Even though not all types are supported natively (since Boa has no way of knowing), it is easy to register new types. Mmhh, maybe I should write a small Python Product allowing Boa to get this type of information... Oh, for all the people that have not yet tried Boa Constructor; of course it does DTML highlighting as well.... BTW, I think Boa (and the troubles it has in integrating Zope) is a good case study for an alternative interface and we can see how hard it is to write a new one for Zope. DCO2 beta 5 problem.
by Geir Bkholt 24 Sep '01

Hi We're having a weird problem with the DCO2 beta5 adapter: It seems like it leaves connections open, creating new ones as it pleases, gradually leaving more connection open , though inactive.. Zope doesn't report anything wrong, although if we check Oracle, the number of open (inactive) connections to the Zope seem to grow at a steady pace, and in about a day and a half we reach the maximum number of open connections (400), and need to kill them off by hand. We can find no connection to specific method calls doing this, and it only happens when using the DCO2 through Zope with ZsqlMethods. No problem when using it directly through Python. We are currently only using it for a simple news-publishing system, but will soon have to escalate it to Authentication and other intensive applications, - so obviously we fear for the stability of our system if the number of connections should grow at a much faster pace... Anyone experienced anything similar? Any thoughts on possible reasons or fixes ? -- Geir Bækholt web-developer/zopatista geirh(a)funcom.com funcom oslo | webdev-team

RE: [Zope] LoginManager or exUserFolder
by Mayers, Philip J 24 Sep '01

What are membership services then? Regarding the remote method - Duh! Yes, of course (brain spasm - obviously the word remote threw me off the scent...) One other thing I did run into is that roles in my user source are a separate table with a foreign key back to the username, rather than space-separated as a column in the user table - for that reason, the default SQL user source wouldn't work for me (since as it happens I do store the crypt in the table at the moment - so near and yet so far). I probably could have done a fiendish CREATE VIEW... but I had about ten minutes of downtime to get the site from 2.3 to 2.4.1! I'll take a look at it again in a test setup. Thanks for the reply - it's always reassuring to know that a product is being actively pursued and maintained! Irrelevant for me. No, it is completely independant of CMF. | What I really have a problem with is the structure of the default/example | methods return a crypted password into Zope, whereas my LoginManager has a | userAuthenticate call that jumps into an external method and uses PAM to | check the password. Each authentication source can define a remoteAuthMethod method that is called with the username and the password provided by the user. You can then do whatever you want with it from that point on. This is how the IMAP and POP3 authentication methods that mithro wrote work, (http://www.zope.org/Members/mithro/zExtraExAuths) exUserFolder is setup in such a way that these can be seperate products, so you don't have to work in the exUserFolder source tree, and you don't have to install them into the exUserFolder tree for them to work. The User object specifically checks for remoteAuthMethod in the currentAuthSource and uses that instead of trying to authenticate using the supplied crypt method. For usAuthSource which is the one extendible by creating your own methods inside Zope, this is commented out by default. It's a simple matter of editing usAuthSource.py, uncommenting the region, and defining usRemoteAuthMethod, in your set of methods which can be an external method, or a pythonScript, or any other callable Zope object. I don't see how you can claim that it's a lot of work, it doesn't seem to be any more work than providing a method for LoginManager. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to shove XUF down your throat, I'm just concerned you have the wrong idea. If you think it would work better another way, I'm all ears, after all that's how the Remote Authentication Facilities got in there in the first place. -- Totally Holistic Enterprises Internet| | Andrew Milton The Internet (Aust) Pty Ltd | | ACN: 082 081 472 ABN: 83 082 081 472 | M:+61 416 022 411 | Carpe Daemon PO Box 837 Indooroopilly QLD 4068 |akm(a)theinternet.com.au|

Performance of dtml-in and ZCatalog
by Oliver Erlewein 24 Sep '01

24 Sep '01

Hi I'm having performance problems with Zope 2.4.0. I migrated from 2.3.2 (don't know wether the performance there was better). My system runs on Solaris-Intel with a 1Ghz processor and 512Mb RAM (I'd say that quite a big system). I use Apache for the Virtual Hosting and SSL encryption. When I have large dtml-in's or a ZCatalog (about 2000 Items) search then it takes quite a while for the response. This would not be so bad if it were not for all other user-sessions freezing up aswell. I can't see any tuning possibilities on the programming / frontend side. My guess is, that it has something to do memory allocation (zope desn't use all of the 512Mb although it could) or that there are not enough treads,.... I have no clue of where to look. Maybe somebody has had simmilar experiences. With that kind of hardware Zope should be able to handle at least 20 conurrent users. As is I don't stand a chance. So please HELP! Thanx! If you want the following behaviour: take a specialized template if it exists, otherwise take a standard template, then you have several options: * use "hasattr" to check for existance: <dtml-let selectedTemplate="_.hasattr(Special,'template') and Special.template or Standard.template"> .... </dtml-let> * use techniques similar to <http://www.dieter.handshake.de/pyprojects/zope/Localizer.py> * use acquisition magic: Templates/ ...standardTemplates... SpecializedTemplates/ .... > * Second, when i call the Content Folder, it is needed to apply the template > to it.
