Memory usage
by R. David Murray 11 May '00

OK, I'm still confused about Zope memory usage. On a FreeBSD3.4 system, I have a database with (Zope says) 234999 objects in it. Over time it has grown to a 90MB resident set and 172MB size, according to top. This is causing the machine to swap. So I went into database management. Parameters are the default (400/60). It said there were some 6000 odd objects among all the caches. So I did a minimize to six seconds. That gave me 144 objects in cache. It did not change either the size *or the resident set*. In fact the resident set is now 92MB. When I first start Zope, the resident set is about 60MB, and seems to stay there for a while. I've got more memory on order, but something seems a little odd here to me. --RDM

Test Survey
by Jim Washington 11 May '00

Zopistas: At the risk of slashdotting my machine, I am asking for a bit of help. We will go live with a survey using my QSurvey product in a couple of weeks, and I would like to do a test that is not "for grade." BTW, there is an updated version of QSurvey today at http://www.zope.org/Members/jwashin/Survey So, if you have a minute or two, would you please point your browser to: http://vpave5.ed.vt.edu/www/testsurvey/. I have been reading the latest security stuff, and I promise, no Trojans... E-mail me quickly if you think I should ask additional questions. I will be happy to add a couple and return the statistics if anybody wants. But this is just a test to see how the product might handle additional outside traffic. Note for archives readers: I plan to take this down in a day or so; but if it loads, it is still up. Thanks. -- Jim Washington Center for Assessment, Evaluation and Educational Programming Department of Teaching and Learning, Virginia Tech

userLDAP authentication?
by julio dinis 11 May '00

11 May '00

Hi zopers! I'm using ZopeLDAP1.0b2. I've tested it sucessufully with openldap and mssiteserverldap. I can do some filters really cool way. But now I want to authenticate users. Thats my problem. I've turned off anonymous access to my site and created a userLDAP folder with no prob, it lists my users. But when I go into netscape and enter the user+password in the auth window, I cant get users to authenticate, the same for cookies authentication. My users in ldap have an attribute roles = Manager, is that enough? I dont have nothing in the uid bind field, and I wonder if its necessary to put a manager there in order to be able to authenticate + being able to do querys(filters) what I already do. Any more documents, list, site where I can dig is apreciated info. Thanx. Totally new user help request
by Emory Baird 11 May '00

11 May '00

Hi, I'm new not only to zope but Linux in general. I thought that by trying to install and run a content management system on Linux would be a good way to learn... I've managed to install zope, as root, and I've even installed ZAP but I can't seem to access the /manage URL. >From ZAP I did ./startzap and it said that Apache was started successfully. I can serve web pages with Apache successfully. I'm running Redhat 6.1 (Cartman) I have read as much documentation as I could find about installation etc. but I saw now mention of this particular problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated, including advice to the effect that I've been overly ambitious :) Emory

Any product that has memory leaks will probably not be able to be reloaded correctly. New DTML tags might not take either. But products that basically just subclass Folder or SimpleItem have a good chance of reloading without major problems. > > Would a > > product that implements an imperfect "reload" function interest the > > Zope community? But if used for development only, it would speed things up a bit. I will ponder more. Shane

Zmethod import folder
by Chris Beaumont 11 May '00

11 May '00

Hi, I'm trying to import an external Zmethod for the first time into my Zope installation, and I think I've got something wrong. I created the "import" folder at what I see as the root of my Zope installation. Perhaps I might have placed it in the wrong place? The import directory is currently at the same level as the Zserver, bin, doc inst, lib and pcgi folders.. When I try to import the files, Zope returns a IOError, "[Errno 21] is a directory". If anyone sees an obvious error, please fill me in. Thank you.. Chris

In this case, you set SiteRootBASE and SiteRootPATH in the access method, and leave them blank in the siteRoot itself- it picks up the values from REQUEST. -- ethan mindlace fremen mindlace(a)imeme.net zope -&- imap email -&- mailing list weave your web with the web at http://imeme.net

newbie Cookies vs something
by Coleman, Bryan 11 May '00

11 May '00

Ok this is not really a zope issue persay but I am having difficulty with persistent data. I want to be able to use variable across pages but it seems like the only way I can do that is to use forms. But of course the variable dissipates after it is used. How can I keep persistent data. I have never used cookies and can't see how to integrate the cookie back into zope even if I do use it. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. - Bryan

Soft References in DTML
by John Morton 11 May '00

11 May '00

I'm constantly running into this general problem in DTML - how do I access an object or property who's name is given in a string? Here's a specific problem: I've got a Zclass product that has a string property in a sheet that's supposed to hold the name of the prefered cascading style sheet used when rendering the object. The name is automatically added to the header of the html doc when rendered, like this: <link href="<dtml-var style_sheet>" ...> But the style sheet itself lives a few directories down from the document being rendered so I really want the absolute URL. If I could act the object I could do <dtml-var "css_object.absolute_url()"> - but the name css_object (or whatever) is the value of the string style_sheet. So how can I dereference the string? Thank, John
