by Michael Douglass 25 May '00

hi, just started working through the zcmg document from the zope site & have already found a question i cant answer. completed the first tutorial but my screen does not have such things as the control panel etc down the left side. i am wondering if i accessed the interface correctly. the process i followed was 1. logged into the members part of zope.org 2. then accessed the 'Manage items in your personal folder' link this seemed to give me the appropriate interface without control panel etc. have gone to add a user & there is no acl users link etc. sorry about asking such basic questions but am stumped. thanks in advance michael

Acquisition?
by Chris Withers 25 May '00

I just ended up using this analogy to explain aquisition to someone and wondered whether it might be helpful to others: Aquisition is to a tree of objects what inheritence is to a hierarchy of classes. Is this accurate? Chris

AUTHENTICATED_USER.getUserName() not always truthful in ZWiki
by Geoff Gardiner 25 May '00

25 May '00

I am using ZWiki and have modified a footer to show the current AUTHENTICATED_USER. It lies - occasionally but consistently. I am logged in as TestUser, and have a page footer that shows me as TestUser. I create a new ZWiki page by editing the current page and adding NewPage, then navigating to the new NewPage. This now shows me as Anonymous User. When I press the edit button I am still Anonymous User. When I save I am still Anonymous User. When I press the edit button it shows me as TestUser again. When I save I am back to Anonymous User. How can I be both TestUser and Anonymous User in the same session? Something to do with namespaces, no doubt, but what's going on? Anyone, please? RE: [Zope] Using relational DB for ZODB storage

Ivan... Hi, It's a "grassroots" effort. Jonothan Farr (jfarr(a)real.com) is heading up the project, and I'm helping. We've gotten a few prototype versions up and running using MySQL and Interbase, but I'd say we're a few weeks away from being able to release an alpha. You can get more information about the project at http://www.zope.org/Members/jim/ZODB/RelationalStorage HTH, Chris > -----Original Message----- > From: Ivan [mailto:ivan@faxnet.com] > Sent: Thursday, May 25, 2000 12:13 PM > To: zope(a)zope.org > Subject: [Zope] Using relational DB for ZODB storage > > > > Greetings, > > I am looking for ways to use a relational database (Solid, and > possibly Informix) as a storage for ZODB objects. Using relational DB for ZODB storage
by Ivan 25 May '00

25 May '00

Greetings, I am looking for ways to use a relational database (Solid, and possibly Informix) as a storage for ZODB objects. According to the ZODB How-To, development on a relational DB storage manager is taking place. However, I don't know what is the current state of this project, how I can obtain the source code, and how I can contact the developers. Perhaps someone can provide me with this information? Regards, Ivan Raikov

This will be my last mail on this.. strong opinions ahead, and they aren't representative of anybody but me. > I have to say, I'm not convinced it is. Providing Perl methods is like > drilling a hole through a dyke wall. By getting loads of perl > programmers on board, you suddenly have a large userbase wishing they > can do more in perl, so you implement perl products. (yes, > I've read the > FAQ too, hence my politicians comment...) I doubt DC would do it. The Perl community might. But that's open source. If someone wants it bad enough, it'll be done. That doesn't mean you should use it. > This userbase gets into hacking the core and bring perl into there. DC still controls CVS. I doubt this would happen, there'd be no reason for it. > Suddenly Zope is a total mess of perl and python and the > whole community > shifts onto something cleaner leaving DC high and dry and spoiling a > perfect solution... It's far from perfect now. It's quite nice. But perfect, no. There are *lots* of smart Perl people, and personally I look forward to seeing some of them join the community. It'll give more exposure to Zope. Maybe it'll give more exposure to Python, even. To me, the "dont even talk to me about Perl" attitude smacks of illogic and unearned elitism. It's silly and immature.

Relational DB Storage Manager for ZODB
by Ivan 25 May '00

25 May '00

Greetings, I am interested in using a relational database (Solid, and possibly Informix) for ZODB object storage. I read the ZODB How-To, according to which development on a relational DB storage manager is taking place. However, I don't know what is the current state of this project, where I can get a copy of the source, and how I can contact its developers. Perhaps someone can provide me with this information? Regards, Ivan Raikov

Properties
by Tom Scheidt 25 May '00

25 May '00

Is there any way to manipualte properties outside of the Zope management area? I have a lot of properties I need to add to a certain document and it's really time consuming to enter then one by one. Also, Is there any way to arrange the order of properties? For instance, I've added a bunch called story 1a through story1z, and story1r is misspelled as "stry1r". Currently, it seems to keep them in order I have to delete all the properties after the 1r property and enter them all again. Thanks.
