[Q] Design decisions: the use of ZCatalogs versus a backend DB?

Toying with ZCatalogs, I am starting to wonder if many of the uses I envisioned are not better served with a backend database. For example, for a publication database where nearly all of the instance data needs to be indexed (author, title, journal, year), this results in near total duplication of the instance data within the catalog. It seems that ZCatalogs are meant to be used if (i) only a fraction of the instance data needs to be indexed, or (ii) the dataset is small enough that one can live with the duplication. As another example, consider a catalog of URLs (descriptor, link, creation_date) gleaned from a URLClass ZClass. Here we might have hundreds of URLClass instances peppered throughout user folders and all of the data needs to be indexed. Is the overhead of object creation and duplication within the catalog better served with a simple backend database? Darran.

Why promote the  syntax?

I understand the need to continue supporting the old style DTML tag syntax . But why promote its continued use by having all the default documents and methods that Zope generates use this rather than the cleaner Zope2 <dtml-> syntax? Cheers, Darran.

Documentation brokeness

Heydliho. The postscript documentation on the web site is broken in as much as they are actually postscript docs wrapped in pcl. On the printers I have around here (Apple 16/600 and a Xerox Docu something or other) the pcl handling means these docs print out the postscript as plain text. ;) It took many pained hours to figure this out, but once I did I just grabbed the pdf's and made compliant PS files ;) It would be preferable if you guys shipped PS files without the PCL wrapping in both Letter and A4 sizes ... brett -- email: Brett.Morgan(a)uts.edu.au phone: +61-2-9514-2091 Scotty: Captain, we din' can reference it! dtml-tree and Z SQL methods

Does anyone know how to display hierarchical content from SQL? I was hoping to find the answer in the "Secrets of working with the tree tag"-HOWTO but appearently it's not yet in there. What I have in (My)SQL is a table with: cont_id - Unique ID (primary key) of a container upper_id - ID of the upper container or NULL (the container containing this container;) description - text to be displayed describing the container Ragnar Beer

inheritedAttribute?

I was looking through some Zope Python code and noticed several places where something like Foo.inheritedAttribute(...) was used. Can someone explain what this does? I didn't find a definition for a method named inheritedAttribute so I'm a bit confused as to what this is doing. Thanks. Adding ZClass from inside of a ZClass

I have a ZClass which inherits from ObjectManager. When I create an instance of this ZClass, I also want to automatically create an instance of another ZClass that I have created. I've looked at the How To on doing this but things aren't working quite right. When I add my new instance of my ZClass ObjectManager, my second ZClass gets added not to my new ZClass instance, but the folder which contains the new ZClass instance. In other words, what I wanted to get was: FolderA ZClass1 ZClass2 but I'm getting: FolderA ZClass1 ZClass2 the Add method for ZClass1 looks like this: <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('id', 'some id for ZClass1')"> <dtml-with "ZClass1.createInObjectManager(REQUEST['id'], REQUEST)"> <dtml-call "propertysheets.instanceProperties.manage_editProperties(REQUEST)"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('id', 'some id for ZClass2')"> [... other stuff ...] <dtml-call "ZClass2_add(_.None, _, NoRedir=1)"> </dtml-with> <dtml-if NoRedir> <dtml-else> <dtml-if DestinationURL> [... standard stuff ...] </dtml-if> </dtml-if> What trick am I missing?
