Q: Request macro recorder?
by Daniel Dittmar 15 Feb '01

Does something like a macro recorder for Zope requests exists? I'm starting to learn Zope programming. And this means currently that I'm constantly pressing the same buttons in the browser to test the product. It would be a great help if I could press these buttons once, which would produce a Python script which does the same by issuing HTML requests (or XML-RPC requests). Daniel

RE: [Zope] How many objects can ZODB hold?

Does anyone know how to build python 1.5.2 with the linux 2.4 kernel for large file support? And if anything else would need to be done to support a FileStorage of > 2GB? command line Zope?
by Kyler B. Laird 15 Feb '01

I'm trying to roll out Zope for wide usage and one of the things users want already is a command line interface to Zope. At first, I thought that it was a silly request, but the more I think about it, the more I like it. In order to provide this, I need a way to run Python such that it connects to the ZODB (perhaps requiring ZEO?) and gives the user access to the database only as a specified user (with the option of manually authenticating to receive additional roles). Is this easy to do? Has it already been done? I read about importing Persistence and ZODB, but I'm clueless about setting up a user's environment in Python. Any pointers to appropriate documentation will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. --kyler

Searching ZCatalog on multiple properties
by Chris Muldrow 15 Feb '01

15 Feb '01

I've got some DTML Documents with properties Category and Author, and I'm trying to build a search interface for ZCatalog. What I want to do is build a multiple select list of the Author's names, but I want to use the Category to only display the names of People who have written columns. As an added wrinkle, the Author field present on the files corresponds to an "expanded name" sitting in a mysql DB. In other words, a column I've written might have cmuldrow in the Author property--I query the DB to return Chris Muldrow to display to searchers. Here's my code so far--it queries the DB correctly and returns a good list of names, but not filtered by Category. I tried a dtml-in tag calling NewsCatalog({'Category':'Column'}), but wherever I put it doesn't seem to work. Any ideas? Thanks! Chris Muldrow muldrow(a)mac.com <dtml-var standard_html_header> <h2><dtml-var title_or_id> </h2> <form action="ColumnistFind" method="get"> <select name="User" size=10 MULTIPLE> <dtml-in expr="uniqueValuesFor('User')"> <dtml-let authName=sequence-item> <option value="<dtml-var sequence-item>"><dtml-in expr="SearchAuthors(user=authName)"><dtml-var authorName></dtml-in></options> </dtml-let> </dtml-in> <input type="submit" name="Search" value="Submit query"> </select> </form> <dtml-var standard_html_footer>

the misc_ dictionary
by aZaZel 15 Feb '01

15 Feb '01

Hi all, I'm a little bit confused on how to use the misc_ dictionary to define product resources. I've looked into other products such as ZCatalog ZGadflyDA and SiteAccess but it's use is not so clear for me especially because most products only need to associate an icon with a python class. Someone can explain a bit more how to use it? There is an usege policy? thanks in advance Alberto

I am new to Zope and these lists. So I hope to learn where to post things, and how to avoid posting questions already asked. What I am most interested in knowing: Is there support for pages with (the equivalent of) applets or java swing controls? In other words, a page with controls that can be dynamically updated without resending the entire page? Is there support for including python code in a page that will be run on the browser (akin to javascript)? I understand that session support is coming. How soon? I created an ODBC connection to Visual FoxPro tables. Once I run zsql the tables are locked until I shut the Zope server down. Is there a way to share the tables and/or release them? Where does one post enhancement requests? Is there a way to search the archives for a topic. The only archive display I found was by date, and it seems that would require a lot of digging to find something. Bob Gailer mailto:ramrom@earthling.net 303-442-2625

Hello, Does FSSession (http://www.zope.org/Members/gaaros/FSSession) work with Zope 2.3.x on *nix? If not, how can this be solved? Best regards, Peter

MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.
by Donald Braman 15 Feb '01

15 Feb '01

Hello! I'm in a situation that I'm sure many are familiar with...choosing between MySQL or PostgreSQL. My main goals are stability under high load and ease of use. I don't need transactions. I know the standard comparison: MySQL is faster, simpler, and more popular, while PostgreSQL is slower but is more fully SQL standards based, handles transactions, etc. Are these generally accurate descriptions? I'm wondering what people who have used either (or both!) think about using these (or other databases) in conjunction with Zope. Are there any special cases where one or the other works better or worse with Zope? Donald Braman donald.braman(a)yale.edu
