Non-caching version of POPMail ?
by Loren Stafford 04 Apr '01

04 Apr '01

David, I'm planning to modify POPMail (or more likely, make a derived product POPMailNc) so that there is no persistent message cache. I just wanted to pass the idea by you, so you could tell me if I'm doing something stupid or if you've already solved my problem for me in a newer version of POPMail. I'm using POPMail to couple my Zope server to another product (PerfectTracker). Zope initiates Tracker incidents via sendmail and receives responses from the Tracker at a dedicated POP3 mailbox, which it polls (using Xron) every 5-10 minutes. I've discovered that if I ever delete messages from the mailbox manually (i.e. using a POP client other than POPMail) POPMail's persistent message cache gets hopelessly out of sync with the mailbox, and it begins to deliver messages from its cache when there are new messages with the same UID in the mailbox. That's bad. While I don't need to delete messages behind POPMail's back, I can't really prevent someone from doing so, due to the nature of our mail system. So I propose to make POPMail's cache non-persistent (I guess it really wouldn't be a cache then, would it?). I don't expect a performance problem, because, if I delete old messages regularly I will never have more than a few hundred messages in the mailbox. (Messages correspond to new employees.) I think I can make uidDict and MessageDict nonpersistent simply by changing their names to _v_uidDict and _v_MessasgeDict. Is that correct? -- Thanks for your input -- Loren

Need design advice
by Edmund Goppelt 04 Apr '01

04 Apr '01

I'd like to add two capabilities to my city government web site: 1. users should be able to initiate discussions about legislation pending before our City Council. i.e., discussions will be tied to the relevant bill document. 2. users must register in order to post. I'd like enough information so that if someone posts death threats or the like they can be tracked down. I don't need threaded discussions (though that would be nice) so I'm tempted just to roll my own. Is there anything out there in the way of easy to use discussion Products that I could pop in to my site without buying into a gigantic set of associated machinery a la CMF? As far as enforcing some minimal accountability on the part of posters, the Membership product seems like my best bet, though there are some things I'd like to change, e.g., I'd like user info stored in a SQL db, not Zope, passwords should not be encrypted 'cause I want to send them out every month, and I want different info. stored about users than the default properties provided by the Product. How hard do you think this would be with Membership? Are there any other Products I should consider IYO? Thanks! --

running frozen ZServer standalone

I'm pretty much giving up on finding an old Bobo for Medusa. My last chance seems to be Zope. (After that it's only going back to Apache und Perl). 1) Is it possible to freeze ZServer and running it standalone? (It's no problem with Medusa). 2) If yes, what are the caveats? Is there really no way for it to support standard CGI? 3) Can I run it nonblocking if using a Python with thread support compiled in? Will freeze retain the ./configure --with-thread? 4) Does anyone have a recipe for extracting just the ZServer relevant parts from a Zope distribution? I'm running short on time, so there's no time for poking around. TIA, Eugene

ZClass' Method permissions
by Oleg Broytmann 04 Apr '01

04 Apr '01

Hello! Can anyone explain the mechanism under "Define Permissions" tab on ZClasses? I do not understand the screen. Why can I set "Delete Objects" permisson to "Add Site Roots"? Why do I need it? What's worse, I don't understand this explanation: "For ZClass methods, only permissions that are defined for the ZClass are permitted. " I want to protect a DTML Method in a ZClass so that it won't be accessible by Anonimous. Example: I want to protect importRSS method of RSS Channel product. Currently, anyone who discovered the name of the object can call importRSS with any URL, thus cracking my site. And it is easy to discover these objects as any page on the site has view_source link. Questions on roles and permissions
by Fernstrom, Christer 04 Apr '01

04 Apr '01

Some questions on roles and permissions: 1) I want the same *authenticated user* to have different permissions at different parts of my server. Are local roles the best way to handle this? 2) How can I get hold of the local user roles? <dtml-var expr="AUTHENTICATED_USER.getRoles()"> only returns the global role associated with the authenticated user. 3) Is there a way to retreive the permissions that the authenticated user has on a given object? 4) I have observed that when a user has been authenticated at a deeper level in the folder hierarchy, then <dtml-var expr="AUTHENTICATED_USER.getUserName()"> on a higher level yields 'Anonymous User'. Bug or normal behaviour? I'm building my first real Zope application, so please bear with me... christer

User Database and ZOPE Security
by David Woods 04 Apr '01

04 Apr '01

Hello, I have a site which uses a SQL-Server database to maintain usernames and passwords. This allows me to create pretty user interfaces to allow Teaching Assistants to create user accounts without having to learn ZOPE and which allows me a lot more control over the accounts they create. It also allows me to have greater control over the interface students use for logging in to our site. The students who then log in using these accounts are considered anonymous users by ZOPE. I also have some videos on my site that, because of confidentiality issues, must be protected from unauthorized access. I use ZOPE security for this. When the students need to access the videos, they are left logging in twice. My question is this: Is there a way to avoid having to have two separate sets of usernames and passwords? Specifically, is there a way to get ZOPE security to validate against my SQL-Server database instead of its internal acl-users database in allowing access to the videos? Are there utilities to accomplish this? Any suggestions? Thanks, David Woods University of Wisconsin, Madison
