ZEO homogenously distributed

Hi. Having seen the implementation of a high speed database, based on a homogenous cluster of machines, I wonder if there are plans to make a ZEN (Zope Enterprise Network). I am imagening ZEN with the following properties: -Must consist of at least 2 machines. -Data is always stored in at least two different machines --This makes no need for a disk write, only a saved to memory on two machines acknowledgement. -All machines share the object index. -All machines can handle requests and forward or load balance the request to an appropriate machine. -Extending the cluster is just about adding another machine. -When a machine goes down data redistributes so that the cluster is reduntant to yet another machine failure. These are just some thoughts, but I would like to know if this is an idea that someone might deem doable. Sincerely Jørgen

I did not install other things than the source tarball from zope.org. There are two things. 1. I can not log-in as the manager account. (Sometimes yes, but sometimes no.) 2. The management interface screen does not reflect the changes I make immediately. Maybe some time has passed, and I make a connection to the zope, then it shows the changes. DTML/Python to upload documents

First, let me say that I'm making a site for lawyers to use to upload documents. Now you know why it needs to be as simple to use as possible. The easiest thing to do would be to use the Zope interface. It doesn't always work out that way... I have created a form (DTML method), an addFormAction (DTML Method), and a Python script to make a pretty screen for gathering information and uploading the file. I would like to do something fancy with the ID (like remove blanks from the filename, change : and / to _, etc, and be certain that it is a unique id. But that is for another day... The problem with the following code is that it does not put a file in my folder. All it does is copy the location of the file (e.g., G:\some\path\to\file\filename.pdf). No document. If I get this right, I'm going to post in on ZopeLabs. (ZopeLabs is a really great idea, incidentally.) Hi I stumbled about a problem in LocalFS today, and when searching the mail archives, I found that the question was raised already in March, but not answered. So I send the answer also to the list. Here is the archived email: http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope/2001-March/085619.html The *Overwrite local file* permission is not working from the ZMI, so that only users with the *Manager* role can overwrite a file via uploading. I run Zope 2.3.2 with LocalFS-0.10.1 (which is the actual version on zope.org) The problem is a typo in module LocalFS, class LocalDirectory, method manage_overwrite (line 678 in LocalFS.py). Instead of: if user is None or not user.has_permission('Overwrite files', self): it must read: if user is None or not user.has_permission('Overwrite local files', self): ------------------------------------------------------^^^^^^--------------- I apologize, if the typo is already known and I come with something old. As a former VCL and OWL programmer, I have a bit of an affinity towards that way of doing things; the catch is of course, given I mainly do server-side development now (and frankly, it makes no sense to do non-client development in non-open tools, for the most part), I don't have the interest, or the money to keep paying Borland for upgrades every time the release a new version of Kylix/Delphi/Whatever; I stopped playing that game at about BCPP 3 after going from TP1.5->Delphi2->BCPP 3. I could only afford the decent versions of those tools when I was a student and had access to academic pricing at the campus bookstore, and now that I don't I do work in free tools, and get more satisfaction out of it. Kylix still has too high of a barrier to entry for most developers to even be considered for any open-source development. wxPython has definitely rekindled my interest in doing some desktop development, with the idea that Zope would provide a good middleware suite / backend for those kind of apps. I can't wait to see what the Boa-Constructor people have been doing... Newbie question: dtml or python comand requested

hi all, i hope this isn't too trivial. :) i recently constructed a navigation bar with zope. now i would like to include a functionality to switch languages. when clicking on a "spanish" button, the folder ids that are displayed shall be replaced by the values of a spanish attribute - the corresponding spanish description for the link. depending on whether spanish content exists for this link either a spanish or english default document shall be displayed in the right part of the window. for carrying out this if-query i need to look dynamically - always when the button is clicked - into the folder level, one level below the context and search the "spanish_default". so, please, what is the command (dtml or python) for "starting a search" for a document that is situated in a folder (which is not known by name, because it changes) one level below the current context folder. (like <dtml-if ../spanish_default> do... ). thanx, fernando

Actually, I was referring to non-routed VLANs, on the same switch(es), setup so that each ZEO Client has another NIC just to access that VLAN, which has no other traffic. I am currently setting up something like this, but I have the luxury of a dedicated NIC for this purpose (well, almost, I have udp heartbeats on this as well). I am trying to keep the ZEO server as isolated as possible from other networks. Forgive me if this is a dumb questions, but is there a way to bind the ZSS process to serve certain particular interfaces only? Vlans do not add considerable security. Since often the setup includes a firewall, one cant use them anyway in these cases. I think to solve the problem for arbitrary clients accessing ZODB we need an additionally layer on top of the application logic which can then be accessed via net using authorisation and such. We need this layer anyway for better application abstraction. But I fear this goes out of the scope of this thread. Zope folder property manipulation problem

Hi guys I am struggling with a small part. I passed the following parameter to this python script - fname, newvar, newval, newtype I am trying to change the current variable say memberid which is passed within newvar with a newvalue say 100 which is passed in newval. But its not getting changed. The line indicated below has no effect ------------------------------------ if container.hasProp(fname, newvar): container[fname].manage_changeProperties(newvar = newval) (this line is suppossed to make the change - but no effect) print fname + '-0' else: try: container[fname].manage_addProperty(newvar, newval, newtype) print 1 except: print 0 return printed ----------------------------------- how do i make python understand that i want the value with the newvar to be used and to be set with the value within newval ??? please advice me. thanks bobby
