Zope a good solution for this?

Hi All, This is a general question because I don't have Zope up and running now. We have a large (Sybase) database of gene expression information which includes an anatomical dictionary. The anatomical dictionary is hierarchical - i.e. organized by embryonic stage, anatomical structures, substructures, cell types. Currently there is a (Python) script that periodically generate HTML files from the database which list all of the dictionary terms in a space-delimited text format. This format is not only clumsy (these are long lists), but it's also not interactive. Ideally, we'd like to display the data as a hierarchical tree, allowing expansion and collapse of each node (e.g. click on "brain" node and get all the substructures of the brain, click on a brain substructure and get the cell types found in that substructure). Also, we might like to have users be able to make queries directly from the anatomical dictionary (e.g. what genes are expressed in this cell type in the cerebellum?) >From the Zope docs that I've read, it seems like Zope is well suited for this. We also have some very good Python programmers here (and I've done a bit). However, before I go full bore in trying to convince my boss, I'd like to hear from the Zopistas: Does this problem scream Zope!? I know you can use SQL with the tree tag, but are there examples that I could look at? (recent posts to the list about this haven't gotten a lot of responses) What is the status of the Sybase DA? Using Property Sheet Methods in Z Class

In a Z Class I am creating (the one I wrote about in http://www.zope.org/Members/lstaffor/zProperties) I have property sheet named "InstanceConstants" which contains a property "pub_date". When accessing an instance of that class, "pub_date" is clearly available in the namespace of the object. However, the property sheet method <dtml-if "hasProperty('pub_date')"> always returns FALSE. I presume that somehow I have to qualify "hasProperty" with "InstanceConstants", but after spending an hour trying to follow the Property Sheets and ZClasses code, I still haven't found the answer. To those who showed me how to access items in a list (put the identifier in quotes, e.g., don't say parms[0], say "parms[0]") - thanks! I think a 'quoting-howto' would be a wonderful thing. Right now I paw through the egroups zope index hoping I'll find an incantation that will show me how to call a particular method (like, why doesn't <dtml-var "_.int(_.time.time())"> work when the time module is right there big as life?) Now I can't get past newlines. I have an input form that uses a couple of textareas where newlines can be inserted. I'm sticking all those form inputs - mostly textboxes, but some textareas - into an mailhost method that calls a SQL method that inserts them into a database. These textarea fields are supposed to go into a 'memo' field in the database that can accept newlines. As long as I put no newlines in the form, the SQL insert goes fine. But if newlines exist, I get parse errors from the SQL interpreter. I can't see exactly what's going to the SQL interpreter because the SQL is not returned. But it's got to be a newlines problem - if there are no newlines in the textarea, there are no parse problems. I tried (in the SQL method) changing the <dtml-sqlvar textitem type=string> to "<dtml-var textitem newlines_to_br>" (adding quotes around the dtml-var to help stringify it) but this made no difference. Anybody figured this out?

Then we got deeper into it and the short story is any complicated math equations or scientific formulas drawn from the database objects bring the server to a halt... After tweeking and rewriting code, segmenting and a few other attempts we decided to stick with Php and MySQL which had never even hiccuped on us... I guess it (zope) has its place in a non commerce or inventory system... and of course it is still early in the development cycle. J--

'Edit This Page' ... a simple solution

A few days ago I posted the Q below and got several great responses. For my first time around, I�ve implemented the easiest solution. The writing below is deliberately simplified for my high school students. -=-=-=-=-= Question -=-=-=-=-=- Can someone please point me to code that will <> display an �Edit this page� link on pages for which the viewer has edit permission <> redirect user to an �edit & save� window <> hide the link from other users -==-=-=-=- Simple Solution =-=-=-=-=-= Go to the root level of Zope. Click on the Security tab and add the role 'Editor'. Select checkboxes to give Editor these Permissions: Access contents information Add documents, images, and files Add folders Change DTML Documents Change DTML Methods Create a test folder something like... ID: TestEdit Title: Test of User Editing Open the TestEdit folder, then the acl_users folder. Create a new user (Bob)give him a password (bobpw), and assign him the role Editor. Bob is now ready to add or edit any of the contents of the TestEdit folder. However, if Bob enters the site as an Anonymous user he will not (unless he knows some Zope) be able to access the management screen where he can open and edit a DTML document or method. Here's a simple (kludgy?)way to get Bob into his own pages. At the Zope root level, open Standard_HTML_footer. The original code looks (I think) like this:  </BODY></HTML> Revise it like this:  <a href="manage_main">Edit page</a> (password required). </BODY></HTML> This will put an 'Edit page' link on the bottom of each page, but the link will normally not be seen because the many line breaks will push the link below the bottom of the screen. Editors will be instructed to scroll down to find the link. When an editor clicks on the link she will be instructed to enter her name and password before gaining management access to the content pages. -=-=-=-=-=- This approach is far from elegant but it works... Jan-Oliver: As Phil Harris has already explained, you can reset your superuser name and password using zpasswd.py. The problem is that the install assigns you a name and password, but it scrolls off the screen before you can read it. The install should be rewritten so that the superuser name and password are written to the screen at the end of the install script. FAQ: How to use database connections directly

I'm a newbie to Zope and try to access a database from my ZClass. I tried to access a database connection by finding it with SQLConnectionsIDs and then applying the connection object's query method with an SQL statement and finally returning the result. This caused an endless loop in the server. So I assume that's not the right way to do it. Can I do that at all without adding a ZSQL Method? If it doesn't work without a ZSQLMethod, how can I add one in an external method (I don't want to bother with ZSQLMethods when creating my object) if I already have a reference to the database connection? manage* mathods

Hello, when I try to use the "Find" tab in the manage screen I don't seem to be able to find any of the builtin(?) manage* methods as "manage", "manage_main", "manage_access". Where can i find those methods and with which objects are they associated? I'd like to use them as a starting point for our editing system (like using a manage method with less options and maybe a simpler interface for the average user). thanks Oliver
