Should the use of hasRole() be discouraged?
by Hamish Lawson 14 Mar '01

14 Mar '01

I've read comments from others whereby they've reluctantly been obliged to give users a certain role in order for some products to work, due to a hasRole() call in the product. But why do products call hasRole()? I would have thought that for most cases the proper thing to do was to test for the user having the necessary *permission*; that is, the product shouldn't test for the user having the 'Editor' role, but for having the 'Edit' permission (roles just being a means to simplify the allocation of permissions to users). Or have I missed something? Hamish Lawson ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? FTP File System in Linux!
by Christopher J. Kucera 14 Mar '01

14 Mar '01

Found this on Freshmeat this morning: http://ftpfs.sourceforge.net/ I thought it could possibly be of some import. Basically, it's a kernel module that allows you to mount an FTP session as if it were a filesystem. This could be of great help to people who are trying to get away from using Zope's web interface all the time. I've not actually tried it myself yet, so I can't vouch for it's usefulness, but it should be an interesting project to watch evolve . . . -CJ

user changed to emergency user by accident?
by Joshua 14 Mar '01

14 Mar '01

Hi For some weird reason I suddenly lost all privileges to my zope site and was turned into the emergency user. I cannot create folders or documents. I get an error: Error Type: EmergencyUserCannotOwn Error Value: Objects cannot be owned by the emergency user I am logged in as I always do (root level manager). Why in the world would Zope turn me into the emergency user? I'm not worried about having access. I can make another user I suppose. I just want to fix this problem. Is this a bug? Has anyone experienced anything like this? Joshua

Re: jcNTUserFolder query - authenticating when Zope is not running on DC

Hello, Well, jcNTUserFolder is designed to run on the domain controller. The problem is, I don't know how to *enumerate* users on a distant controller. Also, I don't know how to ask what is the controller of a domain. jcNTUserFolder try to log the user on the computer running Zope. This always succeed when the machine is a domain controller, and the user is in the domain. However, when the machine running zope is not the domain controller, you have to create all the users of that domain in jcNTUserFolder (with the syntax domain\username), and on NT, give those users the right to log on from the network on the machine running Zope. This is difficult to do when you have a lot of users, but sorry, there isn't another way right now, until of course I find a way to enumerate users on a distant controller. regards, jephte.clain(a)univ-reunion.fr

Limiting depth on object creation
by Darin Lee 14 Mar '01

14 Mar '01

Zopisitas, I am building a threaded discussion product which integrates with a news article product I recently wrote. Inside of the article (folderish Zclass) I would like to allow my users to post "reponses." Where I am running into problems is that I would like to limit my "reply-to" depth to only three levels. In other words, I would like to limit a user to only adding three subdirectories in a directory, or 3 folderish objects (responses) beneath a single folderish object (discussion folder). Is there an easy way to check for this? How does one accomplish this in zope? Thanks in advance, -Darin Lee

How to test for a user having a permission?
by Hamish Lawson 14 Mar '01

14 Mar '01

I know I can map methods to permissions and so have the Zope machinery take care of testing whether the user has permission to call a method, but say I want to decide whether to display an 'Edit' button on the page depending on whether the user has the appropriate permission for editing. How do I test for the user having this permission - is there some kind of hasPermission() method I can use? I could make an assumption about which roles have which permissions and call hasRole(), but that doesn't seem right to me* - I don't think my code should care about what roles the user has, only whether they have the required permission. RE: [Zope] zope for intranet?
by Eric Casteleijn 14 Mar '01

[*SCHNIPP*] > I recommend searching Zope.org for some > products which will > do what you want and more, for example WorldPilot. I've tried to locate the worldpilot product for the last 2 months, but have been unable to. At first the site linked to by zope.org and zope treasures gave a 'server not found'. Now they link to a sourceforge project with no released files. I found this very strange, and was expecting a comment on this list, but i haven't seen any yet. Thought i'd point this out, as it's bound to confuse the person who asked the question, as it did me. (If they read this, I would recommend Zope to them. I'm still pretty much a newbie, but i've benefited from Zope and it's community enough that i don't even want to look back on the way i developed web-apps before. All of what you indicated is very possible in Zope.) eric 'what was my middle name again' casteleijn > -- > Andy McKay.

Creating images on the fly
by Oliver Sturm 14 Mar '01

14 Mar '01

Hi, I'm looking for a way to create images on the fly. They'd need to contain short strings, typeset in different fonts. Something like gfont, but accessible from zope. Any ideas, please? Best regards, Oliver mailto:sturm@oliver-sturm.de

In perl I would just lock a file, bump the > value, and then return the value. Used to be you could create a ZClass for your order and store a class attribute that could be "bumped" up everytime you create an instance of the class. However I found a security flaw in this, and DC eradicated it in a recent hotfix. You can however still do it from an external method AFAIK. Create an external method like so: def getNextNumber(ZClass): if hasattr(ZClass, 'sequence'): ZClass.setClassAttr('sequence', ZClass.getClassAttr('sequence') + 1) else: ZClass.setClassAttr('sequence', 1) return ZClass.getClassAttr('sequence') Then call it from the ZClass constructor method (which is usually a DTML method, but could be a Python script) and use the value it returns to either set the id or whatever property you are storing the order number into. I would like to see a secure version of this functionality exposed to DTML and TTW scripts, but DC seems a bit adverse to the idea. I will probably create a patch at some point anyhow and see if they like it. -- | Casey Duncan | Kaivo, Inc. | cduncan(a)kaivo.com `------------------>
