I still haven't found a solution for the following problem. A minor Zope heresy <grin>

I just figured out that I can get to the management screens by using [...]/manage_workspace instead of [....]/manage. This makes me happy. So far it has worked pretty well, although there have been minor oddities like a javascript error and a place where a new window popped up instead of the page just changing when I clicked on a management tab. But I like it much better than the standard 'manage' view, because there isn't that wasted screen space on the left with that useless (to me!) folder view. (The 'folder' view would be more useful if it could also list folder contents, but even then I don't think I'd find it all that useful.) Anyway, this note is just kind of an FYI on different usage styles, for folks to think about when doing new development. I certainly like the fact that Zope is flexible enough to allow me to play with the management interface like this, and I hope it stays that way! --RDM

Debug print?

Hi, A trick I have found useful is to implement an external method called dprint. I print things into a string variable inside the REQUEST variable. This makes debugging easier, especially when you have looping conditions. <dtml-call "dprint(myvar)"> And then, in the stardard_footer_html or something like that, I print out the string (which may have many lines) and also the REQUEST variable and SESSION variables. There is a flag that I can set, so in the production copy the debug print is suppressed. This is kind of useful. But as always, there is probably already something done by someone else. So the question is: Does Zope already come with some debugging feature like this? Or has anyone done some something like this? I guess it'll be good for Zope to come with some elementary debugging features. A simple print statement already helps a lot. I create a dtml method called ' readme' inside the folder. Notice the initial blank in the name. Comments? Zope thinking...

Here's a question: When coding with a language, say, raw python or something, typically, you'll put comments in the code to explain what various methods do. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this in Zope other than to put comments directly in the dtml code itself. Wouldn't it be beneficial to say, have a "Comments" tab or property or something that would display right in the folder browse of the zope interface? -- The more data I punch in this card, the lighter it becomes, and the lower the mailing cost. -- S. Installation help

Hello, I am trying to install Zope on my machine(SuSE 6.3, apache 1.3.9) with FastCGI and am having a very tough time. The first time I tried it was with the RPM's, but I couldn't really figure out what was going on with those so I uninstalled them, thinking that if I tried the installation from the source I would have a better understanding of Zope configuration and be able to install it the 'right' way. So now I'm about halfway through the installation, trying to set up Zope to use Apache and fastcgi, and I think I'm stuck. Fastcgi has been set up and is running(the 10/06 snapshot as required), and I am to the point in the WEBSERVER.TXT file where I choose whether I have Apache or ZServer handle the requests(?). I have all of my Zope source in a /usr/src directory since I've been putting it together, and am looking at what my next step would be. Calculations within a document

Since I am a "Zope-Beginner" I am currently faced with some problems - maybe you can help me with these. Declarations & type-conversions: How are variable-declerations done right within dtml? Like: float x; or: int x; float y; y=float(x); Calculations: How are iterative calculations with variables done correctly in a dtml-Method? like: float x, x=0; x=x+1 Especially the type-conversion puzzles me. I`ve read several Zope-docs, but I have still not figured out how to do this. Thanks a lot in advance for your reply! -- Boris Povazay

Searching ZCatalog

Hi, Is it possible search TextIndex using regexp or something similar? I need to perform query like 'Effect%' that should match ['Effect', 'Effective', 'Effectivly'].. etc (similar to SQL 'LIKE' ). If this feature is not currently implemented, then can anybody give some hints how to do it, eg what classes have to be changed? Lauri
