HELP: downloading file from netscape/old IE can froze zope

Hello, I have just discovered a very nasty problem with Zope and all my versions of netscape(up to 4.6), and with the old verions of IE: - I put .PNG pictures in a folder.Clicking on thoses file open the 'save as' dislog box (I don't know why the extension is not recognized), if people press the cancel button at this time, Zope is frossen. The only thing to do is to kill the zope process and restart it. It's working fine with IE5. Has someone a solution to this? Which is the faulty piece of code? the python SocketServer, the ZopeHttpServer? (NB: this problem occurt on Zope 1.10.3. This is working ok with Zope2; the only Pb is that the system we have developed here doesn't works on Zope2!) If I can not fix this kind of Pb, the only system using Zope we have here at the European Space Agency/Italy center may disapear :-( Thanks for any help. Gilles Lavaux

Before you go hacking though, you might want to look at the CVS version of Zope that has Amos's KeywordIndex. This sounds essentialy to be like your ListIndex. Also, be forwarned, this is deep voodoo. -Michel

I honestly haven't come up with a really good solution yet. Solution: Make the files/folder persistant but every request checks for the existance of its filesystem counterpart. If its gone then it gets deleted. Slow but it would work.

Basicly, there's no good speed/space tradeoff in indexes to get this done well. You can't simply regular-expression search through the index because this would require looking at every single word in the index, which could take a looooong time. To give you an example, htdig is probaby the most popular indexing engine in the open source world. It doesn't even do wildcard searching, the best it can do is 'substring' searching, and it has this to say about it: substring Matches all words containing the queries as substrings. Since this requires checking every word in the database, this can really slow down searches considerably. Due to the complexity of this problem, I don't know of any open source indexer that does this. There is a particularly interesting algorithm called 'n-grams' that will let you do simple 'globbing' (DOS style wildcards) but it does have an additional space requirement in the index. -Michel

In almost all cases I am perfectly happy that the files are downloaded from zope to the computer. What I find not acceptable is that if the transfer doesn't complete for some reason, Zope froze. Like in my exemple with the cancel case: -You cancel the transfer, You close the browser. Zope is still unreacheable, and will never respond again. I HAVE to find a solution to this, by putting a timeout somewhere in the Http module or something else. I will try the python httpserver alone, to see if he is the responsible. If it's not him, it's some zope1_10_3 component, or I am wrong??. My last solution is to have a watch-dog which comunicate with Zope every n sec, then kill it/restart it if it doesn't reply. But it's a ugly solution. I'm trying to build an interface to allow users to change their passwords (only their passwords). I have no problem getting the new password and changing the old one. The problem is a professional site would ask the user to enter their current password and verify it is correct before they allow the user to change their password. The question then is does anyone have any ideas on how to compare a user entered password to what Zope has stored as the password? Thanks, DR

How to handle file uploads in python?

Hi, I was able to create a simple ZClass to handle uploads/file attachment. No problem there. Next I want to do the same thing but use python instead with Jeff Rush's Poll product as a template. I'm currently stumped on the following piece of code: def manage_edit(self, field1, field2, field3, attachment, SUBMIT='Change', REQUEST=None): "Store Away Possibly-Modified Basic Attributes" self.field1 = field1 self.field2 = field2 self.field3 = field3 try: manage_addFile(id=attachment.filename, file=attachment) except: pass <snip> which only results in the following error message Error Type: IOError Error Value: [Errno 5] I/O error The python class subclasses CatalogAware as well as OFS.ObjectManager as I was hoping to be able to place the uploaded file in the object itself. I've scoured the mailing list as well as looked at the source code of some products but to no avail. Any ideas? Thanks, Meng Kuan
