malformed Acess rule breaks zope
by ethan mindlace fremen 21 Feb '00

21 Feb '00

zopistas I was trying to rewrite the access rule, as per evan's suggestion. I was asking for a slice that wasn't there. Nothing would then come up: any page I tried to go to told me that I had an index error. it wouldn't acknowledge my change that should have fixed it. So i went in with __no_before_traverse__ which worked (whew). Then i tried to edit the method. No dice. Deleting it, however, did work. Just thought I'd mention it, I dunno why it wouldn't fix. ~ethan

medusa and RESPONSE.redirects
by Dr. Ross Lazarus 21 Feb '00

21 Feb '00

I guess like me, many people are using methods which are "terminated" logically with a call to RESPONSE.redirect - this is what the prototype ZClass add function does for example. I never thought about it before, but checking some debug.log output, I found complaints about requests not ending which I immediately recognised as being methods which use redirects to avoid the "saved, click here to continue" type of unpleasant user experience..... Does zope's server mind the fact that potentially large numbers of transactions of this type (which appear not to end) might accumulate under load ? Might this induce any instability or resource leakage ?

Re: [Zope] Installation help
by Michael Hamilton 21 Feb '00

If you're just starting out this might be a simpler way to go: How-To: Using Apache with ZServer (NOT Zope.cgi) http://www.zope.org/Members/anser/apache_zserver Here's the introductory paragraph: "The existing How-To's for combining Zope with the popular Apache server mostly require you to use the CGI interface to Zope, instead of the much faster, multithreaded ZServer. This incurs a big penalty in startup overhead for each run of the CGI, and it forces single threading of the Zope database." Storing images in a database (sybase)
by jiva＠devware.com 21 Feb '00

Can anyone point me to a howto or just give me some info on how I can display (from zope) images (like .gif's etc) that are stored in a database (sybase)? Thanks! -- If you sit down at a poker game and don't see a sucker, get up. You're the sucker.

Now I know there are > "mySelection:list", "myMethod:method", "myVar:int", etc. > These kinds of little tiny patches makes JavaScript > look like Perl. :) This isn't javascript, this is all Zope. What Loren was explaining was a qualifier for ZPublisher's type marshaling mechanism. For example, in a form you can have: <input name="bob:int"> And ZPublisher will marshal the value from this input into a python integer (if it can, if it can't, it raises an error). 'method' is another qualifier that can be used, and it's a bit magical. Suppose you had a Folder called 'foo' with three DTML Methods in them called 'A', 'B', and 'C'. In an HTML form you could have the following code: <form action="URLtoFolder" method="POST"> <input type="submit" name="A:method" value="This will call A"> <input type="submit" name="B:method" value="This will call B"> <input type="submit" name="C:method" value="This will call C"> </form> Pressing a different button each time will call a different method. This is also quite a bit more graceful and flexible than a bunch of <dtml-if> statements to determine which button was pressed. -Michel

I'm trying to use the sybase 2.0b2 db connector with sybase 11.9.2 and though it builds okay, when I go to zope, it shows up as a broken project with the following dump: Traceback (innermost last): File "/usr/local/Zope-2.0.1-src/lib/python/OFS/Application.py", line 393, in import_products product=__import__(pname, global_dict, global_dict, silly) File "/usr/local/Zope-2.0.1-src/lib/python/Products/SybaseDAv2/__init__.py", line 90, in ? import DA File "/usr/local/Zope-2.0.1-src/lib/python/Products/SybaseDAv2/DA.py", line 91, in ? from db import DB File "/usr/local/Zope-2.0.1-src/lib/python/Products/SybaseDAv2/db.py", line 87, in ? import sy_occ, string, DateTime ImportError: No module named sy_occ What's wrong? -- The end move in politics is always to pick up a gun. -- Buckminster Fuller

How safe is "view management screens"?
by Lalo Martins 21 Feb '00

21 Feb '00

Since one of my sites doesn't use any password-protected database connection, or anything else that I can't let my users see, and since the site is primarily directed at the Free Software community, I'm considering a way of allowing users to view all my source code. Just adding a ``view source'' method may not cut it, because cross-method calls would obscure a lot of the thing. I was thinking that perhaps the most easy and powerful way would be giving ``View management screens'' to Anonymous. Assuming I don't give them any add/change/delete permissions, that should be safe enought, no? Or am I missing something? (If I can do that, it would be also very cool because I'd be showing off what Zope can do. Of course I'd have to make the Products I use available for download somewhere else, but that's a given anyway.) []s, |alo +---- -- I am Lalo of deB-org. You will be freed. My observation is that when variables are passed in the URL they aee typed as strings, and thus you end up with (effectively): entryid="0" which most certainly isn't false. Try this: <dtml-if "_.int(entryid)"> -- J C Lawrence Home: claw(a)kanga.nu ----------(*) Other: coder(a)kanga.nu --=| A man is as sane as he is dangerous to his environment |=--

Re: data.fs corruption

I hope you dont mind, but im cc'ing the list-- ppl need to see this one of the scariest things i can imagine is a customer calling up saying the entire *monolithic* database is corrupt. the entire workday would grind to a halt and someone would have to jump through lots of hoops to just get the database (zope filesystem) back in order :(((( this is unacceptable (period) for some of the uses i had in store for Zope. is zope going to support multiple databases? jim f. said the ZODB is a SPOF -- are there any plans on fixing this? is there anyway to 'block all writes' while backing up the ZODB? w/o taking the entire website down/mostly reads anyways? is there a way you can 'scan' to see if the ZODB is intact? i.e. having a process scan the ZODB and return whether or not it is valid? what was the 'offending' transaction? thanks ~alan ----- Original Message ----- From: "M.
