Folks, here's a great opportunity for someone to step up and make a big-time difference in Zope land. For those of you that can write C, doing an Apache module shouldn't be more than an exercise in diligence. The Apache module API is pretty well documented and there are a good number of examples. The PCGI part of the equation is so very, very small that, were someone to get comfortable with the Apache API, this project would be straightforward to say the least. On the other hand, it's positive impact would be gargantuan. A huge amount of Zope frustration comes from things that deal with Apache integration, *particularly* process activation. I view the usability win to be at least as high as the performance win. I hate to beg, but...PLEEEEEEAAASE! --Paul

Are you connecting directly or through Apache? If the latter, then there is a a small (four line) patch you have to apply. Zope 20.a: IE5 Web Folder 'unexpected error'

Having tried some other people's IE5 installations, it now looks like Zope is doing something that IE5 doesn't like, so that opening a web folder just switches the toolbar to folder mode and pops up the 'unexpected error' dialog. The 'Zope Zen' of multiple browser windows and _manage

Hi, This is an observation really. I find that if I have two browser windows open that are both in the 'manage' window that I can get 'unusual' results - pages that I've edited in one browser window don't show up in the other one, as well as a vague feeling of uneasiness. What I'm trying to get into the habit of doing is to run Internet Explorer (not a bad beast on the Mac...) in *a, ie single* 'manage' window and run Netscape Communicator (as an 'anonymous' user). I *believe* it's got to do with cookies and tree's and the like, but that's more from 'acquired' (ho ho) knowledge and not from an in depth examination of the code. At some point in the "future" (under 6 months? :-) there's a little widget called ZDaemon that will see the light of day. It deals generically with the issues involved in managing LRP like this, including reforking as necessary and identifying checkpoints so that broken software doesn't restart constantly... this will take over process management from the current pcgi interface, which will make the remaining piece (that would plug into Apache, NSAPI, ISAPI, etc) relatively trivial. Having said that, we'd love to have someone who knows enough about Apache's module interface, to write one of these for the community... Chris

This however hasn't been written yet... honestly, DTML was never engineered for much of what it is currently being used for, but unfortunately the alternatives are more painful (with the exception of ZClasses, but it's not ready for use by most people). FYI: Portal Toolkit Slides and Demo available

For those of you who didn't get a chance to see a demo of the Portal Toolkit at Linux Expo, we've put it on-line on the Zope site: http://www.zope.org/Products/PortalToolkit/Tour/ These slides explain what the Portal Toolkit is, and show it in action though the magic of animated GIFs! Zope/Apache Authentication problem again!

Hi all. Refering to Chuck Mead's Zope/Apache HOW-TO email, I found it very useful. Thanks for taking the effort and I'm sure it will not be wasted. I have Red Hat 5.2 with Apache 1.3.6. Anyway, I have a few problems following the instructions. - I can't execute htpasswd command. Why so?? - Can I not use srm.conf? Can I just put the code <Location> ... </Location> into httpd.conf? - Can I put the Rewrit Can you please send the solution to my email as well? Thanks in advance.

Very well done. <snip> I second that - I like this documentation technique. Nothing else could have explained the portal toolkit so clearly in 2 minutes. I think more of these could help newcomers more quickly understand what zope does. Down the road, if you want to add a narration soundtrack, check out the realplayer G2 stuff. I just made a slideshow with voice and music tracks without much hassle at all. -simon
