installing ZPyGreSQLDA
by Geoff Nordli 29 Oct '99

29 Oct '99

I am trying to get "ZPyGreSQLDA 0.03" connection working, and have a few questions about installation. I can connect to the database, but am unable to run any queries against it. I was reading some of the archived mail, and Bruce Elrick states that you just have to install the product in the /lib/python/products directory, and restart Zope. This is supposed to work. In the README.txt file you have to do what Bruce says, and compile some code: make -f Makefile.pre.in boot make then copy the file _pgmodule.so from the src to the ../src Which is right? I have RH 6.1, Zope RPMs from Jeff, + all the Postgres RPMs from RedHat. thanks, Geoff Nordli

I think when you're accessing external files in general it's a good idea to use fully qualified paths. -jfarr ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hi! I'm a signature virus. Copy me into your .sig to join the fun! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

External Methods ->syntax + file access = how ?
by Jason Cunliffe 29 Oct '99

29 Oct '99

Trying to get PIL [Python Imaging Library. http://www.pythonware.com/products/pil/ ] and other modules to work via Zope External Methods. But so far getting hung up on some simple understanding about Python and Zope. Searched archives, but I could find the answer. When testing outside of Zope, from python shell such as Idle, everything works OK. But inside Zope I keep getting file, URL, or resources not found - error messages, whenever I try to open an image into my python code. Seems like it's either blocked by security checks and/or I am making newbie path mistakes. I've tried a lot of variations with setting paths, experimenting with os.chdir(), and checking the files visible to my code using os.listdir(os.getcwd()). I can import the PIL modules and see the files I want to open in the 'Extensions' folder, but can't open them. At present, all the PIL files are in the 'Extensions' folder, but I understand from the ZCMG that I could also put them in 'Shared'. The ZCMG says that I can create a folder in 'Shared' with company or personal name and then this will be automatically referenced by zope. What is not clear to me what name, why and what do I ave to do to tell zope about the folder name I have created there.? Most of PIL is just python and suffices to parse the image headers, but for image processing, PIL uses a platform-specific library (ie: _imaging.dll on Win32). Where should this go on a ZopeSite? And what is my path needs to import PIL. minimal external method for testing : #pil_test.py import os, sys import Image def pil_test(self): infile = 'animage.jpg' im = Image.open(infile) return im.size, im.format, im.mode won't work: errors as above. ..So I tried opening a simple text text file in 'Extensions' and that failed. Is this illegal?? How do I use python external method to 'open' any file.? Do I have to import htmllib or somesuch and use that to point at my ZopeSite or elsewhere? I've already tested this with loading and displaying local and remote HMTL pages in open. fun, very cool. What syntax will directly load Zope 'Image' objects into Python external methods. The zope error messages reference line 110 of Image.py and line 716 of ImageFile.py So far I 've come up with 4 possibles: 1. The namespace of Zope 'Image' is getting confused by imported PIL 'Image' 2. What I am doing is illegal 3. I am in wrong path 4. Dumb newbie typos I am very keen to get this working, so that we can get on with creating a set of nice Zope image processing methods. These can allow much friendlier end-user uploading of images with automatic linked indexes, thumbnailing, sending e-mail to user groups of images, image compositing etc. Thanks in advance for any tips - Jason Cunliffe ------------------------------------------------- Jason Cunliffe <jasonic(a)nomadicsltd.com> NOMADICS.STUDIO(Design Director) Geo-Digital Arts and Technology Le Vieux Moulin, Route de Mons 83440 SEILLANS, FRANCE Tel: +33 (0)4 94.76.98.72 Fax: +33 (0)4 94.76.97.77

I want to be able to subclass file, then add a few extra properties. when I do this and define a new property sheet, then add a view for the property sheet it doesn't appear. What's Up? CSS & Zope howto
by Ethan Fremen 29 Oct '99

29 Oct '99

Zopistas, I have uploaded a howto about using CSS in the Zope environment. It is fairly thorough, an covers a lot of CSS ground. It covers how you can use CSS, Aquisition, and DTML to make your site very dynamic. It's from a standards-based perspective. http://www.zope.org/Members/mindlace/css_zope is the URL. -- Ethan "mindlace" Fremen you cannot abdicate responsibility for your ideology.

thanks to kevin and others that answered my questions, but I need some more clarifications: > >Zope seems very promising (although the learning curve seems steep) but > >wandering through the documentation I couldn't see if it has (or how easy > is > >to implement) the two features we need most: > >- something that checks the broken links AND informs the authors > >periodically > > This would probably be a useful thing. If someone has written link > checking > code in python, it would probably be pretty easy to convert this to an > External Method to go through the Zope database and check for broken > links. checking the broken links and sendign out emails is the easy part. what I need to know is if Zope assigns (or has a way to enforce an assignment) of pages or bunch of pages to authors. adr

ANN: Brasil On-line launches Zope-based news service
by Luciano Ramalho 29 Oct '99

29 Oct '99

Brasil On-line (BOL) launched yesterday a real-time news service based of the Zope application server platform. The service, which can be seen an <http://www.bol.com.br/noticias/>, is fully automated. Feeds from Reuters and Climatempo, a local weather information provider, are retrieved every 15 minutes and pages are updated accordingly. A third information provider, Gazeta Esportiva, uses remotely accessible forms to post their stories. All pages in the BOL news areas are generated by a Zope application developed by Hiperlogica of Sao Paulo, Brazil <http://www.hiper.com.br>. The code that retrieves weather information was written directly in Python, and feeds a PostgreSQL database, which is queried by Zope. The Reuters material is pulled directly by DTML Methods, which use the ZClient facility included in Zope. The stories are then copied to Zope DTML Documents to be served locally. The BOL news area is the eighth Zope based site developed by Hiperlogica. Other recent cases include the American Chamber of Commerce in Sao Paulo, Brazil <http://www.amcham.com.br>, MAGNET magazine <http://www.magnet.com.br> and the Achademia education portal <http://achademia.uol.com.br>. Early on Hiperlogica focused on Zope. Their first client -- IDGnow!, <http://www.idgnow.com.br>, Brazil's leading technology news web site -- uses a Zope-based solution since April 1999. "Zope is an extremely flexible platform where programmers, designers and end-users of all skill levels can collaborate in way that is more rational and cost-effective than any other system I have tried in five years of web development experience.", says Luciano Ramalho, one of the founders of Hiperlogica. -- The Hiperlogica team wishes to extend to the creators of Python and Zope, and to the entire Zope community, our heartfelt thanks and congratulations on such wonderful pieces of software engineering. Re: [Zope] Medusa performance - was: HELP: downloading file from netscape/old IE can frozezope
by Gilles lavaux 29 Oct '99

Hello, I have used medusa to build a 'host monitoring' system (very easy:I just had to code a module). And I find medusa extremly fast : I have tested it at ~3 millions hit/day(~33hit/sec) whithout problem, actualy I don't know what is the top limit on my config(dec alpha 433). BUT this was only with very small pages. What I dont understand with zope2 is why I have 7 process started: 'python z2.py -D' ?? If I understoud correctly medusa, it's running in a single process, so does it means that Zope use 1 medusa http sever + N (6??) 'zope process' to handle up to N (6?) requests simultanously? How does the Zope2/medusa part works? Uncatalog problem... Cannot delete Zclass instance!!
by Geir B Hansen 29 Oct '99

29 Oct '99

I have a Zclass newsdoc, with base classes of catalogaware and object-manager.. Everything worked nicely, it added and deleted itself nicely from the catalog and in all aspects behaved as expected.. The problem was when i tried to delete an instance of it.. I get the error : Error Type: ValueError Error Value: Uncatalog of absent id 'exp/news/HRnews/newsdoc199910101612' - So it evidently cannot uncatalog the newsdoc from the catalog, but should this stop it from deleting the instance ?? I tried manually removing it from the catalog, then deleting it -result : didn't work.. Tried clearing the entire catalog, then deleting - result : didn't work.. Tried indexing all documnets again, then deleting - result : didn't work tried changing the id of the Zclass, to break the documents, so that they would not inherit from zcatalog - result : they didn't break, thus it didn't work .. I'd really like not having to actually delete my Zclass and the recreate it.. Ideas on what i might do wrong ??
