Re: ANN: Perl for Zope

Oh no!!! Zope by itself is bad enough. Do pull in more trouble. Zope needed to clean up before it goes too bad. Zope is powerful, but is already too difficult for beginner to learn. It is not easy to do simple things, I think this will destroy zope because It will bring in more different syntax, inconsistent implementation. Recently, there is a lots of things happening in zope, some is deeply in the root, like security, zodb, patterns, zcatalogue. If perl is going to be enter zope, couldnt it wait a bit after you clean up zope a little bit. Re-write dtml syntax and make zope dtml more easy to learn. I think that will be a bigger userbase than those perl wizzard. rgs, kentsin

by Phil Langton 26 May '00

I've been using Confera but want to get email notification working. In desperation I've downloaded and installed ZDiscussions 2.0 and ZDbase, zDiscussions and ZDConfera 1.0.0. The ZDiscussion is working but no option for email notification (although I like it). BUT no sign of ZDConfera! Instead I have 2 'Confera Topic' objects??? 1. Where is ZDConfera? 2. Apart from Squishdot, is there a simpe Zope discussion board that has email notification? Please help Phil Langton =============================================================== Phil Langton. Dept. Check out the flamefest on comp.emacs a few years ago when someone tried to introduce rudimentary perl scripting support to emacs. will the perl support be optional?

I'm assuming that the perl support is a product and therefore we don't have to install it? ^Roman

incosistant behaviour.
by Curtis Maloney 26 May '00

Greetings, I am experimenting with my first ZClass. I have inherited from Renderable, and XMLDocument. I have added a few DTML Methods, including a 'render' method. Testing has been all well and good, with pages displaying predictably when I hit the View tag, but if I hit View in the folder, which contains one of my classes as index_html, it doesn't display correctly. My class relies on being able to find methods in itself (using _.hasattr() ), but the results are as if it cannot find any. I thought this might be because render is a dtml Method, so I tried it as a DTML Document. Now when trying to view it, it asks for authentication, and denies anyone (even the superuser). What am I doing wrong? Shouldn't a ZClass member method be able to reference other members in the same ZClass? -- Have a better one, Curtis. <dtml-var standard_work_disclaimer>

Hi, >Hi everybody, > >I have a really funny problem with Zope. > >I have a Zope application, for which I have no longer the management >screens. If I try to see app/manage, I see the index_html method of app. > >Any idea ? If someone is interested I can send him the code. > >Many thanks People at metapublisher(a)beehive.de told me what the problem is (it's Product independant): http://mailman.beehive.de/pipermail/metapublisher/2000-May/000005.html So take the URL and replace manage_workspace to manage_main. Hope this helps. Paolo

Initially when I read about this, I was a bit concerned - it did seem like it was leading down a bad scary path. After thinking about it some more, I'm still a bit concerned, but I also think that this will be a nice bit of bait to use when hooking in new developers. If it including building Products in Perl, I'd be a bit more concerned, since one of the Really Nice things about Zope is the available Products, and just how easy they are to read and work with. Perl Products would be... um... unpleasant. But I've seen no indication that this is happening. Anthony

You are up against a known problem, i.e., that ZClass instances can't function as directly-renderable objects: http://classic.zope.org:8080/Collector/476/view The workaround is to download the contributed Renderable-ZClass product: http://www.zope.org/Members/lalo/Renderable-ZClass and derive your ZClass from the mix-in it provides (migrating an existing ZClass to it is painful, but doable). > > My class relies on being able to find methods in itself (using > _.hasattr() ), but the results are as if it cannot find any. Hmm, I don't know if this is the same problem; I'm sure that you can't have a ZClass instance function as the index_html for a folder out-of-the-box, though.
