Python class
by Sin Hang Kin 20 Feb '00

I intend to define a term class as a python product in zope, here is the python code : class term: def __init__(self, term, members=[]): self.term = term self.members = members def addMember(self, terms*): for t in terms: self.members.append(t) def listMembers(self): return self.members I do not know how to implement the addMember in Zope: I intend to have this : the user have a drop-down selection to select the term to add members to. And a list of all terms in the current folder is below with check box to let the user to choose (if the form can set the checkbox with the ismember relation is better). How can I do that? FW: getPreviousSibling
by RC Compaan 20 Feb '00

I still haven't found a solution for the following problem. Help would be greatly appreciated: -----Original Message----- From: RC Compaan [mailto:roche@up-front.co.za] Sent: 17 February 2000 01:57 To: Zope Subject: getPreviousSibling I have a list of folders containing thumbnail images. In each folder I make a link to the previous and next folder with "getPreviousSibling" and "getNextSibling". This works perfectly in all folders except for the first one. This is my code: <dtml-if getPreviousSibling> <dtml-with getPreviousSibling> <a href="<dtml-var absolute_url>"><< <dtml-var title_or_id></a> </dtml-with> </dtml-if> And Zope says: Error Type: SystemError Error Value: infinite recursion in document template My logic says <dtml-if getPreviousSibling> should return "none" for the first folder like <dtml-if getNextSibling> returns none for the last folder in the list. What could it be? roché

A minor Zope heresy <grin>
by R. David Murray 20 Feb '00

I just figured out that I can get to the management screens by using [...]/manage_workspace instead of [....]/manage. This makes me happy. So far it has worked pretty well, although there have been minor oddities like a javascript error and a place where a new window popped up instead of the page just changing when I clicked on a management tab. But I like it much better than the standard 'manage' view, because there isn't that wasted screen space on the left with that useless (to me!) folder view. (The 'folder' view would be more useful if it could also list folder contents, but even then I don't think I'd find it all that useful.) Anyway, this note is just kind of an FYI on different usage styles, for folks to think about when doing new development. I certainly like the fact that Zope is flexible enough to allow me to play with the management interface like this, and I hope it stays that way! --RDM

Debug print?
by Hung Jung Lu 20 Feb '00

20 Feb '00

Hi, A trick I have found useful is to implement an external method called dprint. I print things into a string variable inside the REQUEST variable. This makes debugging easier, especially when you have looping conditions. <dtml-call "dprint(myvar)"> And then, in the stardard_footer_html or something like that, I print out the string (which may have many lines) and also the REQUEST variable and SESSION variables. There is a flag that I can set, so in the production copy the debug print is suppressed. This is kind of useful. But as always, there is probably already something done by someone else. So the question is: Does Zope already come with some debugging feature like this? Or has anyone done some something like this? I guess it'll be good for Zope to come with some elementary debugging features. A simple print statement already helps a lot. Is there such a thing already? regards, Hung Jung ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

I create a dtml method called ' readme' inside the folder. Notice the initial blank in the name. This way, the ' readme' file always appears as the first item inside the folder. :) Hung Jung ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Comments? Zope thinking...
by jiva＠devware.com 20 Feb '00

Here's a question: When coding with a language, say, raw python or something, typically, you'll put comments in the code to explain what various methods do. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this in Zope other than to put comments directly in the dtml code itself. Wouldn't it be beneficial to say, have a "Comments" tab or property or something that would display right in the folder browse of the zope interface? -- The more data I punch in this card, the lighter it becomes, and the lower the mailing cost. -- S. Installation help
by Lucas Vogel 20 Feb '00

20 Feb '00

Hello, I am trying to install Zope on my machine(SuSE 6.3, apache 1.3.9) with FastCGI and am having a very tough time. The first time I tried it was with the RPM's, but I couldn't really figure out what was going on with those so I uninstalled them, thinking that if I tried the installation from the source I would have a better understanding of Zope configuration and be able to install it the 'right' way. So now I'm about halfway through the installation, trying to set up Zope to use Apache and fastcgi, and I think I'm stuck. Fastcgi has been set up and is running(the 10/06 snapshot as required), and I am to the point in the WEBSERVER.TXT file where I choose whether I have Apache or ZServer handle the requests(?). I have all of my Zope source in a /usr/src directory since I've been putting it together, and am looking at what my next step would be. If anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction I would be very grateful. Thank you -- Lucas Vogel lucas7(a)home.com ICQ: 44697169

Re: [Zope] Syntax: Learning from JSP's problems

We could perhaps hack the var tag to pass along any non-standard attributes as keyword arguments: <dtml-var myMethod foo="bar"> # inject foo="bar" into myMethod's namespace Of course, then we have to escape the standard attributes used by the var tag itself, or else decorate all the "keyword" attributes: <dtml-var myMethod dtml:foo="bar"> Such a syntax would remove most of the need for the expr="" stuff, which requires that unintuitive '( _.None, _, ...)' bit. It replaces some uses of the let tag, too, although I often have the let active across a whole method. -- ========================================================= Tres Seaver tseaver(a)palladion.com 713-523-6582 Palladion Software http://www.palladion.com

Calculations within a document
by Boris Povazay 19 Feb '00

19 Feb '00

Since I am a "Zope-Beginner" I am currently faced with some problems - maybe you can help me with these. Declarations & type-conversions: How are variable-declerations done right within dtml? Like: float x; or: int x; float y; y=float(x); Calculations: How are iterative calculations with variables done correctly in a dtml-Method? like: float x, x=0; x=x+1 Especially the type-conversion puzzles me. I`ve read several Zope-docs, but I have still not figured out how to do this. Thanks a lot in advance for your reply! -- Boris Povazay

Martijn Pieters wrote : >What do you need load balancing for anyway? Is it for scalability, or >for reliability? I'm glad you asked, I think meny potential Zope users have their own answers, each with situation specifics. Mantra for IT components, "One (of anything) is not enough". For me, reliability is the most critical (as in MISSION CRITICAL) point. Scalability will never become an issue if reliability isn't there first. Why? Because Zope will never be adopted as a production system, without redundancy, failover, etc. >If you want scalability, surely the cost for ZEO can be justified? Not really. There are two price points. A lot, and A lot * 2. I have expressed the need to start ZEO at a two server license, with a corresponding price. Then Zope could get the chance to prove it's worth, grow in percieved value, and to scale as needed. As things are, Zope hopefuls are sitting out because of missing redundancy, failover. That's also why I keep pointing out every possible means of simulating ZEO features on this list, at every opportunity. If one site get's Zope into production using some of these half measures, that's one more potential future ZEO customer. Otherwise, we'll never get far enough to "need" ZEO, in it's current form. >Also, do realize that Zope on a single machine can scale pretty awesome. >We recon ZEO is only necessary for the absolute top range of websites. That's another thing. Zope does great at throughput, but responsiveness isn't always up to expectations, for LAN based IntraNet users. A noticable speed improvment by load balancing across two ZEO servers could go a long way toward making a "full" ZEO license look "justified". Thanks for asking! Jerry S.
