Now that I'm back from the USA, some random thoughts: 0. It was really great meeting all the people from DC and from the lists. I'm sorry that I didn't have time to to talk to everybody, but I guess there's always the next conference. 1. Some quotes: "Don't write a workflow system in DTML" --Chris Petrelli (we tried it - he's right) "Nobody understands the Zope security system" (this was someone at DC!) "You say that you must have case sensitiveness in programming languages, but the first thing you say when you teach it is *don't use variables with different case names*" --Randy Pausch explaining why Python should be case-insensitive. I'll say this again in case you haven't visited the site yet - http://www.alice.org -- Alice is COOL. 2. Our new programmer's reaction at seeing the Zope T-shirt: "Looks like a Zope Error." How about the next version of the tshirt having the Jabberwocky? "Beware the Renderwob, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The unauthorized Validate!" The printed docs DC gave out also included the Zope Quick Reference, which was nice. 3. For the more advanced, I really recommend reading Phillip Eby's slides (I need to find a Powerpoint viewer for Linux), and Jim Fulton's Algebra of Acquisition and Zope Architecture slides. 4. According to (and thanks to) Michel Pelletier the ZCatalog is going to be having some really cool stuff in the future: partial searching is in CVS now, searching according to the permissions of the searcher should be in soon(?) for the PTK (i.e. Anonymous won't get items in the search results that it doesn't have permission to access.) Later on there's stuff like pluggable Indexes. And from Linuxworld: Right next to DC, also at Tucows, were the MySQL guys. I asked them about transaction support - "I have code for it right here on my notebook. If we like it we'll put it in the next release. You'll have the option of leaving it off if you want for speed, on a database by database basis." -- Itamar S.T. itamars(a)ibm.net

ZCatalog, catalogAware Zclass and Versions

Hi all, I have a Catalog Aware Class that I use to create objects and automatically index them (no shit! I'm a genious :) This specific class creates me a Site Operation/Development problem every time I start a version. This is because if in my version I create some objects of my Class they would be indexed (again my genial brain!), then locking my catalog, i.e, the methods I have for people to create objects will no longer work because my version is locking the catalog. If there is a way/how-to to a version dont do this I would apreciate feedback. Meanwhile... if I discover a good method I'll post on the list. I thought of every time I enter a version I rewrite/change my class (example: a property default_catalog set to "TempCatalog") to avoid the lock of my Current Catalog. But as you can imagine I dont want to do this every time I start a version. Is e-commerce feasible with Zope?

Hi all, I'm a Zope newbie; I working for a little support company that realizes (above all) dynamic Web sites with Apache + PHP; I've already worked with these tools but I feel that PHP is too limited for this complex duty, mostly because I'm accustomed from long time to such a powerful language as Python; thus for my next project I would try to employ Zope+Python instead. The problem is that as with many other commercial project I've a strict deadline to couple with. For this reason I need at least a confirmation that Zope is the right choice for this project; if it is, I've no problem to invest some time to learn how to use it efficiently. Obviously I would be very happy if you will give me some hint on how to proceed also ;-) The site I must realize is a e-commerce site very similar to amazon's one. The products catalog will reside in another site (not handled by us), and from this site when a customer clicks on a product, a script on our site will be called with the product's code as parameters. The script will add the product to a shopping basket; later the customer can proceed to the checkout. Here she/he will be able to create an account on our site for later shopping. What I need is: - A means to implement the basket; with Apache+PHP I would use a simple file containing a list of product codes, or an SQL table. - A means to set a cookie on the client browser and to associate the it with a basket; with Apache+PHP I would use a SQL relation cookie->basket, or I would put in relation the basket filename with the cookie. - A means to store the products database; with Apache+PHP I would use a simple SQL DBMS. - A means to store customer informations on the site; with Apache+PHP I would use another SQL table, with a relation one to many to store the (possibly) many customer's addresses. - I would let the site to be accessed both via https and http. - The site must be easily internationalized, thus I must be able to replace all the text in the pages with a translated version; with Apache+PHP I would use an include file where to store the text messages as PHP constants. How can I implement all this using the "Zope's Zen"? ;-) If you need some other informations I would happy to give them to you. I greatly appreciate any kind of help. Base class in Python

Hi, In Java, all classes are subclasses of the "Object" class. Is there something like that in Python? I find it kind of useful to have some generic class so I can store things into its attributes easily. E.g: a = generic() a.b = 3 a.c ='Hallo' This is nicer than using a dictionary. At this moment I have to define class generic: def __init__(self): pass Not really bothersome, but is there a more straightforward way of doing it? URL Substitution.

Hi fellow Zope hackers. I'm quite a beginner in Zope and probably for some of you my question would be very easy to answer :) I'm looking for a way to embed a foreign (on different URL) document into the results of DTML rendering. For example I want to include LinuxToday headlines on my site and they do provide an HTML with their news headers. All I should do is to actually tell Zope to somehow render URL to this document as it were native document object. I would like to know, if there are any ways to perform such a thing without writing external method that will fetch the file over HTTP and return results. I'm also very curious what kind of development tools people use do develop DTML, 'cause right now I'm fighting with Emacs/PSGML, I've also used HomeSite previously, but Linux is a platform of choice :)) With kind regards, Alexandre.
