passing method names into a python script?
by Kevin L 06 Jul '01

06 Jul '01

I want to pass the name of a Z SQL Method into a python script, then execute that method and iterate over the results. Is this possible? My app uses a lot of dropdowns populated from database tables. Rather than rewriting the code for each one, I'd like to create one python script that takes a z sql method as a parameter, then executes it and spits out the html for the dropdown. Every Z SQL Method would return the same column names (id & value). Has this been done before? thanks -Kevin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? SybaseDA2.0v2 installation problem
by Jason Joy 06 Jul '01

06 Jul '01

Hello, I have a feeling I am doing something really silly or I'm simply missing something here. I retrieved and installed the rpm for sybase 11.9.2 (common) and then untarballed the sybaseDA package ... and then followed the instructions as far as how to make it, and got this at the "make" stage? Is there a package that I am supposed to have to make this work in Zope that I just forgot to install, or... something even simpler? This is what happens... > make gcc -fPIC -I/include -g -O2 -I/usr/include/python1.5 -I/usr/include/python1.5 - DHAVE_CONFIG_H -c ./sy_occ.c In file included from ./sy_occ.c:47: ctpublic.h:23: cspublic.h: No such file or directory make: *** [sy_occ.o] Error 1 Any thoughts or ideas on this would be appreciated. RE: [Zope] is DTML a www standard?

There are very good reasons for modularizing SQL methods, even if they do increase your object count, IMHO... If you have ever build a big application in anything like ASP or other templating setup that mixes presentation and logic, you really start to want modularization very quickly, especially if the application has: 1. Muliple developers 2. Is constantly changing I think the real solution to this problem (object clutter) is an updated version of Transparent folders minus the namespace bug, and perhaps minus the bug (I'm not sure if this one is reported), that makes transparent folders break Ram Cache Managers... As soon as a more stable version of Transparent Folders is released, it serves as a good place to put SQL methods and logic, leaving the presentation templates in the main folder for simplicity's sake... I see alot of large-scale issues, it's the little things that mean alot though. > To me one complex DTML > method is much worse than 3 or 4 simple DTML/SQL methods, > documents/scripts. I agree, but my point was simple-query to report. This would allow one to create a single method that incorporates both the output form and the SQL into a single object. In my environment, this would respresent about 90% of the SQL reports and would reduce my object count by about 40%. > However, I think you are making Python seem a lot harder > than it is. It is one of the easiest languages to learn and work with. The point here is the programmer mentality. Alot of people that work with the Web are not programmers and frankly, scripting pushes their limits. Dependence on Python limits the market. > I believe this is happening. Zope just needs to reach a critical mass of > users to get truely "embraced". Once that happens, I think all hell will > break loose. > In my case, unless I was friends with a guy who is very into Linux, I would not have heard of Zope. Still wouldn't have heard of Zope and likely wouldn't ever have heard of Zope. The Open Source, Linux and Python communities are very insular. Probably a result of the anti-windows rhetoric tossed around so much. (which we see sometimes within this list as well). Or as well, a bias from the windows community. The VB, Delphi and VC++ guys are the same and if they think they have to learn Pyhton to use Zope, they wont. (yes, yes, in general, I feel this is accurate, there are always exceptions... but they aren't the loudest cannon in the fort.) _______________________________________________ Zope maillist - Zope(a)zope.org http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope ** No cross posts or HTML encoding! ** (Related lists - http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce http://lists.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev )

ZCatalog Searching on Path
by Brian Brinegar 06 Jul '01

06 Jul '01

I would like to be able to search a ZCatalog based on the path to the cataloged object. Basically I would like to say "Show me all of the cataloged objects that fall within this folder" and have it return a list. Since the ZCatalog uses the physical path to identify objects I know the data is stored, but has anyone found a way to search on that data? --Brian

Zope 2.3 nominated for Webtechniques Web Tools readers choice award
by Michael R. Bernstein 06 Jul '01

If you go to http://www.webtechniques.com/wtawards/2001/getballot.shtml you can request a ballot, and receive a URL via email that you can got to for voting. Zope 2.3 is featured in the 'infrastructure' category, rather than 'strategy' or 'development', but I suppose each person will see that choice differently. I think that in addition to voting for Zope in it's category, people should add a write in candidate for Python 2.1 in the development category. Go team! Michael Bernstein.

Suggestion: why not also write in "Zope 2.3 / Python" in the development category. Strange problem with ZMySQLDA
by Kevin L 06 Jul '01

06 Jul '01

Hello, I get the following error when calling a Z SQL Method within a <dtml-in> tag: Warning: Some non-transactional changed tables couldn't be rolled back For example: <dtml-in "_.range(0,5)"> <dtml-call "insert_rec(num=sequence-number)"> </dtml-in> The method just inserts one row into a table. Calling it on it's own works fine, as does executing it via the "Test" function. But calling it from inside <dtml-in> always gives the error. According to the mysql log file it runs the query (althoug the record does not get inserted) and then does a ROLLBACK (why???). Has anyone encountered this before? thanks much -Kevin __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! How to force root context thru URL acquisition?
by Joel Burton 06 Jul '01

06 Jul '01

I have a simple DTML Method, Dig, which produces a sitemap by recursively digging into objectValues. I keep this at the root level of our site so that I can give it a URL like http://foo.com/about/stencils/Dig and get a sitemap of everything in & below /about/stencils However, my root dir is getting very full, so I was moving some administrative tools to subfolders where they are used. I want to move Dig to the admin folder. If I do this, I can still get a sitemap of stencils, now with http://foo.com/admin/about/stencils/Dig (assuming that admin doesn't have an about section, of course) However, how do I get a sitemap of the whole site? How can I put into the URL that I want to go back to the top? a) I know I can crete a DTMLDocument that does something like <dtml-with "PARENTS[-1]"><dtml-var Dig></dtml-with>. I want to do this in the URL, not have to create a special method for root digging. b) I tried creating an object in the admin folder to represent the root level. This was called "root", and contained <dtml-return "PARENTS[-1]"> but if I try http://foo.com/admin/root/Dig I don' get anything. Any ideas? Thanks! -- Joel Burton <jburton(a)scw.org> Director of Information Systems, Support Center of Washington

Access Object 'by name' from python
by Horst Wald 06 Jul '01

06 Jul '01

Hi, is there a way to access Objects 'by name'? I mean to pass the name or the path of an object to a python script and then call it? Like the _[...] trick? By the way: via objectItems(), I can get a list like ['DB', 'DBAdapter', 'DBInterface', 'index_html', 'rename', 'kadabra', 'abra', 'LogBuch', 'LogNeu', 'delete', 'exists', 'ko', 'asas', 'copy_of_ko', 'listRec', 'listAll'] of all the objects in a given folder. Is there a way to do that recursively? One last question: is there a way to see the type of a given object from python? Or to see if it has certain attributes? Thank you Gurus Horst _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.
