He Lived Alone
by Rich Pezzullo 22 Dec '00

22 Dec '00

, I couldn't let the season go by without passing this along. Best wishes for a happy holiday season and a joyous and prosperous new year. If you need to reach me, you can always call my 1 800 number. Rich Pezzullo This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan. The following is his request. I think it is reasonable..... PLEASE. Would you do me the kind favor of sending this to as many people as you can? Christmas will be coming soon and some credit is due to our U.S. service men and women for our being able to celebrate these festivities. Let's try in this small way to pay a tiny bit of what we owe. Make people stop and think of our heroes, living and dead, who sacrificed themselves for us. Please, do your small part to plant this small seed. Subject: 'TWAS THE NIGHT IT WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE 'TWAS THE NIGHT IT WAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, HE LIVED ALL ALONE, IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF PLASTER AND STONE. I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE, AND TO SEE JUST WHO IN THIS HOME DID LIVE. I LOOKED ALL ABOUT, A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE, NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS, NOT EVEN A TREE. > > NO STOCKING BY MANTLE, JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND, ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES OF FAR DISTANT LANDS. WITH MEDALS AND BADGES, AWARDS OF ALL KINDS, A SOBER THOUGHT CAME THROUGH MY MIND. FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT, IT WAS DARK AND DREARY, FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER, ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY. THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING, SILENT, ALONE, CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME. THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE, THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER, NOT HOW I PICTURED A UNITED STATES SOLDIER. WAS THIS THE HERO OF WHOM I'D JUST READ? CURLED UP ON A PONCHO, THE FLOOR FOR A BED? I REALIZED THE FAMILIES THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT, OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT. SOON ROUND THE WORLD, THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY, AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY. THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR, BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS, LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE. I COULDN'T HELP WONDER HOW MANY LAY ALONE, ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME. THE VERY THOUGHT BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE, I DROPPED TO MY KNEES AND STARTED TO CRY. THE SOLDIER AWAKENED AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE, "SANTA DON'T CRY, THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE, I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM, I DON'T ASK FOR MORE, MY LIFE IS MY GOD, MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS. THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER HE'D SOON DRIFTED TO SLEEP, I COULDN'T CONTROL IT, I CONTINUED TO WEEP. I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS, SO SILENT AND STILL AND WE BOTH SHIVERED FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL. I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT, THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR SO WILLING TO FIGHT. THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER, WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE, WHISPERED, "CARRY ON SANTA, IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE." ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH, AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT. "MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND, AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT." This poem was written by a Marine stationed in Okinawa Japan. The following is his request. I think it is reasonable..... PLEASE. zope, worldpilot, IMAP, POP...
by marc lindahl 22 Dec '00

I've been investigating how to do web-based email for zope users... it seemed like worldpilot was cool (BTW, where is it??) Then I was talking to a friend, who mentioned vaguely something about perl-script that implemented a yahoo or hotmail type system, and it solved the problem of username/password admin on the mail server, by avoiding it! Basically it took advantage of the 'dead letter' email account on a POP or IMAP server where all the bogus email goes, and it pulled it all in and parsed it against it's own list of users, etc. My question is, therefore, is it reasonable to try to do something like this in Zope, with the goal of using the Zope membership info (username & password) for defining the mail users? The only thing I find that's even close is POPMailProduct, but it's lacking the hard part... Marc

Adding a ZClass Instance to a Specific Folder
by Leichtman, David J 22 Dec '00

22 Dec '00

The default constructor when a ZClass is created calls: <dtml-with "ZClass_name.createObjectInFolder(REQUEST['id'],REQUEST)"> </dtml-with> And when you programmatically add a ZClass instance, it's like this: <dtml-with "manage_addProducts('Your_product')"> <dtml-call "ZClass_name.ZClass_name_add(_.None,_)"> </dtml-with> This creates the instance in the directory of the method from which the call was made. The Question: How do you go about adding an instance to a specific folder? I can't, for the life of me, figure it out. I've tried many different things, and I've looked for flags in createObjectInFolder, but to no avail.

Zope Book: UniqueValuesFor
by Milos Prudek 22 Dec '00

22 Dec '00

Regarding the upcoming Zope Book: There are some examples for UniqueValuesFor method and "_usage" syntax (it looks that only values "range:min", "range:max" and "range:min:max" are possible), but these are not mentioned in the DTML reference or API reference. Maybe Zope Book needs a ZCatalog reference, if there are methods like UniqueValuesFor... I would recommend that since the current Zope Book is a giant leap forward, these and any other language tricks that are scattered in the Zope Book chapters should be briefly mentioned in the ZopeBook DTML and API references. IMHO there are many people like me who: - are trying to start using Zope BECAUSE OF the final availability of Zope Book - for various reasons are not very comfortable with hunting information around zope.org and in Zope sources (no permanent internet connection is a strong reason) - consequently expect to find all basic information in coherent form in Zope Book Obviously, Zope Book can't contain everything. I like the sentence "this is an advanced topic and it's outside the scope of this book". Authors have put limits to what they want to achieve. I wish that the ZB is coherent in the "explanation - example - reference" trio. -- Milos Prudek

Job listings?

Is it inappropriate to post a job listing looking for Zope knowledgable coders on this list? I don't see anything in the list charter about it, but I don't want to be rude. Let me know! Name Errors: DTML Document -> External Python Document -> DTML Do cument -> ZSQL cument -> ZSQL
by Burwell, Becky <burwell＠parc.xerox.com> 21 Dec '00

21 Dec '00

I have an SQL database that I want to populate using an external Python method (because I have file I/O code). So I have something like this: DTML Document named import_file which has: <dtml-call "parsefile()"> ---- parsefile is my external Python method. def parsefile (self): # blah, blah self.record_info (arg1=value1,arg2=value2) ---- record_info is a DTML document <dtml-unless "LookupPrinter(printer=printer)"> { random code here } ---- And LookupPrinter is a ZSQL Method So I have: DTML Document -> External Python Document -> DTML Document -> ZSQL Document Is this a sane thing to have my External Python Document calling back to DTML Documents? I keep getting name error on the LookupPrinter. I tried putting: <dtml-unless "LookupPrinter(_.None, _,printer=printer)"> and I still get the name error. In essence I am trying to have code that will parse a file and then record the results in my database. Thanks. Becky.
