Original Message----- From: Chris McDonough [mailto:chrism@zope.com] Sent: Wednesday, October 31, 2001 1:44 PM To: Clark OBrien; k_vertigo(a)yahoo.com; zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] zope operations atomic? > I don't want to be dense but it sounds like for each thread a deep > copy of the items it accesses- Folder for example- is made. Though it sounds like you have a valid concern, I can't seem to pick it out of that series of words. ;-) What is it that you're worried about? - C

zope operations atomic?
by Clark OBrien 31 Oct '01

31 Oct '01

Hi: I cannot find documentation that would tell me how zope manages thread synchronization For instance: If there is a python script that adds and removes properties from a folder what happens if there are two http requests to launch the script. Does one thread get a lock on the folder? does on thread get a lock on the Folder property? Any insight would be appreciated? Clark

'summary' metadata in ZCatalog
by a32955＠pop-server.nc.rr.com 31 Oct '01

31 Oct '01

By default, ZCatalog creates a few metadata elements: id, title, summary, bobobase_modification_time, etc. In the results objects returned by a search of my site, the 'summary' metadata is always blank. The other metadata elements always have something store in them, but 'summary' is always blank. How do I get ZCatalog to store a summary of each object during indexing? Thanks for any replies. Joe
