OT: WebObjects drops to $699
by Kevin Dangoor 16 May '00

Thought some people might be interested in this... Apple has dropped the price of WebObjects from $50,000 to $699... http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2000/may/15webobjects.html Some of those people who previously have said "how does Zope compare to ColdFusion" may now start asking how it compares to WebObjects. (I honestly have no idea, having never used WO.) Apple also announced that the next version of WO is buzzword-friendly (ie, written in 100% pure Java, and supporting servlets and beans and ...) >>> Terry Kerr wrote > the first method is missing a doc string! > > methods in python products that you wish to call from the web need doc strings. This dates back to the prehistory of Zope - Bobo used the presence or absence of a doc string to mark whether a method was "published" and accessible from the web. >>> TomJenkins(a)zentuit.com wrote > Are you sure you have to have doc strings? I have a product that > has a couple of classes where some methods don't have doc > strings. These methods are callable from Zope. Yes, but are they callable directly from the web? eg http://myhost/blah/myproduct/methodwithoutdocstring ? ZopeLaw

Are there any other attorneys out there learning ZOPE. If yes, I would like to discuss the application of ZOPE to Law Office information handling in general and to the related topic of the move to an XML based Electronic Court Record in particular. Please contact me directly instead of via the mail list. For the non-attorney members, the legal community is at the very early stage of discussing why and how we can/should move from treating information as a stack of paper documents inches or feet thick to an XML based Electronic Court Record, where documents serve as the medium for exchanging information with a common database. This is were Zope comes in. The study of Zope looks to me to be the best way to learn how to transform information handling and workflow in the legal community from the paper-stack database into an electronic database. For, if the courts are going to serve as repositories of common information, and accept input via documents marked up in XML, then law offices will have to mirror the change. Second thought, If you agree with me that Zope, probably plus a relational data base, is a better way to handle information then a stack of paper in a file cabinet, or a set of word processing documents in a computer's file system, you may want to show Zope to the attorneys at your company and win them over? Just a thought. Sincerely, Brian Hickman Attorney at Law

Getting value from a form field
by Bart Holthuijsen 16 May '00

Hi fellow Zopiasts! I'm having a problem with getting the value from a Form field. Here's some code: FORM ACTION=convuplmethod METHOD="POST" ENCTYPE="multipart/form-data"> <TABLE CELLSPACING="2"> <TR> <TH ALIGN="LEFT" VALIGN="TOP"><EM><STRONG>XML File</STRONG></EM></TD> <TD ALIGN="LEFT" VALIGN="TOP"> <INPUT TYPE="file" NAME="filenaamXML:string" SIZE="25"> </TD> </TR> <TR><TH></TH> <TD> <INPUT TYPE="SUBMIT" VALUE="Proceed"> <INPUT TYPE="reset" VALUE="Reset"> </TD> </TR> </FORM> now how do I get the value that is filled in in the field? In my convuplmethod method I have: <dtml-var "REQUEST.form['filenaamXML']"> But this returns the contents of the file, and all I want is the path. Thanks in advance, Bart Holthuijsen. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Check out http://www.reportlab.com/ I'm using this stuff to create PDF files of invoices and delivery dockets and send them out by email. I've also created a formatting language that allows me to create either PDFs or send directly to a PCL5-speaking laser printer. Connect Problem with DCOracle on Win32
by Norbert.Klamann＠DENOTES.HENKEL.DE 16 May '00

16 May '00

Hello all, i managed to compile DCOracle for Win32 and I am able to connect to some Oracle 7.x databases around here. When I try to connect to a local 8I database : ## my program import DCOracle.ocidb import os #os.environ['ORACLE_HOME']='E:\\Oracle8i' #os.environ['TNS_ADMIN']='E:\\Oracle8i\\Network\\Admin' #os.environ['ORACLE_SID']='Test' os.system("set") co = DCOracle.Connect("scott/tiger(a)WS21375.xxxxx") I get the following traceback Traceback (innermost last): File "F:\DCOracle\Tests\Connect.py", line 7, in ? co = DCOracle.Connect("scott/tiger") File "F:\Python\DCOracle\ocidb.py", line 69, in __init__ self.__dict__['_d']=oci_.Connect(connection_string) OracleError: (12203, 'ORA-12203: TNS:Verbindung zum Ziel nicht m\366glich.\012') ORA-12203 is TNS:unable to connect to destination I don't believe that this is really a TNS-problem because one of the precompiler samples supplied with oracle works just fine from the sam command prompt. In the sourcecode ocidb.py is a hint that there should be another login format for oracle 8, but the module oci_8 mentioned there does not exist. ### from ocidb.py : class ocidb: "Oracle Database Connections" if oci_8 is None: def __init__(self, connection_string): "Open a database connection" self.__dict__['_d']=oci_.Connect(connection_string) else: def __init__(self, connection_string): "Open a database connection" # Waaa, O8 wants a different format. Waaa up, s = (split(connection_string, '@')+[''])[:2] u, p = (split(up, '/')+[''])[:2] sc=oci_8.Logon(u,p,s) self.__dict__['_d']=sc.lda() Has anyone managed to get this going ?? Many thanks for any hints Norbert Klamann

References and Consulting
by cs＠comlounge.net 16 May '00

16 May '00

Hi there! I have a question ;-) We're thinking of using Zope for a rather big project and because of that I wanted to ask if there are some references where Zope is used in a bigger environment. Also I would be interested in which companies in Germany are doing consulting for Zope and the like. We need this to have some arguments against other technologies. Are there maybe any benchmarks between Zope and Websphere or similar servers? Thanks for your answers! :) -- christian
