streaming (video/audio)
by Hung Jung Lu 08 May '00

Hi, Are there any open-source streaming technology available for Python/C++? (I know this is a far-fetched question. But I would imagine people are getting there.) What about real-time voice/image captioning? Anything open-source? I was told Real.com's client side has open API/SDK type of stuff, but I would guess the server side is probably not free. regards, Hung Jung ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Strange Infinite Recursions
by Chris Withers 08 May '00

08 May '00

If I create a DTML method called 'method' containing only: <dtml-if 'method'> There is always true </dtml-if> I get: Error Type: SystemError Error Value: infinite recursion in document template Surely it should just always be true and so should evaluate as such without infinitely recursing? ZServer V Appacie

#1 I am using the Zope rpm and the ZServer rpm. Up to this point I have been testing and developing my site. I am now ready to open it up to my .com address. However I am a bit confused and was wondering if anyone could help me. >From what I have read I need to remove the Zserver package and install the Zope-pcgi package and then modify the httpd.conf. However this particular server has some other sites on it and I don't want to affect them. This is what I have found that needs to be changed in the httpd.conf RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^/static/(.*) /home/httpd/html/$1 [l] RewriteRule ^/cgi-bin/(.*) /home/httpd/cgi-bin/$1 [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} ^(.*) RewriteRule ^/(.*) /home/httpd/cgi-bin/Zope/$1 [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] is it that simple and if I do this will it affect the other virtual sites? #2 I also noticed that the Zope.rpm is running as "zope" should it be "nobody"? Re: [Zope] MySQL - PostgreSQL - ZODB
by J. Atwood 08 May '00

I have had way too many bad experiences with MS SQL 7.0. Here are just a few. 1) It is a pig. It wants at "LEAST" 128 MB for itself (NT wants another 128) 2) It is not stable. Ask most NT network admins and they will admit to having a 'AT' command to reboot every night. 3) It is proprietary and subject to too many bugs/security holes. If IIS, ASP, Office and Outlook have taught us anything it is that security is not number one on the list of priorities for Microsoft. Can you say "ILOVEYOU?" Here is why I like PostgreSQL 1) It is stable. It goes up and stays up. Period. 2) It is Open Source. Many eyes means less bugs and less security holes. 3) It is easy. It comes installed on RH 6+ and is ready to go. Many more but I am probably opening this up to a huge debate that I do not want to. In the end, use the tool that you are comfortable using and fits within your overall plan. J > From: Richard Moon <richard(a)dcs.co.uk> > Date: Mon, 08 May 2000 14:36:31 +0100 > To: "J. ZCatalog, ZClass
by Markus Hochreiter 08 May '00

Hi, I have a problem with the zCatalog! I have created a APerson product with a ZClass (CatalogAware as base Class). Below are the Form and the Methode to insert a Instance procrammatically. After adding a Aperson, I get no result when I'm searching(with a normal ZSearch Interface) in the Catalog! So my question: Is there anything wrong in my methods, or is this a problem from zope, or are there parameters in zope which I have to set up? thanks for your help mex Form: <H2>Add APerson</H2> <form action="adressbuch_add_processor"> <table> <tr><th>Vorname</th> <td><input type=text name=name></td> </tr><tr><th>Nachname</th> <td><input type=text name=nname></td> </tr><tr><th>Email</th> <td><input type=text name=email></td> </tr><tr><th>TelephonNr</th> <td><input type=text name=phone></td> </tr><tr><td></td><td><input type=submit value=" Add "></td></tr> </table></form> Add methode: <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('name',name)"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('nname',nname)"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('email',email)"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('phone',phone)"> <dtml-with "manage_addProduct['APerson']"> <dtml-call "APerson_add(_.None, _, NoRedir=1)"> </dtml-with> Thanks! APerson_add Methode: <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('ts', ZopeTime())"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('id', _.str(_.int(ts)))"> <dtml-with "APerson.createInObjectManager(REQUEST['id'], REQUEST)"> <dtml-call "propertysheets.Properties.manage_editProperties(REQUEST)"> <dtml-call reindex_object> </dtml-with> <dtml-if NoRedir> <dtml-else> <dtml-if DestinationURL> <dtml-call "RESPONSE.redirect(DestinationURL+'/manage_workspace')"> <dtml-else> <dtml-call "RESPONSE.redirect(URL2+'/manage_workspace')"> </dtml-if> </dtml-if>

Freelance Programmers?
by Brendon Grunewald 08 May '00

Dear Zopers, Does a freelance / "Sourcexchange(tm)" type thing exist that caters best for Zope / Python programmers? What is the best place to find programmers for specific (feature / module) as well as less specific tasks (like Webmaster)? Re: [Zope] Interbase DB

Interbase 6.0 will be open source for all platforms according to the open source Q&A at interbase.com : http://www.interbase.com/open/community/opensource_qa.html. The current version (5.6) is still commercial however. The 6.0 version comes with a user defined function library which includes date functions (I had the same problem when I started to use Interbase - found a UDF library, from Canada I think - NT only however) It also now has an Extract operator to work with the datetime datatype. I've been using Interbase since version 4.0 (about four years). I have it in use with up to 35 users simultaneously. I don't know how well it would scale to very large systems. I also would like to see an Interbase DA for Zope. I'm not enough of a Python programmer yet to do it myself, but I might have to bite the bullet and try. Can I ask why the interest in Interbase over, say, PostgreSQL I've been using Interbase on NT for a few years now. It's stable, zero maintenance, hard-to-kill and has decent features like triggers, stored procedures etc. The one thing that lets it down is the built-in functions - you really need to get a User Defined Functions (UDF) library from day 0 and install it to do any sort of date manipulation for instance. My problem with this is that it makes your DB code hard to port between platforms - that UDF lib you use on NT won't work on Linux - esp. since UDF libs are often written in Delphi and thus tied to Win32 (at least until Kylix is released). I also notice that Interbase don't seem to offer a free version to NT users - that's because they have so many NT customers who already bought licences who will want refunds! One final notice is that Interbase only became Open Source after its key members of its development team walked out in protest over the way that the parent company was pushing (or not) the product. How can Interbase.com turn this crisis into an opportunity?
