Use Homesite (was RE: [Zope] Great html-applet ( commercial )...)

Try HomeSite! Works great, easy to use and customize, save and drop in hunks of repeatable code (snippets), create your own Zope toolbars of often-used tags, etc, etc.... And the best thing?!?! Unlimited UNDO and REDO! Open a file, make a change, hit F12 for a browse-view in the same window for a look. If its not right, or breaks something just hit F12 to go back to edit and CNTL-Z (undo) back to previous and save it. Saves a lot of time and offers a nice security blanket when editing live, production stuff. And the other best thing?!?! Multiple editing windows open at a time and search-and-replace on them all. AND print out your code! I like seeing my code on paper. Built in help, wizards for most everything, CSS editor, html-tag popup helpers, etc,... Some things I have found: Works on all DTML docs and methods and ZSQL methods. Some things don't open. Easy to rename files. Not so easy to create new files (that I have found). Just keep a ZMI window open for regular management stuff. Gives new life to working with Zope files, if on the Windows platform. Just my $.02 Allen -----Original Message----- From: Philippe Jadin [mailto:all@123piano.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 01, 2001 6:33 PM To: Heimo Laukkanen Cc: zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] Great html-applet ( commecial ) to be used as a content-editing tool with Zope > > >wysiwyg-html editor applet, which was distributed in BSD-licence. Anyone >interested to join in this? > >Anyone interested about this how-to? > I'd be really interested! What we really need is some kind of wysiwyg tool to edit content in zope instead of the *non wrapping* text areas provided by zope. Why those are non-wrap-able? I have no idea, and for sure it's a problem (btw, if it's hotfix-able, Id' like to know how to do this). I see no way to add simple formatting to a browser based text area. So the only way is for now : ftp, java applets, or IE5+ html edit component. Script Python et ODBC
by giquel valerie 03 Aug '01

Merci Solenn et Valérie ===== ___________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? -- Vos albums photos en ligne, Yahoo! Photos : http://fr.photos.yahoo.com

Zope v OpenACS and nonprofit application developers
by Michael Ward 03 Aug '01

03 Aug '01

Hello all: I work with a nonprofit organization that helps other nonprofits with technology. We do everything from developing a free desktop database application, www.ebase.org, to providing strategic consulting to progressive activist groups on how to further their mission. Currently, there is a very active discussion about building applications for the nonprofit world in open source tools. 2 platforms are being discussed OpenACS and Zope. The discussion has quite a few champions/developers of OpenACS, but there aren't any people that seem to have real experience with Zope. A couple have played with it or done small projects. The discussion is taking place on a listserver sponsored by the Nonprofit Open Source Intiative, www.nosi.net, which isn't much of anything beside the discussion that I am referring to. If there are some people in this community that have an interest in nonprofit organizations and would be willing to share their expertise on zope, it would be greatly appreciated at this important decisionmaking time for us. Not to mention I think there will be some development power spawned out of this discussion. So...You can subscribe from here => http://www.nosi.net/mailman/listinfo/nosi-discussion . (If you look at the archives, the discussion gets interesting around the post with the subject "The problem of picking a programming language/framework". And honestly, I don't think Zope sucks as badly as the OpenACS people say ; ) (That is a total joke trying to bait people into participating.) m -- Michael Ward Senior Consultant TechRocks, A supporting organization to the Rockefeller Family Fund mward(a)techrocks.org 212-812-4255 http://www.techrocks.org

I don't offer up my site as an excellent of proof-of-scalability: our hit count is moderate (~30,000 hits/month), and our transfer/bandwidth/etc. would be too. (Of course, the fact that this all runs on a machine built from bubblegum and spare parts yet still is stable and running is pretty cheerful). I just offer my site as an example of a medium-sized site (~600 pages), and one that I'd be happy to explain to anyone that cared to listen. [ nb: I've been considering opening up parts of our site backedn to the community, probably through a mirrored version. I don't think our design is groundbreaking or particularly clever; however, one of the frustrations I had in starting w/Zope was that there was no decent-sized example to look at and play with. Of course, my concern is that exposing the internals of my site to strangers will reveal some security holes that I should have predicted. If anyone would be willing to do some security auditing in advance of the opening, I'd be willing to go ahead w/this idea. ] If you want to proof of scalability, look at the info about zope.org, which serves roughly one bajillion visitors per week. They have a great chart about how they do this, how they load-balance, etc. CBS New York is also a Zope site, and I'll bet they get more hits than we do. And, if you ever get to DC, the invitation is always open. :-) -- Joel Burton <jburton(a)scw.org> Director of Information Systems, Support Center of Washington

using Perl "inside" Zope
by Carl David 03 Aug '01

03 Aug '01

After lots of hacking, I think I've got an old CGI.pm module and perl program, renamed to a py extension and stored in /Extensions with a correct first line pointing at the perl interpreter, and still it says there is an error on the line "use CGI". The program itself executes from the command line, outputs HTML code, etc., to the screen, but inside Zope, its a big Nope. Can someone explain to me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks Carl David david(a)uconnvm.uconn.edu

Zope v OpenACS and nonprofit application developers
by Anders Schneiderman 03 Aug '01

03 Aug '01

Just to add to Michael's post: People who use openACS have raised two major concerns about using Zope. First, although Zope is easier when starting off, openACS comes a much more developed, integrated system of modules out of the box, and so althought it is more complex, the complexity pays off. Given that our goal is to build open source apps that work well for larger as well as smaller organizations, this is an important consideration. The much more serious issue is whether openACS scales much better than Zope does. People who use openACS say that its model can handle much larger apps, due in large part to the fact that openACS is built on a very solid, thoroughly tested data model that uses a relational database approach. Given that at least one of the participants, techrocks, needs a platform that can handle tons of people, this is a pretty big issue. So, as someone participating in the discussion over platforms, I'd be very interested to hear from people who have used Zope to build large scale applications. In particular: 1) How large of an application have you been able to build with Zope without seeing serious performance problems? I.e., how many users, hits per day/hour, etc.? 2) When you build a large-scale application in Zope, do you have to use a RDMS on the back end? Is there a point at which Zope's object system isn't enough anymore? The reason this is important to us is that there are lots of advantages of using an object system, but if you need to rewrite the backend into a relational database as the app gets larger, then openACS, where the database is there at the beginning, starts to look like a better deal. Any thoughts/comments would be extremely helpful. Thanks, Anders Schneiderman Information Manager SEIU International

Problem moving Data.fs to new server
by Ian Sealy 03 Aug '01

03 Aug '01

Dear all, I'm having a problem moving a Data.fs file to a new server. The two Zope versions are identical (2.2.5) and the same products are installed on both. The old server is running Red Hat 6.2 and the new server is running Solaris 8, but that, of course, should be irrelevant. Accessing any object gives the same error: Error Type: AttributeError Error Value: __call__ Traceback (innermost last): File /local102/projects/law/zope-2.2/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 222, in publish_module File /local102/projects/law/zope-2.2/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 187, in publish File /local102/projects/law/zope-2.2/lib/python/Zope/__init__.py, line 221, in zpublisher_exception_hook (Object: ApplicationDefaultPermissions) File /local102/projects/law/zope-2.2/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 162, in publish File /local102/projects/law/zope-2.2/lib/python/ZPublisher/BaseRequest.py, line 308, in traverse File /local102/projects/law/zope-2.2/lib/python/ZPublisher/BeforeTraverse.py, line 85, in __call__ File /local102/projects/law/zope-2.2/lib/python/ZPublisher/BeforeTraverse.py, line 112, in __call__ AttributeError: (see above) I get the same error whatever I try and access (e.g. I can't get into the management screens). Has anyone had a similar problem? Cheers, Ian
