Sure. You would need an External Method and either the Python modules "urllib" or "httplib" or the Python module "ZPublisher.Client". This gives you the HTTP part. Modern Zope distributions contain a "pyexpat" module, see below the "Shared" package. This will allow the XML parsing. > Id like to then be able to write it to *my* database using a ZSQL method.. It appears that you do not need to go through Zope for that. An external Python script should be able to do it, too. Dieter

You and Chris both have two needs, to get the XML into Zope and to do something meaningful with it once it is in there. ParsedXML parses and stores XML as a DOM tree, currenlty the standard object API for XML, and gives you a Zope management interface for that. Your other problem is getting the XML from the external HTTP server into Zope. There are simple ways to do this in Python, you might have more complex needs that would require more thought. > Is it relatively straightforward to use? I think so! > I tried > installing on a Win98 test Zope 2.3.1 and got a variety of errors and have > not had time to go back to it. No windows release yet, we need to compile the parser there, which is slow going for me because I'm not experienced in windoes. Duncan Booth made a MSVC project for an older version, if anyone has updated this for the parser in ParsedXML 1.0 and can get me the library, I can release a windows binary. > -----Original Message----- > From: Chris Beaumont [mailto:cbeaumon@msri.org] > Sent: Thursday, April 05, 2001 4:42 PM > To: zope(a)zope.org > Subject: [Zope] Can Zope act as an XML capable http client? > Can I use Zope to connect to this DB and download the XML via regular > HTTP, and then parse it? > Id like to then be able to write it to *my* database using a ZSQL method.. > > Is this feasible? attach and debug a running zope?
by Randall F. Kern 06 Apr '01

I'm trying to track down a nasty data-corrupting hang, and would love to get stack traces from the zope. I've tried A Very Cool Trick[1] from Barry, but I haven't been able to get it to work. Any solutions out there to get stack traces from a stuck zope? [1] http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-list/1999-June/006153.html Thanks! -Randy

Promlem getting the current object in PythonScript
by Jérôme Loisel 06 Apr '01

06 Apr '01

Hi! I tried asking a question about this yesterday, and failed miserably in describing my problem. I apologize for that. Please read on. I have taken pains to write a very clear explanation with a code sample and precise data. My basic question is this: I have code which is called from standard_html_footer. When that code was a DTML Method, I used this(). Now that this code is a PythonScript, how do I access the same object? "context" and "context.this()" do not work reliably. Read more for details. I have a DTML Method called "adminMenu". That method is called in standard_html_footer like so: "<dtml-var adminMenu>". It prints nothing for anonymous users... But if the user is authenticated, it prints a context-sensitive admin menu. If the user is viewing a DTML Document to which he has "write access", the admin menu prints a "Edit this document" link. There are various other options. For many of them, I have to know which object the user is viewing. This works fine. But the "adminMenu" DTML Method soon grew big and cumbersome. Last week, I decided to re-write it as a PythonScript.. The code is mostly a port (very similar), and is called the same way: "<dtml-var adminMenu>" from the standard_html_footer. Yet I am now having problems getting a hold of the object which the user is viewing. Specifically, "context" never seems to refer to DTML Documents. It seems to ignore them like it does DTML Methods. An example: I use the following code to get my "debugging" information: print " File name: %s " % (context.getId()) print " File type: %s " % (context.meta_type) With a Folder... viewing http://www.levinux.org/ (a Folder) File name: levinux File type: Folder So far so good... With a DTML Document... viewing http://www.levinux.org/liens.html (a DTML Document) File name: levinux File type: Folder This is not expected behavior. My tests seem to indicate that, context.getId() and context.meta_type yield the same result as context.this().getId() and context.this().meta_type. So I am stumped. I am running Zope 2.3.1b2 (binary release, python 1.5.2, linux2-x86) on a Mandrake 7.2 system. Thanks for reading me. I hope you can help. getting a value in a string
by dirk＠xs4all.nl 06 Apr '01

06 Apr '01

Hi all, today I had my first zope day. I read some documentation, did the (elvis) tutorial, then tried to make something simple. (I thought) I want to make some simple picture album. For now it seemed best to create a folder for the images inside the folder which holds the DTML code. Displaying all the available pictures works. But I actually want to display a thumbnail which is a link to the bigger picture and I want a link to the real full size picture so anyone who wants to can download it. Alle sizes have some common part in their name, let's say img_100.jpg, img_100_640x480.jpg and img_100_thumb.jpg. Okay, now the problem. I can get the file name of the image that I display, but I can't get in a variable. I can display it but I can't assign it to some string. And I need it to be a string so I can manipulate it. How can I get a value in a string? Dirk

RE: [Zope] Apache virtual host combined with Zope
by Andy Gimblett 06 Apr '01

06 Apr '01

I've had success with both FastCGI and ProxyPass/SiteRoot, but haven't used VirtualHostMonster (took a look, but decided that SiteRoot could handle my needs for now). No experience of PCGI. I found this How-To: http://www.zope.org/Members/anser/apache_zserver to be probably the most useful/clear. As for "state of the art" and what you "should" be using, I'm not sure... I'd just say use whatever works for you. :) (Sorry, evasive answer, I realise!). One thing to note: I couldn't find out how to use FastCGI to serve _part_ of my Zope site as a virtual. In ProxyPass this is easy (which is why I'm using it), but I could only get FastCGI to serve the entire Zope tree. I'd prefer to use FastCGI if I could, because then I can force all requests to go through Apache, whereas using ProxyPass, you could just make a request to :8080, as it were. Does anyone know a way around this?
