Alexander, thanx again for your help. <dtml-var "PARENTS[0][PARENTS[0].id +'_' + PARENTS[1].id + '_p1']"> is the right idea, but for some reason it's just quoting the HTML....I must admit I'm curious to know why the "PARENTS[0]" is used twice. <dtml-var "PARENTS[0].id +'_' + PARENTS[1].id + '_p1'"> seemed to make more sense to me, but it just returned the string that needed to be replaced. I'd also managed to get the same result (sting, no substitution) with <dtml-with id> <dtml-var "id+'_'"><dtml-var "PARENTS[1].id+'_p1'"> </dtml-with> Although I have no idea what difference the "id" in the <dtml-with id> makes. Thanx again, Chris

Zope intro at PLUG in Philadelphia 10/6
by Chris McDonough 30 Sep '99

I think I will be giving a short talk on Zope at the Philadelphia Linux Users' Group (PLUG) meeting on October 6 (next week). I talked earlier today with its organizer, and I'm pretty sure its a go. See http://www.op.net/~darxus/plug/anouncement/anouncement.html for more info. If you're local, stop by... I'd love to meet other people in the area that are Zope freaks.

How Fast & Stable??
by Geoff Caplan 30 Sep '99

30 Sep '99

Hi folks Thanks for your very full and thoughtful replies. I am sorry I have not responded sooner, but I was called away from the office on a personal matter... Reading your replies, the thing that most concerns me is the question of how to get around the limitations of CGI. I'm afraid that I am not up to speed yet on all the details of the different approaches. Can some kind person please spell out the alternatives, with their pros and cons? If speed and scalability is the priority, what is the recommended approach? >From the tone of the thread, it looks as if things are moving towards FastCGI. I am also looking at a solution with Tcl/Velocigen, and the guys there write that: >>>>>>>>>> Freely available interfaces do exist that use the FastCGI standard. These other solutions require you to dedicate a single process for each script executed and encourage the creation of fewer and larger, more complex scripts, rather than many smaller, easy to manage scripts. Also, these other FastCGI Perl implementations require you to know the details of the FastCGI protocol, and force you to manage memory and system resources. >>>>>>>>>> Do these factors apply when FastCGI is used with Zope - or is Zope smart enough to handle memory and system resource management for the developer? Sorry if these are ignorant questions - this is a new field for me! Thanks Geoff Caplan

Actually, id is a method on _documents_, but an attribute of most other objects, including folders, mail hosts, etc. -- but interestingly not image uploads or the Application object. I can't find where the document's id() method is defined -- difficult to do a grep here, "id" pops up everywhere! -- so I can't explain it. Perhaps Jim can shed some light on this interesting dichotomy. -- Alexander Staubo http://www.mop.no/~alex/ "`This must be Thursday,' said Arthur to himself, sinking low over his beer, `I never could get the hang of Thursdays.'" --Douglas Adams, _The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_ > -----Original Message----- > From: Pavlos Christoforou [mailto:pavlos@gaaros.msrc.sunysb.edu] > Sent: 30. september 1999 01:47 > To: Phil Harris > Cc: Chris Cooke-Johnson; zope(a)zope.org > Subject: Re: [Zope] RE: Newbie PARENTS question - <Folder instance at > 8577a18> > > > On Thu, 30 Sep 1999, Phil Harris wrote: > > > How about (untested) > > > > <dtml-var "PARENTS[1].id"> > > > > Probably: > <dtml-var "PARENTS[1].id()"> > > as id is a method. > > Pavlos > > > _______________________________________________ > Zope maillist - Zope(a)zope.org > http://www.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope > > (Related lists - please, no cross posts or HTML encoding! > > To receive general Zope announcements, see: > http://www.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-announce > > For developer-specific issues, zope-dev(a)zope.org - > http://www.zope.org/mailman/listinfo/zope-dev ) >

The '_.None,_' trick fixes lots of problems and its really not intuitive at all. Is there way in which the namespace can be passed in by default in an expression? I imagine "folder.method" will mean the method object rather than a call but is it possible that "folder.method()" can be made equivalent to "folder.method(_.None, _)"???? Or would this screw somthing up fundamental?

I think the idea of the import tag. If you had something like <dtml-import "imports.folder"> Then it would add it to the bottom of the namespace stack so that if aquisition failed the name lookup would try your "imported" location. Will this work the way I propose? Import might not be the best name? I think this would make things a lot nicer for people and be a whole lot more intuitive than the above.

That > way when the ZClass > definition changes, the form would too. I think this is a really good idea. However there would need to be more meta data kept about the properties to determine how to represent it well, eg a textarea for a string property is ofter more appropriate than a simple input box. To do this, perhaps each property could have an optional edit field where you can put in property name inpedendent html that would render an edit widget for a single property. If fact now that I'm on the topic. Why are properties and and objects/methods so seperate? It seems to me what I'm describing above is creating a speciaiztion of a simple object type (ie string) with a different render or edit method. What aren't properties objects? What can't objects be extended in an as-hoc manner. Why can't complex objects such as an XML document exist as a property and be changed/viewed in the same way as any property on a property sheet? Why can't I copy/rename/delete any property like I can a method. I see the difference between methods and properties as a organizational one rather than a logical one.

Be careful what you ask for. :) This may be what you want: <dtml-var "PARENTS[1].id"> This should also answer your question about "a compound call". The nesting qualifier in Python and Zope is the dot ("."). Note that Zope expressions are Python expressions. Some things are attributes, others are functions. While <dtml-var title_or_id> gives you the title or ID of the document or associated object, this is because Zope knows how to call functions. On the other hand, <dtml-var "title_or_id"> will give the string representation of the title_or_id() function (something like <function title_or_id at 8f5288>). Instead, use: <dtml-var "title_or_id()"> This goes for a lot of things. Note that id is an attribute, not a function. Doing "id()" ain't valid. Also note that "dtml-var" only "renders" stuff. If you want to call something with parameters, you need to use "dtml-call". For example: <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('Foo', 1)"> But you can also do: <dtml-call MyObject> ...assuming MyObject is callable; ie., it's either (a) a function, or (b) a class instance implementing the Python __call__() method. Once you read up on Python a bit (assuming you have not), you'll find these two possibilities are the same side of different coins, really. :) -- Alexander Staubo http://www.mop.no/~alex/ "`This must be Thursday,' said Arthur to himself, sinking low over his beer, `I never could get the hang of Thursdays.'" --Douglas Adams, _The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy_ > -----Original Message----- > From: Chris Cooke-Johnson [mailto:chriscj@gocarib.com] > Sent: 30. september 1999 01:03 > To: Phil Harris > Cc: zope(a)zope.org > Subject: [Zope] Newbie PARENTS question - <Folder instance at 8577a18> > > > Thanx Phil, > > but that substitution is giving me "<Folder instance at 8577a18>" not > the id of the parent folder... > > any ideas? > > Phil Harris wrote: > > > > Hi Chris > > > > Have you tried > > > > <dtml-var "PARENTS[1]"> > > > > Might work ;¬) > > > > Phil > > phil(a)philh.org > > > > -----Original Message----- > > From: zope-admin(a)zope.org [mailto:zope-admin@zope.org]On > Behalf Of Chris > > Cooke-Johnson > > Sent: 29 September 1999 22:27 > > To: zope(a)zope.org > > Subject: [Zope] Newbie PARENTS question > > > > Hi there, > > > > I'm trying to reference the folder above from a DTML > method.
