some SSL some clear content - needs two zope instances?
by Roman Milner 31 Oct '99

Hello. We are in the process of setting up a Zope site - some of which requires SSL some does not. So, do I need two Zope servers or can I avoid this somehow? My first thought was to put all the SSL content in a folder and have all the DTML methods check the REQUEST['SERVER_PORT'] and makes sure it's 443. I don't really know how safe that is as I don't know where SERVER_PORT comes from - the client or the server? Anyways, I can't do that for ZSQL methods or images so that won't work regardless. So what are my other options? I was thinking of maybe an SSLFolder product that won't allow any content to be viewed unless it's coming in on a given (default 443) port (or maybe some other means of checking for SSL) Or adding a "Viewable without SSL" permission - but I really don't know what either of those would entail. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Especially on a simpler way to solve the problem without two Zope servers installed. ^Roman

Disabling/Post-processing Copy-Paste
by Itamar Shtull-Trauring 31 Oct '99

I want to give a collection of objects a unique value for each, stored in a property. Problem is, copying and pasting a object would leave me with two objects with the same value. Is it possible to: A. Disable only Copy and not Cut? or B. Have a object (a ZClass instance, actually) do something automatically when it gets created by a Paste? -- Itamar - itamars(a)ibm.net ---------------------------o----------------------------------------------o Perl/Gimp Greeting Cards | Trust? I have risen to the challenge: http://www.zope.org/Members/webmaven/zope-banner-1.gif The file size is 13k, it's a seven frame animation. Please note that this is only a first draft, and I am still trying to improve the verbiage, layout, and timing of the animation. Announce: Where's the zope? => new version SwiftGenerator
by Jason Cunliffe 30 Oct '99

30 Oct '99

Hello I hope you do not consider this off-topic. This post is intended as food for thought and not advocacy. Zope is notable for its flexible handling of web object structures. But the web (and especially the commercial web) is notable for its hunger for graphics and multimedia. One of the few systems even attempting to create a dynamic platform for this is the combination of Macromedias 'Flash Generator' http://www.macromedia.com/software/generator/ which is often combined with Allaire's ColdFusion... So where does Zope fit in?? 1. SERVER-SIDE MEULTIMEDIA The intrepid Olivier Debon has posted his latest version of SwiftGenerator http://www.swift-tools.com/ It is an obvious candidate tool for use with Zope. Unfortunately, like Macromdedia's own Generator, SwiftGenerator does not generate vector garphics from nothing. It is rather a programable editing tool for prepared garghics and interactive vector graphics. Text can be generated and atrributes and relationships likewise. Both 'Generators' need Macrodmedia Flash as an authoring tool to prepare content. SwiftGenerator has a huge price advantage.[free download] 2. ZOPE MISSING ??? Either way, it is interesting to note that Zope/Python are _not_ present on the listing at the Generator Developers' Network homepage: http://www.gendev.net/ 3. C LIBRARY FOR WRITNG FLASH MOVIES To generate openSWF(FLash) vector files without the Flash applications, it would be necessary to apply/extend Parul Heberli's openSWF library. This could be done via Python and then used as advanced multimedia vector version of PIL (Python Imaging Library). http://reality.sgi.com/grafica/flash/DOC.html 4. RESOURCES http://www.gendev.net/swf/ The SWiFF Info Center has several useful links including to source for C++ swf parser Consider the spec list below. How could/should this be implemented/surpassed using Zope ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------- Swift-Generator is a simple replacement for Macromedia Generator utility. It aims at generating dynamic Flash content. Swift-Generator can replace: · Texts (size, alignment, kerning, color, transparency and font), · Textfields (Flash 4), · Fonts, · Sounds, · Images, · Movie Clips, · Action parameters (in frames or buttons). It can be used as a CGI program for HTTP servers like Apache, or just as a separate utility called to produce a new Flash file whenever it needs to be updated (crontab, schedulers, ...) · Platforms · Linux (x86/MIPS). · FreeBSD 3.1 (x86). · Solaris 2.X (Sparc). · Windows 95/98/NT. · MacOSX. · OS2. · BSDi 3.1. · Flash Operations · Text replacement · Text color and height modification · Text Kerning and Vertical spacing · Text Alignment · Font replacement · Sound replacement · Movie Clip replacement · Image replacement · Accept either Template or Flash files · Variable substitution · Action parameters substitution for: · GetURL (URL/Target) · FS Command (Command/Parameters) · Load Movie (URL/Level#) · Unload Movie (Level#) · Tell Target (Target) · Generation · Script based · CGI 1.1 compliant · Off-line generation · Generate size-optimized flash output · Web · Referer control list · Success Stories with: · Apache (Unix/Win32) · Microsoft IIS · Personal Web Server · Sambar Server · Cold Fusion · Xitami (Unix/Win32) · Roxen · .... ------------------------------------- - Jason ------------------------------------------------- Jason Cunliffe <jasonic(a)nomadicsltd.com> NOMADICS.STUDIO(Design Director) Geo-Digital Arts and Technology Le Vieux Moulin, Route de Mons 83440 SEILLANS, FRANCE Tel: +33 (0)4 94.76.98.72 Fax: +33 (0)4 94.76.97.77

Re: [Zope] WAP/WML for Cell Phone Wireless Web?

The way I was thinking about it was to have two sets of template pages - one produces HTML, the other WML. The alternative is to have one set that produce XML, and convert them on the way out of the system. You'd probably also have to restructure your web applications to better suite the WML model. The other thing you need is a phone company willing to let you supply them WML so that they can send it to the phones (there's WAP-over-SMS, but I don't want to think about how slow and expensive that would be). -- Anthony Baxter <anthony(a)interlink.com.au> It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

gadfly commits and checkpoints Re: [Zope-dev] Re:

Phillip J. Eby wrote: """ Gadfly does support transactions. However, it keeps tables entirely in memory. This can make it blindingly fast for some read-only operations, but it is much slower when committing transactions if the database is large. It is not suited to large DB operations. """ At some level the last sentence is true because upon checkpoint entire gadfly tables are written out to the file system. However it can be mitigated by doing checkpoints less frequently than commits. By default every commit generates a checkpoint, but for better transaction performance you might want to have one checkpoint for every 1000 commits if the database is largish. See the gadfly documentation. -- Aaron Watters === There ain't no sanity clause

Re: [Zope] Generating unique keys

> Bugger. They're not pickle-able. Now, here's a funny. I put together a seperate module called ShrubLock which acquires its own lock, then used it to [attempt to] prevent more than one instance of my Shrubbery from entering a particular piece of code which checks in a non-Zope database to figure out what number it should use next. I was still getting Z2 conflicts, so -- figuring that each class had its own ShrubLock, or something wierd -- I whacked in a lot of debugging code to figure out what was going on. The problem isn't name conflicts, I've figured out. It's the fact that Zope just can't deal with more than one request trying to modify a single object -- including, the ObjectManager I'm trying to add things to. Regards, Garth. -- <gtk(a)well.com>
