Yes, I tried the installing the bundle as well as the standalone Archetypes. No luck, Zope still won't start in either case. Removeing the bundle and restoring Archtypes 1.2.5-rc5 and Zope starts normally. I mispoke about my version of python. It is 2.3.3 Is 2.3.4 required for Archtypes 1.3 to work? I'm worried about other things breaking if I install python 2.3.4. This truly is a return to dll hell. general API question

Hello all, I've just started working on zope, coming from java servlet land. so far i'm very happy with my ability to get up and running quickly, its seems to be a great framework that allows very fast development. i am having trouble with the API documentation. i was looking for the full documentation of the request class API, and found this: http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Books/ZopeBook/2_6Edition/AppendixB.stx#2… but this seems to be more an overview than a formal API document. for instance one of the user comments mentions the existance of an attribute called "form" that is a dictionary, and i used it in a script and it worked. but nowhere in the request class documentation does it mention that attribute. i took a guess that if "form" was an attribute, so was "cookies" and sure enough, there it was. is there a more complete API reference available, and if not how can i contribute to the update of the curent API to a more complete status? thanks, dave

Can I use ZODB instead of running MySQL (or equivalent) for holding a simple collection of records? I'm not really sure about the capabilities of ZODB and would appreciate any pointers to docs I should read. -- John

using xml-rpc with javascript to access zope

Help. I am so lost and frustrated. I am using xml-rpc with server-side perl modules and subroutines. But, I do not know how to access these through javascript so I can spit out the results from my zope page template. I have been using a client-side python script to access these subrountines and creating external methods to use them in my zpt, but now I need to use one of these subroutines though an 'onclick'. And of course, I have learned the hard way that zope can not be accessed directly through javascript. I have also been told that Epoz uses javascript in this way but after looking at Epoz I am completely lost and do not know where to start. I am hoping that someone knows a simple or basic way of doing this for someone like me that is a new programmer. Thank You.

LDAPUserSatellite - Misunderstood usage?

Hello, I've been trying to find a description of how the LDAPUserSatellite objects in the LDAPUserFolder Product actually should be used. I've read the included docs and google searched for answers, but can't find what I'm looking for. Basically I've got a large directory of users, and want to give some additional roles in some subfolders of my site. I have a single subfolder below the Zope root housing my site, which contains an LDAPUserFolder connected to this directory, with the original user folder still in place, with one user (admin). I don't have write access to the directory I'm authenticating against (the directory is operated by my school), so I've got LDAP group status stored locally in the LDAPUserFolder, and read-only set on the directory. When I map a group to a role in the LDAPUserFolder itself, the users in the group get that role for the whole site. My understanding from the docs I have found is that if I create a satellite in a subfolder, then I can map groups to roles there, and then those mappings will be in effect for that subfolder. This does not seem to be working. Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong, or where my understanding might be flawed? -- Chris Connett

triggering Python socket code from Zope

I'm going to need to pass some status messages to a business partner over UDP. I've already written that Python code. At the moment it's intended to be called from various batch scripts. But the partner also wants one particular message to be triggered from a process that happens via web form. Am I going to have to turn the underlying code into a Product? Or is a Python Script going to be sufficient? Are there sandbox issues? (The code does some file reading and writing, uses struct.pack(), uses string.strip(), time.time()...)

<rant> This is such a bunch of bullshit. I am so tired of "the answer is out there somewhere, why can't you find it yourself?" being the justification for not helping people who ask reasonable questions. To add insult to injury Asad was being quite courteous (e.g. he went so far as to thank you for your initial response) and you guys just start jumping all over him. Please explain to me why the mailing list should be a solution-of-last-result??? After all, you can find the solution to every question by looking at the Zope source code...ergo, all questions to the mailing list are a waste of time because the person didn't have the time to go picking through the source code? Personally, I am more than happy to help people with questions if I know the answer off the top of my head. ***What is the big deal?!?*** Just because the answer exists somewhere doesn't mean I expect people to spend lots of their time (**which is valuable too by the way**) to go digging it out. Zope (and Plone) are very complicated systems and not all of us hack the source code to Zope on a daily basis so we don't know all the "ins and outs". If you consider it a waste of your time to answer our questions then DON'T, but there is no need to insult us. I don't know if you noticed but they don't exactly have the mindshare or marketshare of other solutions and I don't think that is likely to change when people come here looking for answers and get nothing but grief. I've said it many times before...if you can't be constructive just don't say anything. You are poisoning this community with this nonsense.
