G'day, Zope Weekly News is a digest of some of the useful and interesting events which have occurred on the various Zope mailing lists and the Zope.org site. It is published each Wednesday evening. Any opinions contained in the Zope Weekly News are those of the chronicler exclusively. Announcements * Amos Lattier <amos(a)digicool.com> put out a call for FastCGI problems. Amos is revisiting FastCGI support, so the more you complain the better it will be. http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-December/016202.html * Paul Everitt <paul(a)digicool.com> has alerted everyone to the latest issue of Linux Magazine, which contains an article "Gold Rush: Venture Capitalists Discover Linux". The article talks about Digital Creations and Hadar Pedhazur at length. http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-December/016197.html Updates * "htrd" posted an update to his NTUserFolder product. It authenticates Zope users from NT user accounts. It only runs on Windows NT. The latest release is 1.3. http://yyy.zope.org/Members/htrd/NTUserFolder * "phd" has updated mod_pcgi2 several times this week. mod_pcgi2 moves PGCI's calling code into Apache's process to eliminate the so-called "fork tax". This makes requests more responsive. The latest version is 0.1.2. http://yyy.zope.org/Members/phd/mod_pcgi2 Zope.org items * "z113" contributed a How-To on adding your own DTML tags to the language. http://yyy.zope.org/Members/z113/1 Notable Discussions * Art Hampton <arth(a)pacsg.css.mot.com> started a discussion presently underway about the relative merits of mod_pcgi2, vanilla PCGI and FastCGI. http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope/1999-December/016198.html * Anthony Baxter <anthony(a)interlink.com.au> has made and released some modifications to ZCatalog. He's soliciting comments in zope-dev. http://lists.zope.org/pipermail/zope-dev/1999-December/002780.htm; -- Mike Pelletier.

ZDiscussions & SiteAccess
by tonyr＠ep.newtimes.com 29 Dec '99

29 Dec '99

Has anyone else been attempting to use ZDiscussions in conjunction with SiteAccess? Here is the problem I am having: Problem Description: -------------------- When I add discussion item from Virtual Hosted URLs the discussion item adds to discussion but ZDiscussions.children() method returns None for those items. This is not the case for items added via non VirtualHosted URLs, same discussion just different access path. When I add ZDiscussion Items via VirtualHost the items appear to be there in the /manage screens but yet the children function shows None for each of these thus the ZDiscussion index_html is all messed up. Upon further investigation the culprit appears to be the ablolute_url function in conjunction with SiteAccess and ZCatalog. The entries in ZCatalog show: /feedback/1999-12-16/film.html for the "broken" entries done via VirtualHost /city/feedback/1999-12-16/film.html for the functional entries Upon still fruther investigation this problems also accures in the ZCache product when used under SiteAccess. Does anyone have any ideas? I really am trying to make this work. -- ------------------------------- tonyr(a)ep.newtimes.com Director of Web Technology Newtimes Inc. -------------------------------

problems upgrading zope

hi everyone! i attempted to convert a Data.bbb (Zope-1.10.3, ZODB2) database file to a Data.fs (Zope-2.1.1, ZODB3 ?) file using the following syntax: python utilities/bbb.py -x -f Data.fs Data.bbb which returned "corrupt database" error messages. this happened on three different occassions and at very early positions of the database file, i.e. 0 or 9. reversing the reading from back to front using the -e option did not help either. the original database files seem to be fine. at least the 1.10.3 servers are up and running without any problem. the server is an intel box, running suse linux 6.2. we are running python 1.5.2. is this a known problem and does anyone have a workaround. please excuse if this issue was raised here earlier. it seems that i am not receiving all postings from the mailing lists :( please also 'cc' your replies to my e-mail address (basti(a)beehive.de) for the same reason. ciao, basti -------------------------------------------------------------------------- sebastian f. luehnsdorf beehive elektronische medien gmbh -------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://basti.beehive.de http://www.beehive.de mailto:basti@beehive.de mailto:service@beehive.de http://www.zope.de fon: (+49 30) 84 78 20 http://www.i-surf.de fax: (+49 30) 84 78 22 99

I tried to use the re-directory sysmbol "python wo_pcgi.py > error.msg" but to no avail. There are several io streams used by programs: stdin: keyboard input (redirected by < ) stdout: console output (redirected by > ) stderr: error messages (redirected by 2> ) That way you can redirect all output of a command to a file, but still see error messages. python z2.py 2> zope-err.log & or something similar will redirect all stderr output to zope.log. python z2.py &> zope-err.log & will redirect both stdout and stderr to zope-err.log. For more information on this, check out the bash man page and search for REDIRECTION. You'll find out more than you ever wanted to know :-). Zope is already logging all requests in a form that log analyzers like analog, et. al can get to in <Zope Dir>/var/Z2.log. -- Stephen Pitts smpitts(a)midsouth.rr.com webmaster - http://www.mschess.org

"import" within external method file doesn't work
by christian＠newopenness.de 29 Dec '99

29 Dec '99

Hello all, I've tried to write a simple external method as described a thousand times in the excellent documentation. Within the file "A", I'd like to import another file "B" within the same directory. But when I try to add a function from "A" as an external method somewhere in the tree and try to view the DTML document from which the method is called, Zope tells me that it can't find the module I tried to import in "A". Is this a bug or I'm too much newbie? Any help appreciated alot Christian

Linux Installation blues Newbie Problems I/O Errors
by CURTIS David 29 Dec '99

29 Dec '99

Hi, I'm getting to the end of my rope trying to get Zope 2.1 (latest version) installed and running on a RedHat installation. Here are the steps and error messages. Configuration: Linux RedHat 6.1; Python1.5.2-7, Zope2.1.1, Pentium PC Setup: I setup Redhat 6.1 with a Basic installation skipping Apache Web Server. I installed 3 python packages, Base, tools, and Development. Unzip Files: I unzipped the source file in the /var directory using gunzip and tar thusly gunzip /var/Zope-2.1-src.tgz; tar -xvf /var/Zope-2.1-src.tar Change to the Zope directory cd /var/Zope-2.1.1-src Create Zope: I run as root # python wo_pcgi.py everyting seem to compile ok, except a small warning. Setup Zope Passwd # python zpasswd.py -u superuser -p secret access # vi access Run Zope: cd /var/Zope-2.1-src ./start I try to run the installation ./start I get this output::: *-------------------- 1999-12-30-30T04:2711 PROBLEM (100) ZSERVER COMPUTING DEF HOSTNAME ZSERVER MEDUDSA ( V1.13) STARTED HOST NAME: LOCALHOST LOCALDOMAIN PORT : 8080 *----------------- 1999-12-30-30T04:2711 INFO(0) ZSERVER FTP STARTED AUTHORIZER : NONE HOSTNAME: SNAIL PORT: 8021 *------------------ 1999-12-30-30T04:2711 INFO(0) ZSERVER MONITOR SERVER (V1.5) 8099 TRACEBACK(INNERMOST LAST): FILE "/var/Zope-2.1.1-src/Z2.py, line 574, in ? pf=open(PID_FILE, 'w') IOERROR:[errni 13] permission denied: 'var/Zope-2.1.1-src/var/Z2.pid' Now there is not a Z2.pid file in this /var/Zope-2.1.1/var irectory. Do I create one? It seems that the system is trying to create a file here. Do I chmod 0711 .var.Zoipe-2.1.1-src/var or chmod 0600 /var/Zope-2.1.1-src/var? The line in question appears to be writting out the file , but perhaps it can't for some reason! Also, is there an effecient method to trap error messages? I tried to use the re-directory sysmbol "python wo_pcgi.py > error.msg" but to no avail.

Multiple Zope servers?
by Jerry.Spicklemire＠IFLYATA.COM 29 Dec '99

29 Dec '99

Hi Zope Fans, Here are pointers to some Zope Documentation explaining several ways to improve Zope performance by pushing content out to static storage (file system) where it can be served by a "dumb" (fast!) http server. Dynamic Zope is wonderful, marvelous, but like many things perhaps it should be saved for those tasks where less sophisticated means are clearly inadequate. In other words, use the specialist when you need to, leave the rest to generics. http://www.zope.org/Members/rossl/ZMirror *requires license for comercial use* http://www.zope.org/Members/kslee/pseudo_image http://www.zope.org/Members/LiDongfeng/external_image Another item still eludes me, for I dimly recall a Tip or How-TO about redirecting a "file not found" error to Zope for dynamic generation of a page. On success, the new page can then be added to the file system, so next time the file will be served conventionally. My apologies to those who sincerely believe that Zope can be all things to all Web Surfers. The above is evidence that some folks have found a role for Zope as an enhancement to their Web Sites, rather than as the foundation. Later, Jerry S.

<dtml-with> works from one directory but not another depending upon the directory name
by John Glossner 29 Dec '99

I have a case where including a file works based on the name of the folder. My directory looks like this: / /html/ /News/ When I do <dtml-with html> <dtml-var news_html> </dtml-with> I get output as I would expect. However, when I cut and paste this same file to the News directory and do <dtml-with News> <dtml-var news_html> </dtml-with> I get the following traceback: Traceback (innermost last): File /zope/Zope-2.1.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 214, in publish_modul<!-- Traceback (innermost last): File /zope/Zope-2.1.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 214, in publish_modul<!-- Traceback (innermost last): File /zope/Zope-2.1.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 214, in publish_modul<!-- Traceback (innermost last): File /zope/Zope-2.1.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 214, in publish_modul<!-- Traceback (innermost last): File /zope/Zope-2.1.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 214, in publish_modul<!-- Traceback (innermost last): File /zope/Zope-2.1.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 214, in publish_modul<!-- Traceback (innermost last): File /zope/Zope-2.1.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 214, in publish_modul<!-- Traceback (innermost last): File /zope/Zope-2.1.1-linux2-x86/lib/python/ZPublisher/Publish.py, line 214, in publish_modul<!-- Traceback (innermost last): File /zope/Z Does anyone know why the same file should work with the html directory and not the directory named News? Is News somehow a reserved word? Thanks, John
