hi again, i've been guilty in the past of going overboard with a new technology that i become enamoured with. so, before i go over the top with zclasses, can i just play out this scenario and seek input on the appropriateness of zclasses : a city guide site with events and locations pretty much like citysearch.com ; data is currently held in a relational database (mysql) which allow for great sorting of data (especially with one-to-many relationships for dates of events). images are stored on the filesystem and the entire mysql database can be held in memory making for very fast queries. why move this to zope's object database ? i'm only concerned with performance on the website.... we have security and data-entry all sorted out anyway so ACL's etc are not a factor. performance is paramount.* * i will admit that if we were building this site from scratch, it would have been a no-brainer : zclasses would have saved me buiding all those tedious management screens which seem to accompany every app !!!! it especially seems weird to move images to the zodb as mentioned in some previous threads because that would increase the size of the database such that it might not be able to sit permanently in RAM finally , whilst zope is looking excellent for application development, i'd be lying if i were to say that i am not nervous about using it on my production machine. i'm in the midst of converting a website with 2-3 million hits/day which is 200,000-300,000 page views (80% of which are dynamically generated) to zope. we're using apache and cgi right now and the server is handling it admirably (PIII 450, 512 MB RAM, U-W SCSI, FreeBSD 3.2). apache has been rock solid. is anyone handling comparable loads on zope at the moment ? using zserver or zope-on-apache ? sorry for the long questions cheers, chas

hi folks, i was out of the fold for about 4 months and just returned to zope... i'm blown away by the progress it's making. serious kudos to digicool and the entire community 8) anyway, i've just been playing with zclasses and have to say they're the damn nearest thing i've seen to Lotus Notes' Designer - hell, they're even better : true object orientation and we can use python. (anyone who's had to use lotuscript/vb knows what i mean). however, i'm missing sommething. i can create these documents (oops, i mean zclass instances) but how do i get them out of the object db again ? is it possible to create the equivalent of Notes 'views' ? ie. filter all the instances of a class and/or with certain values of given properties ? eg. just say i had a zclass called "articles" and each article has an "author" and a "date". i then create 100 instances of this zclass. how could i display all the articles written by a given author or on a certain date ? cheers chas

Which Sybase DA product are you using? There are currently two separate products: - The unsupported ZSybaseDA 0.9 by Brian Hooper; and - ZSybaseDC 2.1.0 by Digital Creations (is this one official yet? It is not, that I could find, on any of the Zope sites) Both are based on Peter Godman's ctsybase extension module. Unfortunately, in my experience both products are not currently suitable for production use. A quick summary follows. Brian Hooper's version: - This is currently the most stable, but the DA is not thread safe, so Zope must to be run either using pcgi_publisher, or with ZServer in single-threaded mode ("z2.py -t1" or "./start -t1"). - It does not escape control characters correctly, due (according to BH) to code having been copied verbatim from the MySQL DA. I have a patch for this. - It does not support the "image" datatype out of the box. I have a patch for this. - A little shaky. It mostly works. Digital Creation's version: - Problem with committed transactions disappearing. - Does not seem to support batch queries, even if the batch query is something like: set dateformat dmy <dtml-var sql_delimiter> select * from foo (it will incorrectly tell you that this can't be done because there are multiple queries returning data.) - Raises Unauthorized exception in conjunction with "int" columns that contain "null" values. Both versions: Neither version supports long objects (eg., most images, and long text fields). Neither version correctly handle "null" column values in conjunction with "char"-class fields. Null values are returned as "None". I have patch for BH's product for this. Neither version correctly handles submittal of empty strings. [*] A workaround is to insert all empty strings as nulls; I have a patch for BH's product that does this. Godman's ctsybase module _may_ suffer from a memory-corrupting bug that slowly eats out of your Zope installation, requiring a restart to fix things. So far this is just a theory. [*] I admit I'm unfamiliar with Sybase -- I've only used this product for about a month, although I have earlier with MSSQL (which is built from the Sybase engine) (and MSSQL does not exhibit this anomaly) -- but CT-Library's handling of empty strings is weird to say the least. It turns out that if you do something like insert foo (bar) values ('') then Sybase will insert the "bar" value as ' ' (one space). This happens consistently with Zope, isql, and sqsh. Sybase doesn't seem to care about trailing spaces at all. So 'abc' and 'abc ' (= 'abc' with one trailing space) are both one and the same to Sybase, and it turns out Sybase trims trailing spaces from the strings you input. In all honesty, I have been holding back on even trying to dig into zope further than I had with the 1.0 product until the binaries for 2.0 were out. Now I can really dig into it and use it! the xml and webdav capabilities are things I really want to explore...
