Hello all, my Zope Process crashed and I'm not able to start it up again. ZPyGreSQLDA can't find _pg ; community-membership product?

Hiya. Total newbie question here. First time using Zope or Python. I currently have a relatively standard community portal site written in perl with a PostgreSQL datastore that I'm toying with porting over to Zope. It's pretty much (1) users can register and (2) users can post profiles of themselves for others to see. Nothing too fancy, and I was hoping there would be a relatively canned out-of-the-box implementation of such a beast that I could poke at and see how it ticks. So the first thing I did was try to get the postgres DA product working since I knew I would have to use my data in my database, or at least suck it out once. But I'm running into trouble. When I go to the product list in the control panel, ZPyGreSQLDA is described as broken, with the complaint ZPyGreSQLDA Import Traceback File ".../Products/ZPyGreSQLDA/db.py", line 89, in ? import _pg, regex, sys, types ImportError: No module named _pg However, if I just start up the python interpreter and execute "import _pg" it returns without incident. I installed the pygresql RPM and can see _pg.so and pg.sy in the site-packages directory, and even symlinked them up a directory to see if that would help. Any thoughts? I figure I'm just missing something obvious. Second, does anyone have pointers about how to start diving into building a little community site? With an SQL DB in back? I've been going around the documentation for hours and haven't found anything conclusive, plus I'm still pretty hazy on the way it appears zope.org uses zope's built-in user management for membership registration... [Q] More baseclass, subclass, nested class confusion ...

I'm still struggling with through-the-web ZClass definitions. The test problem I am using as an example is the Actor-Participant object model proposed by Phillip Eby (thanks Phillip!). The people at my academic site each have a folderish PersonClass. Academics typically proceed through undergrad, graduate school, postdoc or alumni, etc. So, beneath the PersonClass I have created an ObjectManager-based PositionClass with properties StartDate and EndDate. I want to use this as a base class for further refinements: DegreeClass, PostDocClass, ProfessorClass, SabbaticalClass, ie., PersonProduct - PersonClass (ObjectManager) PersonClassProperties (FirstName, LastName, Email, URL) - PositionClass (ObjectManager) PositionProperties (StartDate, EndDate) - DegreeClass (PositionClass) DegreeProperties (School, Degree) - AlumniClass (PositionClass) AlumniProperties (CurrentEmployment) ... The idea is for individuals to build up a chronology of positions by adding instances of these PositionClass-derived ZClasses to their respective folders. Here PositionClass is meant to be an abstract class. The user should not be able to create an instance of this class but I cannot figure out how to prevent PositionClass from being an "available object" under PersonClass instances. Any help is much appreciated. Darran.

Just a note for anyone planning to use zope / zodbc / oracle 8i with windows 2000... You need to upgrade the oracle odbc drivers to version 8.01.55 to get it to work (the old odbc drivers worked ok with nt/98).

Zope authentication mechanisms takes care of authenticating the user and constructing the user object (of course, you can create your own kind of user objects with Python code). All you as a content manager need to are create Roles that define the various 'groups' of your users, map a collection of permissions to each Role. The actions a user are allowed to do are the union of all the permissions of all their Roles. You can get down and dirty, in Python. You can completely discard Zope's authentication and acquisition mechanisms and just use it's object publishing ORB and some database modules to simulate what Java Servlets give you. Or, is there no difference? There is a difference, and that's when all the research we're doing right now starts to come into the discussion. Whereas we and others have come up with various hackish ways of working with dynamic user schemas and how users look in various system contexts, no generic, reusble mechanism has arisen because the problem is so hard, and I suspect many of the Java platforms punt on a generic reusable mechanism for the same reason. For example, lets say you had a whole Suite of applications. In this environment, you want to maintain an identy accross all applications, possible across multiple remote platforms. Each application may want each user object to look or act completely different. Some applications may consider the information they want to store about the user to be confidential, while other applicaitons may have a lower security barrier and authorization may be necessary for certain applications to allow other applications access to the information they are concerned about in the user. Is there a central LDAPish user repository? Both? Do individual applications keep localized user information? How do users synchronize possibly remote data? How does user managment propegate then to the distributed sources? Does the user or the application control the security between applications? What if two applications define two semantically identical bits of information but uses them in wildly different ways? What if you want to use legacy data (LDAP, RDBM). etc... We've been asking these questions for about a year now, and there's been alot of head scratchin'. What we're conceiving is a generic reusable mechanism which addresses at least a few of these questions. -Michel
