DCOracle - Oracle8i - Again [Q]

Hi! I managed to compile DCOracle with Oracle 8i on my Sparc. I took some comments made to the list to month ago... But now I am having a diferent trouble. After compiling I want to test the DCOracle and I am getting the following error with the 'python DCOracle_test.py user/pass@sid' command: Traceback (innermost last): File "DCOracle_test.py", line 1, in ? import Buffer, oci_, sys ImportError: ld.so.1: python: fatal: relocation error: file ./oci_.so: symbol nnfyboot: referenced symbol not found Any help will be appreciated. Conditional variable setting

Hi, I need to be able to conditionally set some text. Here is my existing code. What I'd prefer to be able to do is avoid both the dtml-with and the REQUEST.set. I hope I can at least avoid the latter. Can you tell me how? I cannot figure out how to add on to the existing string -- there seems to be no concatenate option and <dtml-call "displaytext = displaytext + 'blah'"> only gives an error. how to block until an image is done uploading?

Hello. I've got some code (I've included the code below) that lets the user upload an image. It then store the image twice - one in its normal form and the other as a thumbnail (generated via PIL). The problem is, when the image is large I sometimes get errors. The problem, I think, is that when I retrieve the data from the image in order to thumbnailize it all of the data is not available yet and PIL throws an IOError saying the image is truncated. Small images work fine. I did a print of len(image_data) and it is smaller than it should be. However, eventually all of the data must become available because the non thumbnail image show up just fine. So, can anyone say if I have diagnosed the problem right and if so how can I force things to wait until the upload is finished? I've tried just using a sleep, but that didn't work. No matter how long the sleep, I still get the error. Zope and BSDI 4.0 compile failure

I'm trying to install Zope on a BSDI 4.0 machine running Python 1.5.2. When I compile, I get lots of "undefined reference to" error messages and the compile stops. Looking at the FAQ page there is a reference to adding -rdynamic to the LDSHARED variable in the Makefile.pre.in files. This makes no sense to me, since as far as I can see when the make -f Makefile.pre.in boot is done the file referenced is the existing Makefile in the <pythonlib>/config directory, and so changes to LDSHARED in the distributed Makefile.pre.in files should have no effect on the install. I tried it anyway but it didn't seem to make any difference to the 'python w_pcgi.py' run. So I tried adding -rdynamic to the <pythonlib>/config/Makefile LDSHARED, and that didn't work either. I got: ld -rdynamic ExtensionClass.o -o ExtensionClass.so ld: no input files Since according to the ld man page -r doesn't take an argument and -rdynamic isn't a valid argument, I'm not quite sure what is going on. So I tried just -r (make the compiled module relocatable; sounds reasonable), and that got the compile to complete. However, now when I run ./start, I get: /usr/local/bin/python: '/usr/local/src/zope/Zope-2.0.1-src/lib/python/ExtensionClass.so' is not an ELF executable for 386/486 No big surprise there either. I tried -Bdynamic. No go there either. I also tried the -k, but the modules don't get made so I get an error that they are missing when I try to start zope. So, am I missing something obvious, or does anyone know what combination of options I need to get this thing to compile properly? Is it something new about BSDI 4.0 vs 3.0 that is causing this problem? It *looks* like a problem with python's config support for dynamic modules under BSDI, but I couldn't find anything on the Python website or list archives, and obviously I don't know enough about python modules or Unix linking to figure this out. --RDM

In a word: RAM. Sort of increasing processor speed, more memory is your better option. I have seen Zope use upwards of around 30-40 MB+ at times. For Database loading speed, it is kind of a trick. You only use it when loading and packing the database (AFAIK). The larger the site, and hence Data.fs, the more important it is. Then again, the more important memory becomes. Not trying to start an OS war, but: In the above machine examples, you would getter better performance by running Linux on the server, as it would allow you to avoid the overhead of a graphics system, use less memory, and more efficiently manage the memory you have. But this is generally true of servers, graphic systems by nature increase the memory needed. When you have a quarter gig of memory ona screaming machine, it is less of an issue, but in the examples you cited, a graphical interface taking up all or half of your ram is definitely an issue. On my p133, performance is definitely respectable, even though I am running 4 Zservers and squid over a DSL connection. As the sites get larger (or I can afford to) I will be replacing it with a much faster dual cpu system. I currently run two on dual pIIs w/256M and peformance is outstanding. Thus, I would say that it is hardware limitations in my case, not Zope itsself. I think many people tend to go overboard in their expectations. Zope is a dynamic appserver, not a static file server over http. Many people try to compare the two, and I do not consider it a valid comparison. It is like saying that a stripped-down-for-racing 'stock car' can be copared to the same 'model' of car on the street for speed. FWIW, I tried the LocalFS product, and it served up local files at a significant speed improvement, thus illustrating my point. In fact, I am contemplating the use of the LocalFS product for the basically static pages that I have on some sites to take advantage of this. DCOracle - Oracle 8i - Solaris Sparc [Q]

Hi! I am trying to compile the DCOracle (the one that comes with ZOracleDA 2.1.0) on a Solaris machine. I am running Solaris7 with all the patches, Oracle 8i, Python 1.5.2 and Zope 2.0.1 When compiling I get that all the libs (the ones that are in the form -lnetwork -lcore4 etc...) are unknown. The Oracle software is working correctly, all the env vars are set, and I have tryied the same procedure on a Linux (redhat 5.2) machine running Oracle 8.0.5 and it worked. Is there so much difference between Oracle 8i (version 8.1.5) and Oracle 8.0.5 that I cannot get the DCOracle module to compile? I really need this working, so if anyone has any comment or answer, please... :-) TIA /B Bruno

Hi, Liz Sorry I didn't respond to this earlier... it's been crazy. Assuming you didn't make any changes to the KMNN that you have, you should be able to delete the old product, then install the new one. When you delete the product, your KMArticleStore and KMArticles will be broken (because the ZClasses will be missing). But, when you install the new version, the class-id is the same, so your instances will start working again. As always, though, make a backup of your Data.fs in case something goes awry :) These should be undoable changes to the ZODB though. The upgrade should be relatively painless. The thing I haven't figured out is a good way to upgrade when you've actually made changes to the product. Maybe there should be one product that defines ZClass base classes and another that wraps those. You create instances of the wrapper objects, and make your changes to the wrappers. That way, you can plug in new base classes without interfering with your changes. I haven't tried any of that though. Good luck!
