Extremely slow connection on local network (Zope 2.2.5, Win2k)
by Matt Gushee 31 Jan '01

Hi, folks-- I'm trying to set up a Zope-based intranet web site for my company, but there's a very puzzling performance issue. Basically, any attempt to connect to the server from another machine on the local network is really, really slow: for example, I just visited the default home page (the "Welcome to Zope" page that comes w/ the installation), and it took 25 seconds to load. More complex pages can take over a minute. I don't think Zope itself is running slowly, because if I log onto the server and access the site locally, it pops right up. I'm also running IIS on the same machine, and have no trouble accessing the IIS website from various hosts (I did make sure they weren't trying to use the same port -- Zope is on 8080, IIS is on 9680). Here's some info about the environment: Server Platform: ---------------- OS: Windows 2000 Professional w/ Service Pack 1 (installed w/ Norton Ghost) Hardware: Celeron 600 Mhz, 160MB RAM Quirks: I added PyXML and ReportLab to <zope_dir>\lib\python. I also added an external path with some other python packages to sys.path in z2.py. There is a separate Python 1.5.2 installation on the machine. Network: -------- Type: Ethernet 10-base-T, single subnet Router: FlowPoint DSL OSs: Mainly Windows 2000, with one Solaris box and a small but varying number of Linux, NT 4.0, and Win98 boxes. Domain Controllers (2): Windows 2000 Server running in mixed mode By the way, we have frequent performance problems with the network, but nothing nearly as severe as this. We suspect that not having enuf client licenses for Win2k Server may be part of the problem, but I don't see why that would affect Zope, especially since IIS seems to be fine. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you may have. -- Matt Gushee Consultant Architag International 6989 South Jordan Road, Suite 6 Englewood, CO 80112 Phone: 303.766.1336, x124 Cell: 303.941.0759 Fax: 303.699.8331 E-Mail: mgushee(a)architag.com Web: http://architag.com

Little Zope horror story
by Dieter Maurer 31 Jan '01

Another little Zope horror story. You need to be worried only if you start external background processes from Zope. Today was not a good Zope day for me: Colleagues are currently installing a new firewall. Something went wrong and the Zope Webserver was frozen in connections with the backoffice behind the firewall. To get things start again, I stopped Zope and tried to restart it, but in vain! Zope continued to report "address already in use". Of cause, there was no longer any Zope process that used that port... After 1/2 hour of desparate search, I found the culprit. It was again an external background process. It had inherited the open listening socket and kept the port blocked. It, too, was frozen by the firewall and made no longer any progress. Killing the external process let Zope start again. The listening socket should get a "close_on_exec", too, as now do the request sockets. Dieter

How to get a name of uploaded file
by Radek Hnilica 31 Jan '01

Hello zopists, I create a small application. User enters file via web interface, and this is parsed and pushed into SQL. the input form is DTML method like this ==== DTML method: send_file == I use [] instead of <> [dtml-var standard_html_header] ... [form action="receive_file" method="post" enctype="multipart/form-data"] ... [input type="File" name="file" value=""] ... [input type="submit" value=" Send File "] ... [/form] [dtml-var standard_html_footer] ====== end of file ===== The receive_file is external python method ===== receive_file, function name= rcv_file from string import strip import pg def rcv_file(self, REQUEST): ... fileobj = REQUEST.form['file'] filelist = fileobj.readlines() fileobj.close for line in filelist: (* parse line and push it into SQL server *) ... ====== end of file ==== Is there any way how to get a name of uploaded file. I mean another than let user type the name in another field. I was looking in REQUEST object and nothing about the filename found there. I allso read Zope Book, digging in documentation arround, but with no success. -- Radek Hnilica <Radek_Hnilica at LinuxFan dot COM>

Rational Continous sourcecontrol with Zope??
by peter bengtson 31 Jan '01

Community friends, I work as a web application developer for a software company, using Zope and occationally PHP. My company has recently bought and installed a software called Continous. It's sourcecontrol and issue/bug tracking. The kind of stuff that compiled-language-developers use. The company that does Continous is Rational ...something. My CTO is very keen to use this. He wants also me to use it for my Zope stuff. I offered to "checkin" some backup zexp files there, and use the issue/bug tracking system without using the sourcecontrol stuff. Is there a way to integrate websites done in Zope with sourcecontrol systems such as Continous?? ...without massive overhead and excessive clumpsy handling. I like the idea of sourcecontrol on Zope, leaving the Version product behind, but I don't want to loose the fast and flexible workflow I have with Zope today. Any advice out there on sourcecontrol systems together with Zope? Peter

I do not know, what you mean with the "submit string" (I expect, you mean the "query string"). Almost surely, you will be able to use it "multi-purpose", i.e. append your language information. > how do i set a var for a user for the complete session? seems to call for a session product (--> zope.org) > would cookies solve my problem? may well be possible > where do i find know-how to set a cookie and work with it (never done that?)? I think there is a HowTo on zope.org. Do you know, that you can search zope.org....? Dieter

Re: [Zope] How to pass a dictionary object from PythonScript to DTML method?

What goes wrong? Are you sure, the exception comes from the DTML? Look at the backtrace, it should tell you. You DTML should not be able to raise this "KeyError". Dieter

Re: [Zope] More ZClass questions: How to get a complete property list?
by Dieter Maurer 31 Jan '01

Ernesto Revilla writes: > Say xxx is an instance of a ZClass and resides in the root directory. > http://localhost:8080/xxx/propertyMap > will return a map of all properties of the root folder not of the xxx > object. Apparently, your "xxx" instance does not have a "propertyMap" attribute/method. The containing folder has. Therefore, this is used (by acquisition). Dieter

I don't know when (or > if) that was ever integrated into the zope core, but I'm sure that if you > search Zope.org for Latin-1 you should find it... This time, ZCatalog is better than its reputation: If you start Zope with the "-L" option, then "locale" support is enabled. ZCatalog will then be able to correctly handle any local encoding, provided it is an 8-bit encoding. Dieter

You will find there the method "setHeader". It does what you want. You will find many other usefull methods, too. Dieter
