Basic Security question

I thought I understood permissions and roles, but... I have a folder ('Data') with the 'View' security role set to 'Authenticated', and 'Acquire Permissions' is NOT checked for 'View'. When, as an 'anonymous' user, I try to access an object within the 'Data' folder the security popup window (enter your name/password) is displayed. This works as I expected it to. I have created a dtml method called 'Display'. This test routine is hardcoded to display an object from the 'Data' folder. I have set the Proxy role for the Display method to "Authenticated". When, as an 'anonymous' user, I access the 'Display' method the security popup window appears?! Shouldn't the Proxy role assigned to the dtml method enable access to the object in the folder? Any and all help appreciated! Jonathan

Copy the url from the address bar and paste it into your rss reader (or the reader's code if that is how you are trying to get the page). However, I have seen at least one reader that did not store the port when it saved the url of an rss feed. That was frustrating because the feed would initially work, but later would fail. So this would be something to check on as well. You could check this by moving your server to port 80, if nothing else is already using the port. Cheers, Tom P

In this case I don't think either response is in play. The usual way to try to get an rss file for a page for testing is to get the page up in a browser, then add /RSS to the url. So almost certainly the OP's url is talking to the right port on his server. I suspect (but of course who knows for sure?) that the response in a poorly-chosen error message arising from the rss reader's inability to deal with the authentication request from the server. OP, you need to enlighten us as to whether you really are addressing the right port in your reader! Cheers, Tom P

Problems migrating from CGI to Apache proxying

I'm upgrading a FreeBSD 5-CURRENT server to run Zope 2.7 from 2.6. My old setup used a lot of RewriteRules to shunt requests to Zope.cgi, but I've seen the light and have migrated almost all of my sites to use Apache's reverse proxying instead. My problem is that I have a couple of sites where Zope handles the root directory, but other applications (mainly in PHP) serve particular subdirectories. For example, I have something like: # Audio stuff RewriteRule ^/audio$ - [l] RewriteRule ^/audio/ - [l] # Squirrelmail RewriteRule ^/squirrel/ - [l] RewriteRule ^/squirrel$ - [l] # Mailman RewriteRule ^/mailman/ - [l] RewriteRule ^/mailman$ - [l] RewriteRule ^/pipermail/ - [l] RewriteRule ^/pipermail$ - [l] RewriteCond %{HTTP:Authorization} ^(.*) RewriteRule^/Example.com(.*) /usr/local/www/cgi-bin.default/Zope.cgi/Example.com$1 [e=HTTP_CGI_AUTHORIZATION:%2,t=application/x-httpd-cgi,l] I need to do something similar in my new setup. I have had this happen to me - access to the rss file required a login and the rss reader was unable to cope with it. Now just *why* it required a login when I had set all the permissions I could find to "anonymous" and the state to "published" I never figured out. An apparently identical setup on another machine did not have this problem. So a mystery remains ... Cheers, Tom P

TAL: Replacing an attribute in a macro call

I have a macro defined for a "select" item that I now would like to put twice in my page. This means I need to have to different names for the items, but I can't seem to figure out how to change an attribute while calling a macro. My macro definition looks like this: <select metal:define-macro="user" name="user" tal:define="items python:container.function()"> <div tal:repeat="option items" tal:omit-tag=""> <option tal:content="option/data">Call Type</option> </div> </select> What I had hoped I could do is use the macro like this: <select metal:use-macro="container/selects/macros/user" name="somethingelse"> ... </select> but this doesn't work as the macro overwrites that attribute with its own (which makes sense). I have tried leaving the name undefined in the macro, but it then renders without a name. What is the "correct", or at least idiomatic way to do this? Thanks, Mark Roach
