Data.fs packing persistently shuts down
by Fritz Mesedilla 26 May '01

help! when i'm running zope and zeo, data.fs packing doesn't work. i can see in the process list that it does nothing. it is only when i change the custom_db.py to disable zeo and restart zope that packing works again. is there a way that i can pack the data.fs while zeo and zope is running? and how do i configure zope to run and use "/usr/local/zope/var/data.fs" as its database and not "ZEO Storage" which is in the same server? essentially they use the same database, however, zope in that same server becomes a client that i think zeo doesn't allow it to pack the database. please help! thanks. Boa as ZFC

Hi Stefan and Chris, > Hi Stefan :-) > > "Stefan H. Actually most of the support will be via XML-RPC, but not all. Some calls will use DC's Client.py (over HTTP so it should not be a problem) as some of the Zope API calls require keyword arguments which XML-RPC does not support. The important thing is that FTP is dropped completely. > > Cool, maybe the authors could come and contribute to the ZFC disucssion list? Hmmm, Boa provides the IDE framework in which the Zope support plugs in. Is this framework idea of yours discussed on the ZFC list? > > Can any of the ZOA developers comment? Please check out Boa to get an idea of what is already done. Janos, Did you test that? It would be funny if it was like ColdFusion and used 'AND'. Tommy Tommy, You might try this: <dtml-if "this and that"> Best, jd Janos Dohanics

ZEO homogenously distributed
by Jørgen Hermanrud Fjeld 26 May '01

26 May '01

Hi. Having seen the implementation of a high speed database, based on a homogenous cluster of machines, I wonder if there are plans to make a ZEN (Zope Enterprise Network). I am imagening ZEN with the following properties: -Must consist of at least 2 machines. -Data is always stored in at least two different machines --This makes no need for a disk write, only a saved to memory on two machines acknowledgement. -All machines share the object index. -All machines can handle requests and forward or load balance the request to an appropriate machine. -Extending the cluster is just about adding another machine. -When a machine goes down data redistributes so that the cluster is reduntant to yet another machine failure. These are just some thoughts, but I would like to know if this is an idea that someone might deem doable. Sincerely Jørgen

Re: [Zope] [Q] thread option in Python

01-05-25 ¿ÀÈÄ 8:54:13 Thanks, Tino. The environment is Devian 2.2 (Potato) Kernel 2.19 AMD486 ZOPE 2.3.2 Python 1.52 That is all of mine. I did not install other things than the source tarball from zope.org. There are two things. 1. I can not log-in as the manager account. (Sometimes yes, but sometimes no.) 2. The management interface screen does not reflect the changes I make immediately. Maybe some time has passed, and I make a connection to the zope, then it shows the changes. DTML/Python to upload documents
by complaw＠hal-pc.org 25 May '01

25 May '01

First, let me say that I'm making a site for lawyers to use to upload documents. Now you know why it needs to be as simple to use as possible. The easiest thing to do would be to use the Zope interface. It doesn't always work out that way... I have created a form (DTML method), an addFormAction (DTML Method), and a Python script to make a pretty screen for gathering information and uploading the file. I would like to do something fancy with the ID (like remove blanks from the filename, change : and / to _, etc, and be certain that it is a unique id. But that is for another day... The problem with the following code is that it does not put a file in my folder. All it does is copy the location of the file (e.g., G:\some\path\to\file\filename.pdf). No document. If I get this right, I'm going to post in on ZopeLabs. (ZopeLabs is a really great idea, incidentally.) Here is the code for the form... <dtml-var standard_html_header> <H3 ALIGN="center">Add a Document Associated with the <dtml-var case_style></H3> <P ALIGN="center">Enter the information below to upload the document.</P> <FORM ACTION="addFileAction" METHOD="POST"> <table border="0" cellspacing="8" width="95%" align="center"> <tr> <th width="25%" align="right">Date of the document:</td> <td width="75%" align="left"><input type="text" size="40" name="document_date:date" value="<dtml-var ZopeTime fmt="%B %d, %Y">"></td> </tr> <tr> <th width="25%" align="right"><em>Brief</em> description of the document:</td> <td width="75%" align="left"><input type="text" size="40" name="description" value=""></td> </tr> <tr> <th width="25%" align="right">Keywords to help people find this document:</td> <td width="75%" align="left"><input type="text" size="40" name="keywords" value=""></td> </tr> <tr> <th width="25%" align="right">Unique Filename for the document (No blanks): </td> <td width="75%" align="left"><input type="text" size="40" name="fileid"></td> </tr> <tr> <th width="25%" align="right">The document to upload:</td> <td width="75%" align="left"><input type="file" size="40" name="uploaded_file"></td> </tr> <TR> <TD WIDTH="25%" ALIGN="right"></TD> <TD WIDTH="75%" ALIGN="left"><INPUT TYPE="submit" VALUE="Upload Document"> <INPUT TYPE="reset" VALUE="Clear"> </TD> </TR> </TABLE> </form> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> Here is the code for the addFileAction DTML Method.... <dtml-var standard_html_header> <dtml-call expr="addFile(document_date, description, keywords, fileid, uploaded_file)"> <h1 align="center">Thank you for your entry!</h1> <p align="center"><a href="<dtml-var URL1>">Return</a> back to the documents page.</p> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> And, finally, the Python script... # This code adds a file to the folder... # Use the user-supplied fileid as the id... id = fileid # Create the document... context.manage_addProduct['OFSP'].manage_addFile(id, title=description, precondition="", file=uploaded_file) # Add the properties... doc=getattr(context, id) doc.manage_addProperty('document_date', document_date, 'date') doc.manage_addProperty('description', description, 'string') doc.manage_addProperty('keywords', keywords, 'string') I'm sure you all guessed where I picked up this line of thought and code. I'm probably missing some little thing. I've gone over load_site.py, File.py and Image.py and sevearl HOWTO's, but still managed to miss the solution. The upload page of Zope itself has many solutions, but I couldn't find the particular file in the source for the upload file page. I think that somehow the contents of the file are not getting through the form, but haven't been able to confirm that. Any help would be appreciated. Cheers, Ron

RE: LocalFS manage_overwrite Permissions Question
by Flynt 25 May '01

25 May '01

Hi I stumbled about a problem in LocalFS today, and when searching the mail archives, I found that the question was raised already in March, but not answered. So I send the answer also to the list. Here is the archived email: http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope/2001-March/085619.html The *Overwrite local file* permission is not working from the ZMI, so that only users with the *Manager* role can overwrite a file via uploading. I run Zope 2.3.2 with LocalFS-0.10.1 (which is the actual version on zope.org) The problem is a typo in module LocalFS, class LocalDirectory, method manage_overwrite (line 678 in LocalFS.py). Instead of: if user is None or not user.has_permission('Overwrite files', self): it must read: if user is None or not user.has_permission('Overwrite local files', self): ------------------------------------------------------^^^^^^--------------- I apologize, if the typo is already known and I come with something old. Greetings --- Flynt

RE: [Zope] Prerequisites for a desktop IDE, or any desktop app w/ Zope
by sean.upton＠uniontrib.com 25 May '01

As a former VCL and OWL programmer, I have a bit of an affinity towards that way of doing things; the catch is of course, given I mainly do server-side development now (and frankly, it makes no sense to do non-client development in non-open tools, for the most part), I don't have the interest, or the money to keep paying Borland for upgrades every time the release a new version of Kylix/Delphi/Whatever; I stopped playing that game at about BCPP 3 after going from TP1.5->Delphi2->BCPP 3. I could only afford the decent versions of those tools when I was a student and had access to academic pricing at the campus bookstore, and now that I don't I do work in free tools, and get more satisfaction out of it. Kylix still has too high of a barrier to entry for most developers to even be considered for any open-source development. wxPython has definitely rekindled my interest in doing some desktop development, with the idea that Zope would provide a good middleware suite / backend for those kind of apps. I can't wait to see what the Boa-Constructor people have been doing... If I could get the ability to have a tool like Delphi, et al and be able to code in Python, and use Zope as an object brokering system for a backend - and have it all free - I would be very willing to give up sleeping and eating just to code more ;) Sean -----Original Message----- From: Christian Tismer [mailto:tismer@tismer.com] Sent: Thursday, May 24, 2001 11:35 AM To: Michel Pelletier Cc: sean.upton(a)uniontrib.com; zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] Prerequisites for a desktop IDE, or any desktop app w/Zope Michel Pelletier wrote: ... > > I'm currently doing a bit of playing around with wxPython, which > reminds me > > a lot of my days programming with the Borland OWL class libraries, so I > > might be partial to such a solution using wxPython instead of tkinter (tcl > > interpreter - blech! motif-style widgets - yuck!). Do you think Delphi/Kylix is considerable? At the moment, I'm considering this for a GUI for FreePM. I had some very good experience with PythonForDelphi, it integrates very well with Python. You have both worlds: Python's scripting power, and Delphi with its IDE. Doing the same thing under Linux using Kylix might be a promising path. ciao - chris -- Christian Tismer :^) <mailto:tismer@tismer.com> Mission Impossible 5oftware : Have a break! Newbie question: dtml or python comand requested
by Fernando Fuente 25 May '01

25 May '01

hi all, i hope this isn't too trivial. :) i recently constructed a navigation bar with zope. now i would like to include a functionality to switch languages. when clicking on a "spanish" button, the folder ids that are displayed shall be replaced by the values of a spanish attribute - the corresponding spanish description for the link. depending on whether spanish content exists for this link either a spanish or english default document shall be displayed in the right part of the window. for carrying out this if-query i need to look dynamically - always when the button is clicked - into the folder level, one level below the context and search the "spanish_default". so, please, what is the command (dtml or python) for "starting a search" for a document that is situated in a folder (which is not known by name, because it changes) one level below the current context folder. (like <dtml-if ../spanish_default> do... ). thanx, fernando

RE: [Zope] Re: ZEO Client space was:
by sean.upton＠uniontrib.com 25 May '01

Actually, I was referring to non-routed VLANs, on the same switch(es), setup so that each ZEO Client has another NIC just to access that VLAN, which has no other traffic. I am currently setting up something like this, but I have the luxury of a dedicated NIC for this purpose (well, almost, I have udp heartbeats on this as well). I am trying to keep the ZEO server as isolated as possible from other networks. Forgive me if this is a dumb questions, but is there a way to bind the ZSS process to serve certain particular interfaces only? Vlans do not add considerable security. Since often the setup includes a firewall, one cant use them anyway in these cases. I think to solve the problem for arbitrary clients accessing ZODB we need an additionally layer on top of the application logic which can then be accessed via net using authorisation and such. We need this layer anyway for better application abstraction. But I fear this goes out of the scope of this thread.
