FYI: PTK docs & mockups online
by Paul Everitt 16 Jan '00

Howdy all. The current work-in-progress for the PTK docs are available at: http://www.zope.org/Products/PTK/index.html Notes: o If you have specific comments, please join the PTK mailing list and we'll discuss it there. o I'm still learning DocBook and XSL, so don't complain about the formatting. :^) o The docs are going to get a pretty big change when Mike Pelletier and I sync up tomorrow, as he did a lot at the end of the week. o The docs discuss some things that are anticipated for the PTK but won't be there until some time in February. o We'll be carving out a CVS area for all this stuff next week. Some questions for you folks: o Some of you are doing work that is related, such as Doug Hellmann's Chameleon (and obviously Butch and Kevin). I'd like to get us all working together on these ideas. o The "PTK Interface" section has some ideas in it that bear examination and discussion. I'm pretty excited by how much Mike has done, so things are looking pretty good! --Paul

ZClass Confusion over object id
by Brian K. Holdsworth 16 Jan '00

16 Jan '00

I have embarked on my first effort to create a custom ZClass for a site I am building. It almost works! The problem has something to do with the way the object "id" gets created when I make an instance of my custom ZClass. I am using Zope 2.1.2 and my ZClass inherits from DTML Document. I upgraded to the latest version hoping it would fix the problem. It didn't, so I assume now that I am doing something wrong. Here is what I am using for my addForm method: <HTML> <HEAD><TITLE>Add Article</TITLE></HEAD> <BODY BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF" LINK="#000099" VLINK="#555555"> <H2>Add Article</H2> <form action="ArticleClass_add"><table> <tr><th>Id:</th> <td><input type=text name="id"></td> </tr> <tr><th>Title:</th> <td><input type=text name="title"></td> </tr> <tr><th>Author:</th> <td><input type=text name="author"></td> </tr> <tr><th>Summary:</th> <td><textarea name="synopisis" cols="40" rows="10"></textarea></td> </tr> <tr><td></td><td><input type=submit value=" Add "></td></tr> </table></form> </body></html> The title, author, and synopsis properties are added to my ZClass on a property sheet called "article_info". I include these lines in my add method so that the properties can be filled in at object creation time: The basic problem is that when I create an instance, the "id" property ends up blank! I see the object in the manage GUI with its id, but when I try to access the "id" of the instance in DTML, I get a value of "<string>" instead of the id I assigned. The other properties, like title and author, get created correctly. The edit page for the new object instance (it is a sub-class of DTML Document) also displays a blank id. Any clues??? 16/01/2000 15:45:12 thanks again. in CF i used to be able to link each title to a dynamically generated page using the ID, like this: a href="newpage.cfm?#ID# so that each title would go to its specific page thanks to the ID. How do you do this in Zope? Cheers Original message from: schenck(a)ultra.posc.org >Giampiero, > >You can easily do that. Take a look at this code. Giampiero, You can easily do that. Take a look at this code. It is a DTML Method, tableCount_html which displays a page that allows a user to select a table name from a select list in a form. The options are retrieved from a data base before the page is displayed: <dtml-var standard_html_header> <form action="tableInstances" method="get"> <h2 align="center"><dtml-var document_title></h2> <hr> <p><font size="+1">Enter query parameters:</font></p> <table> <tr><th>Entity name</th> <td><SELECT NAME="entity_name" SIZE=1> <dtml-in getTableNames> <OPTION><dtml-var table_def_nm null=""></OPTION> </dtml-in> </SELECT> </td></tr> <tr><td colspan=2 align=center> <input type="SUBMIT" name="SUBMIT" value="Submit Query"> </td></tr> </table> </form> <p> </p> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> Here is the code for getTableNames, a Z SQL Method that uses the ODBC interface to query an Oracle database for the possible list of tables to select from: select table_def_nm from table_def order by 1 As you can see, when someone references tableCount_html the getTableNames method is called without the user pressing any buttons. SQL Queries

16/01/2000 13:59:55 Hello there, I am new to zope and i find it great. I am still learning it and I have a few questions, but one in particular; I used Coldfusion before and I was able to do this: I had a db with movies, with Title, director, year and so on. I could run a query looking for Tilte and ID and then output the result on a line and make each of the Titles a dynamically generated link (something like <a href="newpage.cfm?#ID#>#Title#</a> if you know what I mean). Now my question is: is it possible in Zope to run SQL queries without the need to actually click on a Submit button? Cheers

An ex-virgin discusses his first big night with Zope
by Thomas 16 Jan '00

16 Jan '00

Hi all, I have been building my first project based off of Zope. Basically, it is an Article Store with an Interface built in for content folk to add and edit new articles. The other feature is a review function where users can rate each article and give some room for them to provide some of their unique thoughts. This site is based in China, so we need to control/(and perhaps edit) these reviews before publishing them live, and so the reviews first get checked by the content team and then can be published. (this review check is done through the content interface). I wanted to write a general review of Zope and my overall feelings to the list. My background: I have been coding static pages for some time and recently (the past few months) have done very, very basic editing in Zope. I know some basic Javascript and am starting to delve deeply into Python. (as a result of Zope) I have never solely owned a large project and in the past have heavily relied on teammates to build Zope sites. With the completion of my project described above, I am no longer a Zope project virgin. At first, I found Zope's dtml scripting deceptively simple. I thought, "oh, its just like html", but that illusion was shattered after getting a little deeper. At that stage, I was very frustrated and discouraged by my slow progress. I honestly thought I would never understand Zope. I guess this is the steep learning curve everyone talks about. After hitting my head against my keyboard a few time, I decided upon another strategy. I went through all of the Zope Documentation files and then started to go through all of the relevant how-to's (mainly on Zclasses, Aquisition, namespaces, Zcatalog, etc.) Then I hit the list. I had been accumulating a very large box full of Zope mailings, but I never went through them too seriously. I went through about 1000 Zope postings last week. I have to thank this list for helping me out so much. (indirectly albeit) At that stage, I was ready to take on Zope again. I have been at it for the past 8 days nonstop, and my project is almost finished. I am very pleased with my *quick* ability to pick up Zope. My advice to all the newbies out there... stick with it. You will be proud of yourself in the end but you need persistence. I still have questions on some tags and their behavior and Aquisition, but I feel confident enough that I'll get a handle on them soon enough. I have a few ideas which might help folks on the steep learning curve of Zope. 1) Create an FAQ. I think I have already posted questions on the list which never got answered because clueless newbies asked them 100's of times before. I think the questions which hit this list often should be compiled and put on the Zope site in the mailing lists section. This would a) help newbies out and b) sort out repetition from the List. Question is: who will do this? 2) Take apart a product or two. I went through KMnetNews which helped me out a lot. Not only did it provide ideas in action of how Kevin built the product, but it also helped to show me proper dtml syntax. Just wanted to post my thoughts for the list and again thank everyone who contributes. Tom
