Apache being troublesome (correction of typo)
by mh 11 Dec '03

Hello, I'm a new user to Zope and I've got Apache more or less configured to work as a proxy, but it works only for requests in the top level of a particular domain. My httpd.conf is thus: <VirtualHost 216.127.74.118> ServerName external_name.com RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^/(.*) \ http://www.external_name.com:8080/internal_name.com/www/$1 [P] </VirtualHost> Requests for (say) www.external_name/img/img.gif get rewritten as referring to www.external_name.com:8080/img/img.gif which isn't really useful. Whilst this is strictly speaking an Apache issue and not Zope, I'm sure I'm not the first to come across this problem with Apache proxying to Zope. mod_rewrite was compiled into httpd especially for Zope, so the above is my entire experience with it. Any hints very much appreciated!

Most likely culprit on an RH9 system then is that you're running the original RH9 glibc library. There is a problem with the glibc version released with RH9 that can cause siimilar behaviour, I found that updating the glibc and recompiling zope and python fixed it on my system. If your glibc is not current you should update it, there are several mentions of the glibc problem and fix in the list's archives if you need more details. Have you tried doing direct access to your Zope Server via http://127.0.0.1:8081 If so what is the result? ># install zope 2.6.2 > > cd /usr/local/zope > > wget http://zope.org/Products/Zope/2.6.2/Zope-2.6.2-src.tgz > > tar xzvf Zope-2.6.2-src.tgz > > cd Zope-2.6.2-src > > /usr/local/zope/python-2.1.3/bin/python wo_pcgi.py If I remember correctly doesn't the wo_pcgi stand for "without PCGI"?? If so that may be why PCGI isn't firing up. If you're dead set on using PCGI you should be able to rebuild the server to run with PCGI, but you're probably better off without it. PCGI is alot slower than other options like VirtualHostMonster. Lee _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. Zope broken - can't restart
by Dennis Godfrey 10 Dec '03

10 Dec '03

I added a package to the Products directory today. When I tried to restart, I got a Proxy error and things went downhill quickly. We are using debian testing (running zope on port 9673) Zope 2.6.2 Starting it and restarting it give differing errors: collab:/var/log/zope/default# /etc/init.d/zope start Starting Zope instance default... failed: coercing to Unicode: need string or buffer, NoneType found Waiting instances in late: done. default: start: coercing to Unicode: need string or buffer, NoneType found collab:/var/log/zope/default# /etc/init.d/zope restart Restarting Zope instance default... failed: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'rfind' Waiting instances in late: done. default: restart: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'rfind' Does anyone know what "'NoneType' object has no attribute 'rfind'" means? How about "coercing to Unicode: need string or buffer, NoneType found"? Can anyone give me a clue as to how I can get zope running again? Thanks! dennis - have gudulka, will travel http://KafanaKlub.com

acl_users in plone sub folders
by Jon Pace 10 Dec '03

10 Dec '03

I'd like to take advantage of Zope's ability to have separate acl_user folders in sub folders to manage security in Plone 2.0 RC2. I'ved tried adding acl_users in a sub folder but Plone doesn't seem to recognize the users. Anyone have any ideas on if and how this can work? Does anyone know of a good solution to give certain users full access to some folders but no access to others without creating a large administrative burden?

zope freezes/halts after loading initial page
by Geoffrey Jost 10 Dec '03

Hello zope.org, i'm trying to install zope/plone on a Red Hat 9.0 system, but the system never manages to start up. it shows the initial page (sometimes with the Zope graphic, sometimes without), but never manages to fully load the /manage pages. on the console, i see the following when i start up (notice how the "ZServer PCGI Server started" line fails to appear): [zope@redhatdev Zope-2.6.2-src]$ ./start -w 8081 -D ------ 2003-12-10T11:47:51 INFO(0) zdaemon Started subprocess: pid 7132 ------ 2003-12-10T11:47:52 INFO(0) ZODB Opening database for mounting: '145055912_1071084405.117667' ------ 2003-12-10T11:47:52 INFO(0) ZODB Mounted database '145055912_1071084405.117667' at /temp_folder ------ 2003-12-10T11:47:52 INFO(0) ZServer HTTP server started at Wed Dec 10 11:47:52 2003 Hostname: redhatdev Port: 8081 ------ 2003-12-10T11:47:52 INFO(0) ZServer FTP server started at Wed Dec 10 11:47:52 2003 Hostname: redhatdev Port: 8021 i initially tried to install the zope binary, but this didn't work so i tried the source install. i used the following install sequence (taken from http://zope.org/Documentation/Books/ZopeBook/2_6Edition/InstallingZope.stx) # prep install location > mkdir /usr/local/zope > chown -R zope zope > chgrp -R web zope > chmod -R 775 zope > cd /usr/local/zope # install python 2.1.3 > mkdir /usr/local/zope/python-2.1.3 > wget http://python.org/ftp/python/2.1.3/Python-2.1.3.tgz > tar xzvf Python-2.1.3.tgz > cd Python-2.1.3 > ./configure --prefix /usr/local/zope/python-2.1.3 configure > make > make install # install zope 2.6.2 > cd /usr/local/zope > wget http://zope.org/Products/Zope/2.6.2/Zope-2.6.2-src.tgz > tar xzvf Zope-2.6.2-src.tgz > cd Zope-2.6.2-src > /usr/local/zope/python-2.1.3/bin/python wo_pcgi.py thanks in advance for your assistance! Zope Dies Mysteriously After A Few Days. How Do I Investigate Zope's Death?
by Jonathan Mark 10 Dec '03

10 Dec '03

My new goodbyejim.com site runs Zope 2.6 and Python 2.1 on Redhat 7.3 It uses Squishdot. Ever since I fired the site up a few weeks ago it has been dying mysteriously every few days. When I look in the var/Z2.log file there is no evidence that anything went wrong. If I then run the stop script it says that Zope is not running. I can then always restart Zope using the start script without problem. If I run the uptime Unix command I find that the Linux box itself has been running without problem. What could be causing my Zope to die? How do I investigate it? __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! Photos - easier uploading and sharing. http://photos.yahoo.com/

exUserFolder writing on ZODB
by Garikoitz Araolaza 10 Dec '03

10 Dec '03

Hi! We recently switched to an exUserFolder+MySQL authenticating system because we wanted to avoid user information to be written on ZODB. The problem is that now when a user signs in (above 4000 users) something is being written in the ZODB, (I see it in /manage_UndoForm ) what is exactly what we were trying to avoid... Any switch has to be activated or configured? Any hint will be appreciated.
