PTK Installation wows
by Chris Herrnberger 09 May '00

Greetings all; Been experimenting with Zope and several products. You know the standard nubi tools. wp, squishot confera etc.Tried PTK. Followed the instructions carefully but cant seem to get a proper installation of PTK. The package was untarred in the correct directory, the import dir created in the root of the server and the products installed all correctly. Importing demo went smooth. Restarted server as instructed. (twice) When I now add an object Portal to a folder the wizard always completes the installation with the error: Achtung, you are access the portal form the outside....yadayaya..I have checked and re-installed three times now and the same error occurs upon completion of the wizard each time, resulting in several erros when I acess site functions which is normal under these circumstances. Running latest version of Zope from source not rpm on SuSE 6.4 Any insights would be greatly appreciated. This is a great product people, even for us non-wizards at the command line..) Chris

Zope and Apache Virtual Host HELP..!!
by Stuart Foster 09 May '00

I have developed a site using zope and am now ready to have my domain name point to the zope site. I did not use the root folder in zope for this site it is in it's own sub folder. What I want is when a user types in mysite.com to go to the site I developed in Zope. I am using the Zope 2.1.6 RPM and the Zope-pcgi 2.1.6 rpm. I need this to go through Apache because there are other sites running on the server. Here is the Virtual host record out of the vhost.conf file <VirtualHost 207.199.217.70> ServerName mysite.com ServerAlias *.mysite.com TransferLog /home/mysite/transferlog ErrorLog /home/mysite/errorlog ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ /home/httpd/cgi-bin/zope/ RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} ^(.*) RewriteRule ^/mysite(.*) /home/httpd/cgi-bin/zope/Zope.cgi/mysite$1 [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} ^(.*) RewriteRule ^(.*) /home/httpd/cgi-bin/zope/Zope.cgi/mysite$1 [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] </VirtualHost> What happens now is if I go to www.mysite.com/mysite I get the Zope manager interface. If I go to www.mysite.com I get Apache's default page. What am I missing...? All I need is for the user to type www.mysite.com and get it? Any help would be much appreciated.. Thanks Stuart

<znewb010> agitprop = How to find 'find' ??? </znewb010>

Ok its hot here in the city today ...and I am going @#$%@ nuts trying to find specific help on various topics in zope. I know the advice exists "_.{'("['some.where']")'}" in all the great mesasges and howtos and tips whcih have accrued over the past couple years. Q1: Why oh why oh why oh why when you go to Zope http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Tips does it only display the first 32 characters of the How-to desciption? This is not 1980! People have taken the trouble to write a descriptive title and you can't even read it in full .. what is the sense in that? Q2: Why is it not possible to see the whole thing as one scrollable list? Why is not possible to group these at least superficially by catgory? Q3: Why is there no infoseek-like search engine which allows an intial search, and then search within again to narrow things down. I find typically this mechanism is by far the most effective way to egt to the information one wants in the fastest possible time. For example search for 'External'. Then search within for 'python', then search agin within those results for 'import' etc... Why please can someone explain to me why this is so hard to do? I thought that infoseek's engine was written in Python or a big chunk of it.. Q4: Why not show off Zope by having a nice Zope search interface to searching itself? The new Nip is an improvement on things but still very hard to sift through the results. Q5: Why for @$%@'s sake is there no organization, structure or search for Zope prodcuts at http://www.zope.org/Products ? For example 'Member Contributed Products' appear to be listed neither by name nor topic nor author nor date... what's with that. The zen of searching zope appears to be 'when you find it you will know'.. How hard is it to put some useful structure on this? How many newbie email posts would be saved by an accessible presentation? If Zope is so powerful why can't it be configured to show it's own stuff more clearly. Q6: Am I the only one who finds all this very strange? I love the 'idea' of zope and really want to learn to use it as a basis for many projects, but am finding I am being driven towards researching other solutions, simply because I cannot afford the time, [dealy/expense] and frustration of constantly seeking some valid examples quickly of the syntax. As an interim I turning to learn to use Python Methods and External Methods as a better solution, since at least that way it is easier to develop and read. In know Zope is free and I cannot complain. But imho there is a serious obstacle to its broader growth which is the learning curve. My impression is that a major obstacle to willing newbies is simply decent access to the archives via some smart zope-based search tools. I draw 3 conclusions: 1. I am simply too dumb and too lazy to trawl though gadzillion threads to find my info 2. Zope has some serious problems and cannot really do what needs to be done in terms of dynamic search and presentation 3. Digital Creations are too busy/tired etc to put time in for free to get the web site advanced like this 4. No-one has really applied themselves to the problem. Those who know don't need it and the rest struggle along Wht do you think ? - Jason ________________________________________________________________ Jason CUNLIFFE = NOMADICS.(Interactive Art and Technology).Design Director

Creating my first product
by Nolan Darilek 09 May '00

So I've finally managed to work out my menu issues, and I'm already trying to cause more trouble. :) I'm trying to implement a journal/rants page. I've done something like this on another site, so I copied my code and worked from what I did manage to accomplish. I'm using the dtml-calendar tag to search through a Z Catalog and locate objects with a date_entry property which equals the current cell's date. The calendar renders nicely, and AFAIK everything should work. The problem though is that I couldn't accomplish what I wanted to with a DTML document, so I created my own Journal Entry product which incorporates some of the changes which I'd like. But, I'm a bit confused about properties and their indexability. I'm creating the product completely in DTML, and am curious; how do I define a property? I see how I can define a propertysheet and attach properties to that, but is it somehow possible to define properties directly on the object? Or do all objects use propertysheets transparently? And, if I add a property to an object, how do I index it in a Z catalog? I added a 'basic' propertysheet and then placed an entry_date property of type date within that, but I didn't have much luck with that, even after adding the entry_date to the meta_types of the Z catalog; I was never able to receive any search results. Should I use 'basic.entry_date' instead of just 'entry_date' in searches? Thanks.

DTML Tree question...
by Antonio Schifano 08 May '00

08 May '00

Hi all, I would like to use dtml-tree for representing the data stored in a database table, which inherently has a tree hierarchy. Just to be clear, imagine a table in which each row has a 'pointer' to the father row, like in the following example: ID | FATHER | Rest-of-data -----+----------+---------------- 0 | - | ... -----+----------+---------------- 1 | 0 | ... -----+----------+---------------- 2 | 0 | ... -----+----------+---------------- 3 | 1 | ... -----+----------+---------------- and so on... Unfortunately I haven't figured out (yet!) the wizardries needed to make this work. Any suggestions/pointers? Thank you! Antonio Schifano

determining if there is a file to be uploaded
by Ingo Assenmacher 08 May '00

08 May '00

Hi! I have a form with a file-input tag. Now, how do I determine if there is actually a file upload done? (I tried to read the file size with <dtml-if "_.len(file.read())"> there is data <dtml-else> there is no data </dtml-if> But this does not work (always 0). Ok, how is this to be done? Regards, Ingo.
