Giving Ownership

Hello all, There's an interface available to take ownership of objects if the user has the appropriate permissions. I'd like to give/assign ownership of objects to other users or groups. Is there an easy way to do this? It would be convenient if this functionality was available as an interface to owners of objects. Most of our users are extremely non-technical, therefore they are restricted to very simple web front-ends. TIA Regards, Samir.

Changing owner of a folder object

If I add a folder in my python code as follows (where users is where I wish to create this folder and username is to be the name of the folder): manage_addFolder(users, username, username) How do I go about changing the owner of that folder (to the user named by the 'username' variable)? If 'uF' is a handle to the folder object created above, the method: uF.changeOwnership(username) fails. It appears that changeOwnership() expects an actual user object and not the character string. I then tried using the 'getUser()' method to retrieve the user object associated w/ the name but keep getting NotImplentedErrors. Clearly I'm doing something pretty wrong here - the newest documentation I can find on the subject is the developers guide for Zope 2.4, which perhaps is out of date? Thanks -J

HTTP-Auth Dialog Box Says Zope

Hello, I use a regular user folder for HTTP Authentication. In the IE or Mozilla generated Login Dialog Box, it prints the word Zope above username and password. Where is this in Zope and how can I change it... I have a very novice user audience, and my applications doesn't use any Zope screens, so it could be confusing to my audience. zope @ phpwebhosting

i have an account with phpwebhosting. i was able to install zope but when i runzope it begins @ hostname domo.phpwebhosting.com instead of starting @ mydomain.org in zope.conf i specified in <http-server> address mydomain.org:8080 and still no luck, any pointers?

Catalog problem

Hi all, I have a Zope db that contains several thousand documents all indexed in a single catalog. When I query this catalog in the ZMI, I get results, but when I query this catalog as an anonymous user through a dtml-method, no results are returned. The catalog in question is actually the portal_catalog from a CMF-1.3 and I am curious as to whether or not the allowedRolesAndUsers index is automatically referenced when querying the portal_catalog? Also, when I try and reindex some of the indices, I get a POS key error... Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Well, I will check the options I used to compile python (I think it was default options). But I think that threading is mainly required for the Zope Servers (HTTP, FTP, WEBDAV), which is precisely the part of the functionality we move to Apache in the attempt I did (each child process runs a Zope instance that only has one thread, i.e. that only handles one request at a time and that only has 1 connection to ZEO). Another place where threads were needed is ZODB, but again, in my attempt, ZODB is handled in an external ZEO instance. Yes, I still have a Zeo instance running, because mod_python does not provide a "global" interpreter, so there is no way to give access to a FileStorage (because each child process would try to open/read/write it, so there would be locking problems, etc, on the file). Yup, well, I use the Zope module standard functions to read configuration for a zope.conf file, where I have declared my Zeo server. The main difference between the standard zope.conf file and the one I use it that the Servers (HTTP,WEBDAV,FTP) section is removed. So I guess that a question I will soon hear about will be : how to get WEBDAV/FTP working ? I have no answer, if I needed them, I would keep a separate "real" Zope instance for that purpose I guess, that would connect to Zeo. But it may be possible to do some mod_python handler for WebDav and FTP, as Apache support these protocols, as far as I know. Before submitting a feature+patch on zope.org, I would like to make more tests : + load tests + replace one of our "real" Zope instances by this in our production environment + get more feedback (I have contacted mod_python developper, so he may have a look too) ... But of course, at some point, I do it. About load testing, the first very simple AB test we did : "out-of-the box zope.conf" Zope instance vs. "out-of-the box httpd.conf" Apache2/mod_python/ZopeHandler showed that the later was 2 times faster. But I think I have to make the number of child processes in Apache and the number of connections (both implying the max number of sumultaneous requests that can be handled on both architectures) and then load test again. At least I can say that with Apache2/mod_python/ZopeHandler CPU repartition is much better for multi-cpu servers because each request really runs in a separate OS process. Yes, during the first tests we did at lastminute.com, we saw a better load repartition accross processors on our test servers. This is because each request is handled in a dedicated Apache process, which is linked to an independent python process.
