Dennis, This is in direct correlation with the check interval suggestion I made. In your search, you will find that on SMTP systems, tweaking the check interval can help things, precisely because of the GIL. I set it to zero because I had the spare CPU power, and trying to fully understand/benchmark python's behavior on SMTP seemed like too much work :P J.F. -----Original Message----- From: zope-bounces(a)zope.org [mailto:zope-bounces@zope.org]On Behalf Of Dennis Allison Sent: Tuesday, March 23, 2004 10:39 AM To: Chris Withers Cc: zope(a)zope.org Subject: Re: [Zope] strange performance problem Thanks. Generate PDF with Zope
by Pascal Francq 23 Mar '04

23 Mar '04

Hi, I want to generate PDF document from within Zope. What is the easiest way to do it? I know there is a python package (reportlab) which provides functions to create PDF documents, but I am not sure it is the right solution for Zope. -- Prof. Pascal Francq Université Libre de Bruxelles CAD/CAM Department Avenue F.D. Running Zope with less memory usage
by Peter Bengtsson 23 Mar '04

23 Mar '04

I'm running one of my zope servers (2.7.0b3) on a very slow celeron 500Mhz with <200Mb RAM. It also runs Postgresql, apache and Squid, but Zope takes by far the most amount of memory. What configurations can I make to limit Zope to use less memory? -- Peter Bengtsson, http://www.peterbe.com

strange performance problem
by Dennis Allison 23 Mar '04

23 Mar '04

This has the characteristics of a network problem, but it may be somewhere else. Users report that the system just seems to stop responding for a few seconds, then recovers. Of course, I've not been able to reproduce the problem nor isolate a command sequence that triggers it, but I am convinced that it's real. This, BTW, happens on a lightly loaded machine with no apparent resource problems. Any thoughts, pointers, or techniques to isolate the problem would be appreciated. Oh, yes, the environment.. Dual Athlon Barton Stepping CPUs AMD2600, Tyan Tiger Motherboard, 4GB memory, 4x120 3Ware RAID 10, ethernet feed. RH7.3 OS, Python 2.3.1, Zope 2.6.2b3. Any help appreciate. -dra

Zope Version
by John Poltorak 23 Mar '04

Can someone running Zope 2.7.0 post what is shown under the control panel? I've just managed to get it running but it is shown as an unreleased version:- The Control Panel provides access to system information and management functions such as database and product management. Zope Version (unreleased version, python 2.3.3, os2emx) Python Version 2.3.3 (#0, Dec 21 2003, 23:43:28) [EMX GCC 2.8.1] System Platform os2emx SOFTWARE_HOME /usr/local/python/Lib/python ZOPE_HOME /usr/local/python INSTANCE_HOME /zope CLIENT_HOME /zope/var Network Services ZServer.HTTPServer.zhttp_server (Port: 8080) ZServer.FTPServer.FTPServer (Port: 8021) Process Id 7808 (3) Running For 12 hours 19 min 3 sec It appears to have been installed in the wrong place, at least I wouldn't have expected it to get installed under /usr/local/python. Also, there is no Restart button next to the Shutdown button. Is this normal? -- John

How to limit types of classes added to a Folder
by Russell Fine 23 Mar '04

23 Mar '04

I'm building a class (Site) that contains a Folder (Called screenshots) in which I will be storing instances of a class I've built called ScreenShot. The problem is that I can't figure out how to make the Folder interface in the ZMI limit the instance types to ScreenShot. In the Site class __init__ method, I have : OFS.Folder.manage_addFolder(self, 'screenshots', 'Screen Shots') self.screenshots.meta_types=('ScreenShot') However, this isn't working. I looked into the Folder class, and discovered that it's base class ObjectManager has a class property (not instance) called meta-types that is a tuple. do I need to sub-class Folder and set meta_types at the class level ? Programmatically deleting objects
by Horak, Karl 23 Mar '04

23 Mar '04

I am attempting to let users delete their own documents from a treeview, if they wish. For this I call manage_delObjects with a list of the item to be deleted. I find that manage_delObjects I get (in my current version) an endless loop of Sending request to server... Transferring data from server.... My DTML method, based on the ZMI method for deleting checked items in a tree, looks like this: <form action="." name="objectItems" method="post"> <table width="50%"> <tr> <dtml-tree branches="publicObjects" skip_unauthorized="1" sort="title_or_id"> <td> <dtml-if expr="meta_type == 'Folder'"><B></dtml-if> <IMG SRC="<dtml-var icon>"> <dtml-var title_or_id> <dtml-if expr="meta_type == 'Folder'"></B></dtml-if> </td> <dtml-if expr="meta_type != 'Folder'"> <td width="16%"><input type="checkbox" name="ids:list" value="<dtml-var id>" /></td> </dtml-if> </dtml-tree> </tr> </table> <input class="form-element" type="submit" name="manage_delObjects:method" value="Delete" /> </form> <dtml-var standard_html_footer> What is causing the spinning Zope when this is submitted? Debugging suggestions would be appreciated because <dtml-var REQUEST> is showing everything as it should. Karl

REQUEST actions
by AP Meyer 23 Mar '04

23 Mar '04

Dear Zopers Here is another question that I cannot find a satisfying solution for. The situation is that I have a ZPT with a list (batched table) from which I can select items to edit and add there is a button to add new items. This button is part of a form like this: <form action="." method="post"> <p> <input type="submit" name="delItems:method" value="Delete Poets"/> <input type="submit" name="manage_addItemForm:method" value="Add Item"/> </p> ... </form> Pressing the "Add Item" button invokes the manage_addItemForm and modifies the URL in the REQUEST object accordingly. On that form one can enter all item details and press an "Add Item" button that is programmed like this: <form method="post" action="addItem"> <table> <tr> <th class="left">Name</th> <td><input type="text" name="title" size="72"/></td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan=2 align="center"><input type="submit" value="Add Item"/></td> </tr> </table> </form> This still works fine and calls the appropriate method in the Product's class. That method looks like this: def addItem(self, title, REQUEST=None): "Method to add an item." id = self.newId() item = Item(id, title) self.Library._setObject(id, item) if REQUEST is not None: return self.listItems(REQUEST) def listItems(self, REQUEST=None): "Method to list items." _request = {'meta_type':category} _results = self.Catalog.search(_request) if REQUEST is not None: REQUEST['results'] = _results return self.index_items(self, REQUEST) # <<< this does not modify REQUEST! else: return _results This still works well so far. The problem occurs here, however, that the URL of the REQUEST object is not modified as it is when using a form. It still contains the "addItem" action and its parameters (in QUERY_STRING) instead of "listItems". As a result, when the table is sorted, for example, the same item is added again !!! How can this behaviour be prevented or fixed such that the REQUEST contains the right information? your help is appreciated, many thanks Andre -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The disclaimer that applies to e-mail from TNO Physics and Electronics Laboratory can be found on: http://www.tno.nl/disclaimer/email.html ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
