RE: [Zope] Will the inheritance relationship will be preserved af ter export/import?
by NABETH Thierry 15 May '01

Hello Iap, >> The interitance relationship seems broken after export/import between different ZODB. Following is the message I have posted about this bug in January. I have mentioned already this bug several time, but until now I seemed to be the only one that care about this bug. (which makes me ask question about how much or how little the Zope community is using object orientation and inheritance with the Dtml language). I have personally stopped all design on the Zope platform (which I find some concept very interesting), and am concentrating my effort on Java/servlets because of this bug. I hope you find some way to solve your problems. Bye, Thierry -----Original Message----- From: Thierry Nabeth [mailto:Thierry.Nabeth@insead.fr] Sent: Saturday, January 06, 2001 10:46 PM To: zope(a)zope.org Cc: Thierry Nabeth Subject: Serious BUG in Export. ==> pb of lost inheritance if export / reimport. Hello, I would like to mention a very serious bug (for me), that prevent to use inheritance between two classes defined in two different package, if you have to export and reimport those packages. In a previous mail I mentionned a problem of Inheritance lost between packages. I spent a lot of time investigating the problem, and in particular looking in the export file (xml version). First here is the test: Phase 1: create the products and the classes. Create a product PA Create a class A in the product PA. Create a method "test" in class A. (this method display "before"). Create a product PB Create a class B in the product PB which inherits from A. Create an instance a of A. Create an instance b of B. Phase 2: test the inheritance. ==> everything works fine Executing the method "test" on those two instances return. a.test ==> "before" b.test ==> "before" The result is correct. Phase 3: export / reimport product PB, and modify methode "test". Export the product PB. (PB.zexp is generated) Delete the product PB and restart zope. Import the product PB (PB.zexp) and restart zope. Modify the method "test" in class A.. (this method display "after"). Phase 4: test the inheritance. ==> B does not work correctly. Executing the method "test" on those two instances return. a.test ==> "after" b.test ==> "before" ####### this is incorect. !!!!!! I spent a lot of time investing this problem, in particular looking in the xml export file. The problem is that when you export PB, the exported file also contain the definition of class A. When you re-import PB, B inherits from a class A that is different from the class A that is in the product PA. You have a kind of Zombie class A. (note: reimporting class A doesn't solve the problem). If someone has some idea how to fix this bug which almost forbid the use of inheritance between products in zope (unless you have a master server that never import anything) ?! How do I iterate through the fields in a form, inside the form handler? The REQUEST object has the form fields and way too much other stuff... Converting old site to Zope
by Rahsheen Porter 15 May '01

This may very well be a FAQ, but I can't seem to locate the answer. How do I import my old website run by Apache into Zope? Is there an easy way or do I have to sit here and add each individual file? zzLocale
by Hank Bowry 15 May '01

15 May '01

Hello All. I'm trying to get zzLocale up and running on my zope 2.3.2 a couple of questions. I've untarred where I believe it should be, and put the french locales under Squishdot for example and restarted, and I can see the zzLocale under products, but nothing really happens other than that....shouldn't something be in french if my browser defaults to french?....what exactly should happen?....and maybe it's not obvious 'cause I haven't set it up correctly.... any help? also, I noticed that the start script has an -L switch available for localization...based on the RC_LANG or $LANG variable in the OS....is this necessary for zzlocale? is it independant of zzlocale is it better or worse? different? un-related? what? thanks for the enlightenment. Re: [Zope] External methods and DTML ?
by Tino Wildenhain 15 May '01

15 May '01

Hi, its quiet simple: your External methods might look like so: import string files={'file1':'path/to/file','file2','path/to/file2'} def ReadExternalFile(fileid): # try to open file. If fileid is invalid, an exception occurs file=open(files[fileid]) # you can do some processing as splitting up into lines: return file.readlines() def WriteExternalFile(fileid, lines): # try to open file. If fileid is invalid, an exception occurs file=open(files[fileid],'w') file.writelines(lines) You can then use these methods like this in your dtml-method: <dtml-if myfile> <dtml-call "WriteExternalFile(fileid='file1',lines=myfile)"> </dtml-if form was submitted> <form method="post"> <dtml-with "ReadExternalFile(fileid='file1')"> <textarea name="myfile"> <dtml-var read htmlquote> </textarea> </dtml-with> <input type="submit" name="foo" value="change"> Ok, this is very sketchy but you should get the point. However, the above method does not protect the file from modifying through concourrent requests. If you want to protect yourself against this, I would suggest writing a class in the external method: import string files={'file1':'path/to/file','file2','path/to/file2'} class ProtectFileChange: __allow_access_to_unprotected_subobjects_=1 def __init__(self,fileid): # do something to protect the file, e.g. rename it # or use locking on it (see posix) self.file=open(files[fileid],'rw') def read(self): self.file.seek(0) return(self.file.read()) def write(self, data): self.file.seek(0) self.file.write(data) def __del__(self): # do something to unlock the file self.file.close() # cleenup. def PFile(fileid): return ProtectFileChange(fileid) You can use this class as External method this way: <dtml-with "PFile(fileid='file1')"> <dtml-if myfile> <dtml-call "write(myfile)"> </dtml-if> <form method=post> <textarea name="myfile"> <dtml-var read html_quote> </textarea> <input type="submit" value="change"> </form> </dtml-with> The latter keeps the object with the file until the request ends. This is untested code however, there might be a lot of typos :) HTH Tino Wildenhain --On Montag, 14. Weird (?) Python Script problem
by Bruce Eckel 15 May '01

15 May '01

The following script follows all the rules, I think. It saves fine, and I usually get an exception when I save a script if there's something wrong with it. But when I try to run it, it pops up the "Please type your user name and password" dialog box, and it will not accept my "root" zope admin password. ## Script (Python) "SeminarID" ##bind container=container ##bind context=context ##bind namespace= ##bind script=script ##bind subpath=traverse_subpath ##parameters=name ##title= ## import string, time order_id = string.join(string.split(string.strip(name)), '') # Remove spaces idstring = '' for c in order_id: if c in string.letters: # Take only characters idstring = idstring + c order_id = idstring[0:20] # Take only the first 20 characters order_id = "%s%x" % (order_id, time.time()) # Combine with current time in hex for unique ID return order_id Most current information can be found at: http://www.mindview.net/Etc/notes.html =================== Bruce Eckel http://www.BruceEckel.com Contains free electronic books: "Thinking in Java 2e" & "Thinking in C++ 2e" Please subscribe to my free newsletter -- just send any email to: join-eckel-oo-programming(a)earth.lyris.net My schedule can be found at: http://www.mindview.net/Calendar ===================

ZCatalog + Directory product question
by Jlio Dinis Silva 15 May '01

15 May '01

Hi, supose you have a product with two classes: MyCategory | ---------- MyLink Both classes are CatalogAware. The ideia of this classes is to implement a Directory like yahoo (think about the Yiahw product). Now I start creating my Directory. My classes have a property "active" that I use to activate and deactivate some parts of my Directory. Now I want to search in my Catalog in which I have MyCategory and MyLink instances catalogued. When I do a search I want to retrieve only results with the "active" property "on". This is ease no big deal. But I want to guarante that all PARENTS of a given Mylink are all with active property "on". Yes no big deal, for each result from my search I run trough the getPath(data_record_id) or even PARENTS and check for each Parent if they are all with active==on. Well the problem arises when you have 30 results in your search and all are Mylinks in a directory depth path of 10 category... The search becomes to heavy,i.e, scalability is compromised. I'm thinking I could use the zope security engine to do the active/deactive trick, i.e, when I deactivate one MyCategory I uncheck some security entry, then listing my directory I do a dtml-in with skip-unauthorized, and when I do a search I try to getObject MyLink's results as a anonymous role and then skip_unauthorized. I think this skip_unauthorized could be the solution for this ZCatalog+Directory product scalability, because instead of running trough the PARENTS and check a property, I will be using zope's internal security mecanism. Any hints, Júlio Dinis Silva _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com.

Product Installation via the Web?
by Rahsheen Porter 15 May '01

15 May '01

I'm behind an extremely anal firewall here at work and was wondering if there is a way for me to install products on my Zope server via the web. I noticed ZInstaller (I think that's the name) on ZopeZen.org, but I can't even install that for reasons mentioned above :) Is there any way I can get around this? I was thinking maybe uploading the packages into the ZODB and somehow doing evil DTML tricks to get it installed, but I don't know enough DTML to fathom whether something like that is even possible. Any ideas? --- Rahsheen Porter __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Auctions - buy the things you want at great prices http://auctions.yahoo.com/
