This is basically what I did to get it working. I think the libraries being in a weird place stem from the --with-next-framework option which I assume expects to be put into an Openstep framework setup and set's Pythons paths to be:: .../lib/ instead of the usual:: .../lib/python1.5/ (the source says it's because NeXT's Frameworks do automatic versioning). This gets compiled _right into Python!_, but none of the makefiles and friends seem to catch it. My blue box STILL refuses to work (waaa!), so I spend a lot of time in either MacOS 8.6 or MacOS X Server (mostly in 8.6 due to (a) a better browser, and (b) more familier tools (yay Alpha!):)). Thus, I don't have access to that particular bit of patched Python source right now. It made things significantly easier, but was kindof a hack. I'd be very interested in getting more information about the NeXT Frameworks and maybe configuring the default Python makefiles to have a "make framework" option that basically acts like "make install", but takes into account any existing Python framework (like Objective Everything's for example) and follows the right versioning behaviour and other NeXT framework setups. Essentially: for Python: ./configure --with-next-framework --with-threads --with-dyld --prefix=[whatever] then put libpython1.5.dylib into /usr/lib No matter what you use for --prefix, this will put python and its development libraries in a really weird configuration that zope will not understand properly, so I symlinked the heck out of what I had to make it look like it was in "standard" locations. I suppose you could really move them around, too. adding LDLIBRARY=/usr/lib/libpython($VERSION).dylib into python's Makefile.pre.in in /lib/python1.5/config fixes the problems with finding the dylib change "sys.executable" to "[whatever]/bin/python" in wo_pcgi.py and do.py in your zope root. and I may have forgotten a thing or two, but it should compile and run. If you take better notes and get it working, you might post those to the list. I have a feeling OS X is going to be yet another popular platform for Zope. Now I need to try to get Mailman working... Since we have Ken Manheimer, one of the key people from Mailman, here now we've talked a lot about the overlap between Mailman and Zope. Ken has done some experiments with putting a Zope front end on Mailman. You could probably reduce the code in Mailman tenfold and increase its breadth ten fold by just doing a straight port. OTOH, you could reinvent Mailman based on the Zope model of turning over control. Anyway, the imminent version of the portal toolkit will be more like an archive manager. --Paul

Automatically restarting ZPyGreSQLDA connection

Hi, Is there any way to catch the error from a Zope Database Adapter and restart it ? I'm experiencing what I suspect are timeout problems (sometimes a bunch of imapd's drive the load to >10 and make the computer really slow). The symptom is that at some point I get a traceback from _pgmodule instead of nice page. The only way to fix it after that is going to manage screens and shutdown/startup the connection I would like to catch this exception and do the shutdown/startup automatically (and perhaps log that it happened) Or would the only reasonable place to do such things be inside the DA ? The latter should not be too hard, just try: to send an empty query before the real one (con.query("")) and in except: open a new one (and log the error if desired) The overhead should be almost nothing, at least when using domain sockets. --------------- Hannu

What happens is this: DTML is pre-parsed, and all the DTML tags are replaced by object instances representing those tags. The attributes are stored as instance variables. This means that 'sortby' is evaluated only once, when you save the DTML code. How to reference PARENTS' Document

Hi, If B is a folder of folder A, how can I reference a Document,eg, index_html of folder A in a DTML Document of folder B? I can reference a property of folder A by , but I can't figure out the above I asked. Any idea? T.C. Huang

sysv init script for Zope 2

Here is an init script for Zope2/ZServer. Folks might find it useful just as a wrapper around z2.py. That's how I'm using it. On Redhat Linux, the init scripts are kind of covoluted-- I'm still not sure how it handles killing daemons. failed to compile on BSDI 4.0

Hi, has anybody successfully compiled zope 2.0.0a1 on a BSDI 4.0 Intel class machine? I can compile the package on a Sparc Solaris 2.6 with no problems but I got the following errors (warnings?) during the compilation process :- gcc -D_HAVE_BSDI -I../Components/ExtensionClass -g -O2 -I/usr/local/include/python1.5 -I/usr/local/include/python1.5 -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -c ./../Components/ExtensionClass/ExtensionClass.c ld ExtensionClass.o -o ExtensionClass.so ld: warning: cannot find entry symbol _start; defaulting to 08048074 After this point, I got a whole lot of undefined references. The particular ld from Solaris 2.6 is the one supplied while the ld that gives the warning prints the following with "ld -v" :- GNU ld version 2.8.1 (with BFD 2.8.1) Many thanks. Juay Kwang
