I'm setting up a tracking system that basically looks like this. Donor -> Donation -> Beneficiary As the system will grow to a large size we're wanting a reliable database to be the backend for this. What kind od DB do people recommend? Can ZODB handle this? How many records does ZODB handle well? Check out http://www.zope.org/Members/petrilli/DARoadmap I think I saw a note somewhere claiming ZPyGreSQLDA being compliant with level 2. By default when emacs saves a file, it first renames the original file and puts a ~ at the end and then saves the new file, which to Zope looks like a totally new file. Since Zope cannot determine whether or not you intend this content to be a method or a document. To supress this behavior with XEmacs, use (setq efs-make-backup-files nil) I'm assuming ange-ftp has some similar option. -Michel

Newbie hoping for help

What I've got so far: Folder A xml document A (XML Document) xsl document a (XML Document) xsl document b (XML Document) stylesheet (DTML Method) et. al. (more method/documents) All documents were loaded into Zope using the XML Document product (FYI). I've got code that renders 'xml document A' with 'xsl document a' into IE5.0. I do this by calling the DTML method 'stylesheet' which looks like: <dtml-var standard_xsl_header> <dtml-in "xsl_document_a[0]"> <dtml-var toXML> </dtml-in> <dtml-var standard_xsl_footer> Now what I want to do: I would like to have user interaction to rerender the page using 'xsl document b'. How, or what, do I do with the dtml-in code to get this to happen. My approach would be to set a property on the containing folder to hold the users choice but I don't know how I would use it here. Thanks for any Help Dale

Hmmm... I dont think this method is going to work. The win32security.LogonUser function doesn't allow you to authenticate to a remote computer. From the docs: --- begin docs --- win32security.LogonUser PyHANDLE = LogonUser( userName, domain , password , logonType , logonProvider ) Attempts to log a user on to the local computer, that is, to the computer from which LogonUser was called. You cannot use LogonUser to log on to a remote computer. Parameters userName : string The name of the user account to log on to. domain : string The name of the domain, or None for the current domain password : string The password to use. logonType : int Specifies the type of logon operation to perform. keyword args where the keyword is a variable in dtml

I want to change the following dtml which works:        to somethiong where 'lastValue' is a parameter. The problem is manage_changeProperties(lastValue=newval) takes keyword args and I am not sure how to prepare to pass the args if lastValue is the value of some variable. Regards, Albert

ZServer port 80 wierdness

I am having a problem running ZServer on port 80. It runs fine on port 8080, however when I start it up on port 80 ( I am doing it as root), whenever I try to browse over to the "manage" pages, it just keeps on trying to load the page, continuously, but never getting there. When I look at the logs, it just keeps logging a neverending series of GET's. I am forced to use PCGI with Apache on my linux box,which IMHO is a pain in the arse. Any ideas? Thank you! -- SyN

comparing Zope with Vignette, IPS and others

FutureTense IPS is basically a web development tool that sits on top of Netscape Application Server, using the Applogic API. It is closely tied to NAS so you can't run one without the other (although for some reason the license for NAS with IPS is cheaper than NAS itself. Go Figure!) Like Vignette, IPS also requires a database, since it creates a handful of system tables that it needs to operate. IPS uses an XML-based programming language that closely resembles ColdFusion, if you've ever seen that, which makes it fairly easy to program. It has a <CFOUTPUT> equivalent called <REPLACE> where you specify what variables you want to replace with values(only needed for plain HTML tags). However, IPS is MUCH less feature-rich, or robust than ColdFusion, and it lacks the community and custom CF tags that Allaire has with Coldfusion. FutureTense also has a web-based administration tool called Xcelerate that is similar to the Zope management pages and sits atop and is written in the IPS Content server XML language. It has a lot of features that Zope has and others, including Editorial Workflow and Approval system, form-based content entry, Asset database (like an ODB), and various others. Its a little "prettier" than Zope, but not much different. The worst part of FutureTense is that there are like 3-4 different tools that you need to edit in order to add objects and templates. There is the IPS Content Server Admin, there is the Catalog Tool, which is basically a GUI tool that adds records to tables. There is also the Xcelerate admin tool and Xcelerate itself that must be contended with. Finally, there is this esoteric Properties editor that must be modified when new Assets are added, I have no clue what it is for, but you need it to create Assets. You've probably seen all the Vignette comparisons, but the biggest difference between Zope and Vignette is the language (Tcl versus DTML/Python) and the complete lack of a web-based administration tool (it comes with a set of Client/Server GUI development and administration tools). Some things that StoryServer has that are cool are the Observation and Personalization Servers which keeps track of user behavior and can be used to deliver personalized content (very cool!), a Syndication Server for broadcasting info around the web and a decent page caching system. Other than that, I am very put off by the Tcl language, so I never really pursued it.
