Newbie Q: Zope Best Practices

I wish to humbly solicit some advice from some seasoned Zope developers: After reading most of the Zope documentation I could find, I'm creating an intranet application as my first Zope websites. I'm trying to make a news page that would be suitable (read "simple enough") for a non-techy to maintain. So a "news admin" would be able to add/edit/remove news stories. And a summary of all current news stories would show up on the main "news" page. Each summary would have a title, abstract and a link to the full news story page. OK, so anticipating that we would like to archive the news stories and make them searchable, and that there will be quite a few of them (several a day), what would be the best way to implement this? Here are the ways i've though of, some of which i've tried implementing to some extent: 1. Create a "NewsStory" ZClass. The newsadmin can login to the Zope management interface and select "News Story" from the add list. Each news story creates a separate object in the "news" folder. This works OK initially, but after a while, there would be tons of items in this folder which would be a little unwieldly to manage. Also, it seems using a ZClass for anything is sneered at by seasoned developers? 2. Store all stories in an RDBMS. I mocked this up using ZGadfly, and I suppose it would be almost as easy to hook up to MySQL instead. Would this be the "right" way to do it, or is it better to store the stuff right in your ZODB instead? 3. Store the stories as objects in the ZODB-- not quite sure what i'm talking about on this one yet, but SquishDot does something like this, and i've been reading through the squishdot source trying to figure it out. Is this substantially the same, or different than (1)? I know i'm a complete newbie on this one-- would anyone care to offer some advice on how to proceed? Regards, Dave

IMHO this is an error from the FSF, and being a fanatic GPL defenser like I am, it's hard for me to write this. I repeat my point here: you can download any GPLed software sources, compile it with a proprietary compiler, use it under a proprietary operating system, and all is allowed, except that if you redistribute the software even along with the compiler and operating system, the software's license must be GPL, while the compiler's and operating system's ones remain "proprietary" because the software isn't in any way a part of either the compiler or the operating system in itself. Then, following this (my) reasoning, you can download my GPLed code and install it to run it from Zope without any restriction, provided you redistribute my code under the GPL and you don't use parts of my code from your own code: just click on the "Test" tab for my external method and it's ok for me (and probably not for the FSF): my code isn't any part of either Zope's code nor your own software's code. auto increment in a Gadfly database?

Is there a way to add a auto_increment column in a Gadfly database as you can in MySQL? I have been searching the archives, maybe I am not using the correct terminology. Any help anyone could provide would be great. Thanks.

Zope has provided us with a very interesting approach (in particular how to combine object orientation and persistance in a system in a very straighforeward way), but not yet enough unfortunatly :-). I have a similar need...with a twist. I was going to just wrap the whole thing in a dtml-try block but thought I would ask. I have a folder of images called 'images'. I have a database field called LOGO and a form field called LOGO in an update form that is loaded with values retrieved from the DB. When submitting the form, in my ZSQL method, I check to see if there is an image name (text) in the DB field LOGO. If there is, see if it matches an image object with the same name in the 'images' folder. If it matches, and there is a NEW image (selected from the file system with a 'type=file') that needs to replace the image object of the name in the LOGO form field. If there is a value in the LOGO database field, but no image object exists with that name, then use the selected image filename chosen to create a new image object with that name as the object ID. dd/mm/yyyy date into MySQL

Hi, What would be the best way to take a date in the format 'dd/mm/yyyy' from a form and insert it into a date field in a MySQL table, which takes the format yyyy/mm/dd? I could have seperate fields for day, month and year and piece them together before inserting them in the table. But, is it possible to take a complete date, and change it format before inserting it in a MySQL table? Having looked at the Zope Book nothing obvious jumped out. dtml question - please somebody help me...

ok, I can't work out how to do this. I want to call a zclass add form from dtml something like... <dtml-call expr="capfiles.manage_addProduct(id='', title=title)"> now the class I created is called capella so the path to the form I want is /manage_addProduct/capella/capellaClass_factory. how do I do this? i've been trying to work it out for days :-( please help. thanks Dan

Hi, Just to let everyone know, I've unfuggered the 1.1.0 distributions on Zope.org and Squishdot.org. The ones up there now shouldn't suffer from the errors some people have been experiencing... I am planning a 1.2.0 release once I figure out how to make sgmllib.py not to stupid things with XHTML. Anyone who's interested in this, please give me a shout :-) (Does Zope 2.3.2+ ship with a fast XML parser? If so, what's it called and where do I import it from?)
