Catalog memory usage issues

So the Status tab talks about Catalog using less memory if the word count on the subtransactions is set lower. I tried setting it to 500, and my Zope grew to 204M, which is exactly the same size it grew to when words was set to 10000. (Don't ask me why it was set that high...). What is going on here? It's making my system swap itself to death, so it takes forever for the 'update catalog' to complete, and then I have to restart Zope afterwards to bring performance back to normal. This is Zope 2.1.4 on FreeBSD 3.4-stable. --RDM

The answer is very simple: get "Learning Python" by Mark Lutz & David Ascher, ISBN 1-56592-464-9 Don't waste money on any other Python book. (I have 4 books on Python, and flipped through another two.) When you feel strong enough, then you may want to explorer more specific topics in Python, you can then buy more books. Inter version problems & ZCatalog problems (long)

I just tried to develop a small system for publishing informations. It has the following structure: KnowledgeBase folder .... kMessage .... kMessage .... kSearchFolder ......kMessage .... Folder ......kMessage etc. Source is available at http://sorry.vse.cz/~xpalo03/kbase.tar.gz I have following problems: Adding kMessage into KnowledgeBase structures doesn't work in 2.1.6 version, but works in 2.1.4 version. I always get Permission denied on manage_editProperties. I use following code to found a root folder: <dtml-in PARENTS skip_unauthorized=1> <dtml-if "meta_type=='KnowledgeBase'"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('kBaseId',id)"> </dtml-if> </dtml-in> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('kBaseObj',_.getattr(_.this,kBaseId))"> This suffers from one problem, when thare is a Folder with same name of the 'root' folder, but I didn't find another way to do it (any suggestions?) This sets the 'kBaseObj' to the topmost 'KnowledgeBase' Folder. This code is in constructor of kmessage: <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('kSequence',kSequence+1)"> <dtml-call "kBaseObj.propertysheets.Seqopt.manage_editProperties(REQUEST)"> It doesn't work in 2.1.6 from factory, but works when called from a DTML method elsewhere. In 2.1.4. it's ok both in factory & method. Another problem is with catalog. I wanted to be able to search in Subtrees, but didn't find any way how to limit ZCatalog in respect to the 'path'. I created a ZClass inherited from ZCatalog and I let this thing being called from a kMessage constructor: <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('myUrl',this().url())"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('myObj',this())"> <dtml-in PARENTS> <dtml-if "meta_type=='KnowledgeBase' or meta_type=='kSearchFolder'"> <dtml-try> <dtml-call "uncatalog_object(myUrl)"> <dtml-except> </dtml-try> <dtml-call "catalog_object(myObj,myUrl)"> </dtml-if> </dtml-in> This should register this message in all ZCatalog-inherited classes upwards. It gets, but in the classes higher then the one the Catalogs gets updated somewhat badly. Suppose this structure: kbase (KnowledgeBase) ..folder (kSearchFolder) ....mesg1 ....mesg2 Now searching for Title in 'folder' is ok, but from 'kbase' I get no result for 'mesg1' and line corresponding to mesg1 for Title='mesg2', for other messages it's all this way moved. Published Modules w/FastCGI??

Hi - I'm trying to access a published module using FastCGI, and am having some problems. Following Amos' How-to ("How to Publish Your Own Python Modules"), I created a simple Hello module and published it by altering z2.py: #zh = zhttp_handler(MODULE, '', HTTP_ENV) #hs.install_handler(zh) sys.path.insert(0, '/path/to/my/module') # I used a real path here my_handler = zhttp_handler('Hello', '') hs.install_handler(my_handler) I can then start Zope (ZServer, really) and access my module (which contains a "sayHello" function) like so: http://localhost:8080/sayHello No problems so far. Following the appropriate documentation, I installed the latest fastcgi snap release, and configured Zope to respond via FastCGI. I was then able to start Zope normally (using the original z2.py) and access the normal Zope content from Apache via FastCGI. No problem. I then started my modified z2 (z2Hello.py - altered to respond to FastCGI). Again, when I hit it with the URL above, I can access my publised Hello module without a hitch. However, when I attempt to access my hello module using FastCGI, I get.... Zope! http://localhost:8080/sayHello ----> my Hello module http://localhost/z ----> The Zope welcome screen http://localhost/z/sayHello ----> A Zope 'not found' error My understanding was that I hadn't published the Zope module in z2Hello.py, but up it comes anyway when FastCGI is involved. So... My question is: How do I publish modules in Zope (w/o creating a full Zope product) and access those modules via FastCGI? Thanks! miles

Using Zope on a third-party web host

newbie question about input box for sql method

Hi all, I've followed the Z SQL Method instructions and built a simple interface to a database. I have an input form with four text-input boxes. The values entered into the four input boxes get INSERTed as a database record when the submit button is clicked. I want to change one of those text-input boxes into a selection box -- limiting the user to a dozen or so predefined values (which would be selectable from a menu that appears on the box when you click on it). From the way the Z SQL Method is used in zope, it almost looks like i might have to go into it (SQL.py) and set things up the way I want. Is this right? Is there a better solution?
