- Setting up 2 Zope's

I want to make to two web sites in my server and I thought it would be better to have 2 Zope's running separatly (mainly because of permissions and for being able to move the databases from one machine to other) As if I'm not sure if this is possible. Can someone tell me if it's worth to find the problem, or if this won't ever work? I tried the following * I instaled 2 zope directories in /usr/local/zope and /usr/local/zope2 * I instaled Zap and I added one extra rewrite rule to the Apache/start file -c "RewriteRule ^/site/(.*) $dot/../../zope2/Zope.cgi/\$1 [last,e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%1,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l]" \ The first site http://localhost/zope/ works fine, the second zope (localhost/site/) gives the error --- Temporarily Unavailable The resource you requested is temporarily unavailable - please try again later. In general you should be able to copy a Zope database to a new installation by copying all the var/Data.* files. You shouldn't copy any of those var/pcgi.* files over. Whenever you handle var files you should be aware of permission issues. The rule is that the userid that Zope runs as needs to have read & write permissions to the var directory and all files in it. Another way to upgrade a site is to simply install it over the old site. I believe that this should not overwrite the var/Data.* files. But I'm not totally sure of this, so I would *highly* recommend backing up your var/Data.* files first. -Amos

- On translating Zope into Korean by an awful newbie.

Hi, Zopers! I started translating Zope into Korean. At first, I thought what I would do is trnaslating those English phrase in DTMLs(this seems no problem. diffing & patching is far more simple than I feared). But now I see that there are many English phrases & word in *.py files which appear on the browsing window. Hence I editd a line in lib/python/AccessControl/Role.py for try, i.e. from __ac_roles__=('Manager', 'Anonymous') into __ac_roles__=('관리자', '방문객') (sorry, you can not see Korean characters). Contrary to my expectation, IT WORKS!(at least so far). I did in Red Hat Linux 5.2 with Zope beta 2 Linux Distribution. Getting more corageous, I would try to convert every 'Folder' into '폴더' some day soon. But this hope raises several questions. 1. Is it safe to edit *.py files as I did? 'Manager', 'Folder', etc seems important keywords. Hence I suspect there are some codes which rely on exact forms of such words. 2. If not, how about specifing or seperating into Globals.py such safely-translatable keywords embeded in *.py files? It will accelerate globalizing Zope. Peoples feels more comfort seeing their native language. Even Pope blessed people in their native language many times. BTW, we have cute 'Zope Powered Logo'. So why not do some cosmetics on '(c) Zope' button and credits.html? And it would be better to include the attribution materials in var/data.bbb ready made. so far from the talkative, proudly awful newbie. Kwan-Soo

Okay, just getting independent confirmation that I'm not totally off-base helps. Or at least I'm in good company. At any rate, the round-trip nature of dtml to object methods to dtml to whatever probably makes useful how-to fodder. How will the proposed JimF changes to DocumentTemplate affect this idiom? In general I write methods that should be accessed from the web the same way as you do: def spice(self,salt,pepper,REQUEST=None): "spice the meal" ... if REQUEST is not None: return self.some_dtml_class_attribute(self,REQUEST, message="meal successfully spiced") If there is no need to specifically confirm the spicing operation, you could return a different method, like index_html, the PARENT's index_html, or manage_main, etc. depending on context. If you wanted to you could just have some generic status method that would display the object's current status. Then you could return this method after each invocation of a method that might change the object's state. Figuring out which links to return from methods is a tricky business, and maybe is more fit for a user interface designer than a programmer. However, I seldom find it necessary to redirect the request. I guess it could be necessary if a method creates a new object, and you want to display a method of that object. But then again, you could just call a method on the object and return that... I think the only difference between the two would be the URL displayed and the BASE. - ANN: Zope 1.9b3 released

Hello: Not content with a release every 7 days, this time we've released a new beta in only 6 days ;-) http://www.zope.org/Download/ The main new feature is this beta is the inclusion of SQL Methods. Unfortunately we were only able to finish up the gadfly database adapter by release time. Look for more adapters to appear in the next week starting with MySQL. Also from here on out you should use the Bugs and Features database to submit bugs. http://www.zope.org/Collector/ Hopefully the new bugs database will help us more efficiently identify and fix bugs. <HINT>It can also be used to check if a bug has already been reported.</HINT> Enjoy. -Amos

- BoboPOS problems

Hello Zopistas I created an extension (a hit counter) that includes the class definition in the same source file as the method. After a couple of days ZopeHTTPServer crashed without any apparent reason. On restarting I got the following errors in the server.log file: Traceback (innermost last): File "serve.py", line 99, in ? I assume that the External methods object uses exec to load and store only the function definition into Zope/BoboPOS and not any other code that finds in the source file. I hacked Main.py and included a from Counter import Counter but it did not work. So now I am stuck without Zope :-( Also the change was made 2 days ago and all objects from there on include refrences to the counter object. Am I missing something simple or have I messed things up badly? Pavlos

- Zope site new features

Hi: I just wanted to let you all know that the Zope site is slowly but surely gaining more useful content. Here's a list of some new stuff: - Support area which contains a troubleshooting guide with common problems and solutions. - Bugs and Features database which allows you to view submitted bugs and their status. You can also use it to submit feature and documentation requests. - Documentation is getting reorganized, and now includes a How-To collection with recipes for common or interesting Zope tasks. There's lots more on the way. You can help by pointing out problems, and suggesting new directions. Also, if you figure out how to do something cool or useful, consider writing a couple paragraphs and I'll add it to the How-To collection. Thanks. -Amos

After that, add some methods to allow the information to be seen in DTML. It allows you to package up a whole bunch of objects and install them into the Control Panel as a new kind of thing that can be added. Thus, you might create a Folder with five Documents in it, including a local_html_header. The Documents might point to local_html_header instead of standard_html_header. Once it is installed into the Control Panel, average users see a new option in the add list. A deeper idea that we need to finish up is Zope Classes. This is similar to the Lever, in that you package up things and install them into the Control Panel. However, when new things are made, they retain their connection to the Control Panel. You could thus have central control over local_html_header by going to the Control Panel and managing its copy of the Document.
