Zope + SVG = killer map server ?
by Didier Georgieff 08 Jul '01

08 Jul '01

Hello, We are thinking about replacing our Arcview Internet Map Server (serve map datas images to web clients, ans more) with a Zope + SVG architecture. We already can see the huge benefits for such a framework : - benefits of SVG on the client (make the application more interactive and quite speedy after the data download) - benefits for a geographical base class (*any* document being able to self represent or localize on a map, ...) - benefits of interoperability with gis data - benefits of zope for managing all the complexity, - so and so Before going further (architecture and implementation), is there any one who already had same thought, or is there any similar project where we can drop in ? I already have some working pieces and some conceptual pieces, and all that needs to be properly discussed. Honnestly, this could be the next CMFlike killer app because maps are soooooooo sexy ;-))) Regards. Didier.

ZDOM ... un-domlike?
by Matt 08 Jul '01

08 Jul '01

Hi, I have a simple question. I have been plying around with the ZDOM interface to Zope objects, and there seems to be something I don't quite understand. I have figured out that the attributes of any particular zope object are its properties. However when I print out attribute values using getNodeValue() on items in a list returned by getAttributes(), I get values of different types!! That is very un-domlike. The result should be a DOMString. I understand that this would make it less nice for people wanting to access their content and properties without fuss, but there are other object methods that already let you do this. I was wondering the reasoning behind this, and perhaps, if I am looking at the ZDOM in the wrong light. thanks Matt

how to initialize base class attributes
by Aaron Payne 07 Jul '01

07 Jul '01

Hi all, I have a question. I've written my first python product for zope. It works until I try to access attributes of a base class. Background: Worker is a class with User as a base class. In Firm.py ... import Being ... class Worker ( Being.User, Acquisition.Implicit, Persistent, AccessControl.Role.RoleManager, OFS.SimpleItem.Item, ): ... The problem occurs when I initialize a worker instance. The statement Being.User.__init__(self, firstname, lastname, email) in the __init__ method of the worker class raises a TypeError. I'm a bit confused since this statement works in plain python. From Firm.py def __init__(self, id, title, rate, firstname, lastname, email): Being.User.__init__(self, firstname, lastname, email) self.id = id self.title = title self.rate = rate self.hours = 0.0 The question is how do i initialize attributes of a base class in zope? HTMLDocument kludge for Zope 2.4.0b3
by Kyler B. Laird 07 Jul '01

07 Jul '01

I was able to eliminate a fatal error when loading HTMLDocument 0.2 in Zope 2.4.0b3 by commenting # __implements__ = IHTMLDocument # XXX ??? in HTMLDocument.py The alternative is to have Util.py check "interfaces" before trying to iterate over it. I don't know enough about it to judge where the fix should go. --kyler ------ 2001-07-07T19:26:34 PROBLEM(100) Init Ambiguous name for method of Products.HTMLDocument.HTMLDocument.HTMLDocument: "manage_editForm" != "manage" ------ 2001-07-07T19:26:34 PROBLEM(100) Init Ambiguous name for method of Products.HTMLDocument.HTMLDocument.HTMLDocument: "manage_editForm" != "manage_main" ------ 2001-07-07T19:26:34 PROBLEM(100) Init Ambiguous name for method of Products.HTMLDocument.HTMLDocument.HTMLDocument: "manage_editForm" != "manage_main" ------ 2001-07-07T19:26:34 PROBLEM(100) Init Ambiguous name for method of Products.HTMLDocument.HTMLDocument.HTMLDocument: "manage_editForm" != "manage" initializing PurdueUserFolder ------ 2001-07-07T19:26:41 ERROR(200) Zope Couldn't install HTMLDocument Traceback (innermost last): File /home/www/Zope.6/src/Zope-2.4.0b3-src/lib/python/OFS/Application.py, line 657, in install_product (Object: ApplicationDefaultPermissions) (Info: HTMLDocument) File /var/www/Zope.6/Zope/lib/python/Products/HTMLDocument/__init__.py, line 20, in initialize File /home/www/Zope.6/src/Zope-2.4.0b3-src/lib/python/App/ProductContext.py, line 233, in registerClass File /home/www/Zope.6/src/Zope-2.4.0b3-src/lib/python/Interface/Util.py, line 66, in instancesOfObjectImplements (Object: HTMLDocument) File /home/www/Zope.6/src/Zope-2.4.0b3-src/lib/python/Interface/Util.py, line 72, in _wi (Object: IHTMLDocument) TypeError: loop over non-sequence

External cgi - filesystem
by Philippe Jadin 07 Jul '01

07 Jul '01

Hello, I'm becoming crazy ;-) so I hope my question will be somewhat clear. I'd like to create an external method that get's a zope image object, write it to the filesystem (1), execute an external executable on it (2), and put a resulting file back into zope (3). All this to convert a jpg file to a swf flash file using swift-generator ( www.swift-tools.com fyi) Maybe there are others way to use external cgi with zope and convert to flash, but I have no idea (suggestions welcome!) so my method is like this : --------- def filewrite(self, original_id): #simply testing how to write a file out of zope onto filesystem. import os, string from tempfile import mktemp from cStringIO import StringIO # stolen from the thumbnail example of the zopebook : source_image=getattr(self, original_id) source_file=StringIO(source_image.data) REQUEST=self.REQUEST #create temporary filenames .in file1=mktemp()+ ".in" file2=mktemp()+ ".out" f=open(file1,"w") f.write(source_file.getvalue()) f.close() # that was part (1) # part (2) # os.system("myexternal_soft.exe "+file1+" > "+file2) # f=open(file2,"rt") # lines=f.readlines() # f.close(); # os.unlink(file1) # os.unlink(file2) ------------- Questions : - the first part almost work : I can write an image file to disk if I supply a correct original_id parameter. _BUT_, the file written on disk is corrupted (it's 131 bytes bigger...) - of course I didn't try yet to execute my exe on this file because it is somewhat corrupted, but it *should* work - part (3) is probably not too hard, reading the file outputed by the executable, and doing some sort of manage add product... but if you ave any clue;-) What am I doing wrong? Why do I get strange filesizes? Am I stupid? Those are my today's questions. Thanks a lot ! Philippe Jadin www.123piano.com

[Ann] Mirrowing Folder: mirrows a subfolder recursively onto another subfolder during traversal
by Dieter Maurer 07 Jul '01

07 Jul '01

Sometimes you have a Web application in several variants. A prominent example is the same application for different languages. In such a case, you will want to separate the common parts out and maintain them just once. Nevertheless, the variant parts should be able to reference the common parts as if they had not been factored out. This situation is the main use case for Mirrowing Folder. A mirrowing folder is a folder that is able to map one subfolder into each of its other subfolders. Under the assumption that all subfolders have essentially the same structure, the subfolders of the mirrowed folder are recursively mapped during traversal onto the corresponding subfolders in the folder selected by the request URL. Content there can access the mirrowed objects (almost) as if they were physically located beside them. Mirrowing Folder is similar to Transparent Folder but what becomes visible depends on the request URL. Therefore, name clashes are less of a problem. What is the best place for an /Images directory ?
by Jeff Hotz 07 Jul '01

Would someone please take a minute to explain their recommendation and reasoning behind where best to locate (/usr/local/images, /usr/local/zope/images, /usr/local/zope/var/images) static images? I'm using LocalFile and CoreSession products also. I'm new administering Linux (RedHat 7.1) so any help/theory you can offer will be greatly appreciated. I've created a photo album and display the images using the following code PS - comments on my code are also welcome <dtml-let tmpSesData="ZSessionDataMgr.getSessionData()" yearVar="tmpSesData.get('sSesYear')" sHexMonth="_.string.upper(_.hex(tmpSesData.get('iSesMonth')+1)[2])"> <dtml-in "ZLFSImagePath[yearVar].fileIds()">  <dtml-let iSeqIndex=sequence-index sFileName=sequence-item>   <dtml-if "sFileName[1] == sHexMonth">  <dtml-if "_.divmod(iSeqIndex,thumb_columns)[1] == 0"> <TR> </dtml-if> <TD align="center"> <a href="ZLFSImagePath<dtml-var dir_sep_char><dtml-var yearVar><dtml-var dir_sep_char><dtml-var sFileName>" target="_blank"> <img src="ZLFSImagePath<dtml-var dir_sep_char><dtml-var yearVar><dtml-var thumb_path><dtml-var dir_sep_char><dtml-var thumb_precursor><dtml-var sFileName>.<dtml-var thumb_extension>" alt="<dtml-var sFileName>"> </a> </TD>  <dtml-if "_.divmod(iSeqIndex+1,thumb_columns)[1] == 0"> </TR> </dtml-if> </dtml-if> </dtml-let> </dtml-in> </dtml-let> jeff(a)hotz.net www.hotz.net

Re: WHY ? -- Performace in serving large media files from ZODB vs from external file system
by Dieter Maurer 07 Jul '01

Sedat Yilmazer writes: > In the performance for large image files discussion Dieter Wrote > > > Both will be quite slow when servered by ZServer. > > What could be the reason for being "slow". Since the files are large, > the setup time can be ignored ( time to locate the object) Once the > object is found only thing that remains is the reading the file from DB > ( should be a plain read) and push it to the connection. I do not see a > reason for beeing slow on the db read once the data is located inside > the DB. I have to admit that I did not make any measurements. My remark was based on folkore that Zope is about an order of magnitude slower for static pages than Apache. It may be that the factor is lower for large files. However, when I chased errors in "HTTPResponse.HTTPResponse.write" (back in version 2.1.6), I recognized that such a write does not go straight to the HTTP connection but goes through an intermediate file. Thus, your large file is copied once at the server side before it is streamed out to the browser. And there is some Python code around that controls this buffering. Thus, I expect that ZServer is at least twice as slow as direct serving the file. Dieter

User Authentication
by Douglas Daniel Del Frari 07 Jul '01

Personal Saudacoes! In the application that I am developing, my users will not use the screen of management of zope. Thus, that one would like to make authentication of the users in the similar system that the Zope.Org uses. http://www.zope.org/login.html?came_from=http://www.zope.org/login.html I use " acl_users " of the ZODB. This, possesss some attributes as: " name ", " password ", " confirm ", " roules " and "domains ". I obtained to add to users with methods manipulating these attributes. It would like now, to legalize an user ' xyz ' in zope without using " /manage " for example, and also, without calling the screen authentication standard that is invoked when we have access objects that require " Access contents information ". Somebody worked with authentication of users in the Zope of this form? Somebody could help? It forgives, my English is bad. --------------------------------------- DOUGLAS DANIEL DEL FRARI Graduando em Informtica - (UNIJU/RS) mailto:gaucho@detec.unijui.tche.br http://www.tchezope.cjb.net ---------------------------------------
