Michel Pelletier wrote a message a few weeks back that explained things nicely. Basically, the first parameter is the "target" object (not sure if that's the right word), and the second parameter is the namespace. <dtml-if "some_condition"> <dtml-var "render_item(_.None, _, input_var1='value1')"> <dtml-else> <dtml-var "render_item(_.None, _, input_var1='value2')"> </dtml-if> Should do what you're looking for. Note that you don't need to pass REQUEST in, because it is a part of the namespace. Kevin

I think Edd does indeed mean reading in an RSS file from somewhere and publishing the headlines. As far as copyright goes, if someone is providing an RSS file, I think the intention is to allow people to list their news headlines on their own sites. This is not the same as putting the articles on your site though. This is just summary information. Companies like Reuters probably would not offer an RSS file. But, there are many, many sites that do (just see my.userland.com or the channels available for My Netscape). To an extent, the tools to display RSS files are already available... There's urllib for grabbing the files and XMLDocument for providing access to the information contained within them. If people are doing a lot of RSS syndication, it may be good to have an object specifically designed for easy manipulation of RSS. But, for now, it seems like the tools that exist are pretty powerful. Kevin

RDF and Zope

Hi everyone, I've spend the last couple hours trying to wrap my brain around the W3C's RDF spec. I actually just finished reading Tim Berners-Lee's new book which mentions RDF. Anyway, I'm wondering what, if any, relevance this has for Zope. Is there anyone who would be willing to offer some comments? My own thinking began as I considered how to display news headlines from different sites on my Zope site. After doing some reading I learned that RDF seems to provide some mechanism for making that easier. I really don't understand it yet, but it seems like some important work. How quickly does zope respond.

I am wondering how fast zope responds for others, and what tips you have to improve regular performance (hardware, software, config). When you start with a fresh Zope install, how many seconds (from mouse click) does it take: 1. To boot Zope 2. To enter the manage interface 2. To open index_html 3. To save the changes 4. To View this 5. Ditto for image uploads (say with 8K, 32K, and 64k Jpegs) What's your best? What's your worst? Can you suggest an approach to build in this kind of local-action performance checking via a DTML method which uses timestamps comparison. For example a method which I can toggle on and off at different levels of the hierarchy to create a history file of certain actions. Does this already exist? I've am testing Zope on two 'minimal platform PCs to check performance I can expect for clients in an upcoming project who I know will _not_ have the latest and best systems. My two current 'test' machines are: 1. P5-150Mhz,64Mb, Win95b 2. P233mhzmmx, 32mb, Win95b -laptop I've been experimenting with these in 3 ways: with Zope local to each machine, over a small ethernet LAN and remote over 56k modem to hosted Zope site (codeit). This is the other 'end' of the discussion I've been following about server performance. displaying headlines

Hi everyone, Has anyone developed a product that allows you to display current headlines from AP, CNN, or some other source on a Zope site? If not, does anyone know of a news source that makes its headlines available in some easily parsable form so that I can do it myself? One of our two local papers (Minneapolis Star Tribune) gave me permission to do it, but I would have to dig them out of their homepage. DTML Namespace confusion

Hi all, After reading the DTML namespace how-tos, I have to admit that I'm still somewhat confused by it -- especially on how to call another DTML method from another DTML method and pass the namespaces from one to another. I know this is probably a question that's been asked before, but after searching through all archives and Zope documentation, I haven't found a solution :(. For example, I have this simple folder structure: /myFolder (folder) /index_html (dtml method) /render_item (dtml method) where render_item is called by index_html several times but with slightly different parameters. I've been able to make it work by doing a call to "REQUEST.set" and set my input parameters accordingly like this (index_html): ... <dtml-if "some_condition"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('input_var1','value1')"> <dtml-else> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('input_var1','value2')"> </dtml-if> <dtml-var render_item> ... But what I would really like to do is this: <dtml-if "some_condition"> <dtml-var "render_item(_,_.None,REQUEST,input_var1='value1')"> <dtml-else> <dtml-var "render_item(_,_.None,REQUEST,input_var1='value2')"> </dtml-if> I've tried the code above (this is something that I've seen in the archives) but it gives me back an error about the title key error(a property in myFolder) which is the first dtml variable displayed on render_item: ....<snip> Error Type: KeyError Error Value: title ...<snip> File C:\myzope.com\lib\python\DocumentTemplate\DT_Util.py, line 321, in eval (Object: render_item(_, _.None, REQUEST, render_format='default' )) File <string>, line 0, in ? ...<snip> So my question is: What are the (????) parameters make that make an exact equivalent (namespace stack-wise) of calling this: <dtml-var render_item> in terms of this?: <dtml-var "render_item(?????)"> And can I tack on my own namespace by passing it my own variables like this?: <dtml-var "render_item(?????,input_var1='input_value1')"> Hope my question is clear enough for an answer. AttributeError .. __call__

Hello, just as I thought that I had understood the acquisition concept (and successfully created some methods that do what I want) I encountered another problem: for testing i have the following infrastructure: /site/programm/index_html /show_vars (DTML Doc.) show_vars: Folder: <dtml-var title> <dtml-in "programm.objectValues(['DTML Document'])"> DTML Document: <dtml-var title_or_id> </dtml-in> or <dtml-with programm> Folder: <dtml-var title> <dtml-in "objectValues(['DTML Document'])"> DTML Document: <dtml-var title_or_id> </dtml-in> </dtml-with> now the request "http://localhost:8080/site/show_vars" works but http://localhost:8080/site/programm/show_vars doesn't. I thought that the second request would acquire the namespace of its parents, namely "/site/" and thus be able to find the requested object. (as it does with the "show_vars" object) However I get this error: Error Type: AttributeError Error Value: __call__ ... what am I doing wrong this time? Oliver
