too much different object types?
by Neunreither, Isabelle 31 May '01

Hi, I have a problem to understand why there are so much different object types in Zope and why you can't access more general categories of objects. I found that it is not logic. If Zope is based on objects, he has to group some objects in more general classes together, so you can access Folder, Documents, Scripts and Images. Folder and Image classes exist, but a class Document which is an super class for the types Files, XML Document, DTML Document, etc. does not exist, as well as a class Script which could be an super class for Python scripts, DTML Methode, etc. i understand that zope needs a precise type for each object, but why can i not access a more general categorie of objects? cheers, Isabelle Neunreither konsylo Messeler-Park-Strasse 74 64291 DARMSTADT Fon: 0 6150 866 196 Fax: 0 6150 866 197 email: in(a)konsylo.com

RE: [Zope] Virtual Hosting on ZServer Updated
by abg＠comco-inc.com 31 May '01

I'm pretty new to python, and am having a bit of difficulty with the AccessRule code Alan sugggested. I need to be able to map not only domains (bar.com) but virtual domains (foo.bar.com) to locations in Zope. This AccessRule works quite well for the former, but appears to ignore the prefix of the latter (foo). Here's what I've tried so far: I changed this bit of code: hostname="_.string.split(_.string.lower(_.string.split(HTTP_HOST, ':')[0]),'.')[-2:]" domainname="hostname[0] + '.' + hostname[1]" vhmcode="VHosts.gethostfolder(_.None, _, host=domainname)" To this: hostname="_.string.split(_.string.lower(_.string.split(HTTP_HOST, ':')[0]),'.')[-3:]" domainname="hostname[1] + '.' + hostname[2]" domainname2="hostname[0] + '.' + hostname[1] + '.' + hostname[2]" vhmcode="VHosts.gethostfolder(_.None, _, host=domainname)" How do I tell AccessRule to use one method (gethostfolder) for those requests that are in bar.com format, and another method for those requests that are in foo.bar.com format? Also, I'm really not sure if the changes I've made above are going to screw anything up. Any help will be greatly appreciated, and (hopefully) returned at a later time. Thanks. Netscape Problems

We found some instances where Netscape loads pages very, very slowly and on Windoz can freeze the entire machine for several seconds or even minutes. I have seen this happen with the EventFolder product and most recently with a heavily modified Squishdot that we are using. We thought it was due to Style Sheets, however upon further investigation by our designer, it appears that the use of lots of tables--in particular nested tables--seemed to be the culprit. As we reduced the number of tables in the layout, Netscape loaded the site nearly as well as IE. BTW, Netscape 4.7x behaves this way on the three platforms we tested (Mac, Linux, Windows) Our Zope is version 2.3.2 and we are using FastCGI with Apache 1.3.17 to provide the service. We are frustrated too. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ronald L. RE: [Zope] How to give caller acquisition path to an object throu gh python script ?

> The problem is that "someobject" renders using the > acquisition path of the FOLDER that contains "main" > I want the "someobject" to use the acquisition path of the "main" DTML > object rather than the one of it's folder. Hi Gilles, Unfortunately, I can't offer any advice--I'm having the same problem. Tell me if I'm generalizing the problem correctly with this question: How do you reference an object -other- than the one that currently has "context"? In my case, I'm trying to build a navigation tree that -always- starts with the root folder, even when I'm two or three levels deep... I tried expressing the root folder as the oldest object in the PARENTS list, but my script doesn't appear to perceive it as an object... Cheers, Harrison

Client Side Form Field Validation - How to ?
by Luca Manini 31 May '01

31 May '01

Hi, the subject says it (almost) all. Taken for granted that one should validate input "also" on the server, everybody (even me) knows many reasons (no post, faster and more user-friendly messsages, ...) for doing something on the client. The first thing that comes to (my) mind is Java (o JavaScript ?). Or would be possible to write some Python (Jython) ? Anyhting already available ? Anything "declarative" (like usign regexp) ? TIA, Luca

Possible: Saving and re-issuing the REQUEST?
by Philipp Robbel 31 May '01

31 May '01

Hi all, I have a question regarding Zope's REQUEST. I'm creating a main site that includes a drop-down menu generated by SQL data. On the same page - right above the drop-down menu - there's supposed to be a "Create new drop-down entry"-link which opens a small window via javascript. In this window the user can enter a new entry and insert it into the SQL Database. Additionally I would like a "REFRESH" button in this javascript window which would refresh the main site with the sql-generated drop-down menu to show the changes made in the sql-drop-down. This refreshing should be done with the original request which was used to call the main site at the beginning. Is this possible? Via javascript I can access the "main-site" via "top.". But I don't know how to the following: MAIN SITE is called with a REQUEST -> When "Create new drop-down entry" is clicked, SAVE REQUEST of MAIN SITE, PASS it to the javascript window -> If REFRESH-button is pushed in javascript window, PASS REQUEST back to MAIN SITE and REFRESH the main site along with the original request. I would be glad if a Zope guru could help me :-) Thanks in advance, Philipp

How to caller acquisition path to an object through python script ?
by Gilles Lenfant 31 May '01

31 May '01

Hi, I's not possible to expose my problem with a simple phrase. So I'll write down an example: I got a "main" DTML method that contains: -- DTML method "main" -- ... <dtml-var "getobject(somearg)"> ... --------------------------- "getobject" is a python script that finds a Zope object (DTML method or document) depending on "somearg". -- Python script "getobject" -- # find object depending on "somearg" ... return anobject(context) ----------------------------- OKAY, it runs but I want the object uses the acquisition path of the Folder that contains the "main" script. I need that the returned object uses the acquisition path of the "main" DMLT object. When used like this, if the returned object uses a reference to something that's in the "main" object's namespace, I got an error. Any clue ? TIA --Gilles

I think that if you put ObjectManager > before Item, it > should work fine. However, I'm not sure if this the reason behind the > problem Max was having. As it turns out the ordering of these classes seems to be the exact reason for my problems. I removed the simpleitem.item and the stuff mostly worked, but I could not see my image in the view tab of my image tab, as it returned a wrong path to the Image. I then inserted the SimpleItem.Item as below, and everything is dandy. My class declaration now looks like this:: class ots_laering(ObjectManager, SimpleItem.Item, ots_laeringLogic): and things behaves exactly as expected. It's a lovely day regards Max M
