Hi all, I will be giving a talk at the Zope Track at IPC8 on the future directions of Zope. The format will be about half me babbling about our broad future plans and half Q & A. I would like to make sure that I cover the things that the zopista community cares about in the first part, so I'm putting out a call for you to chime in and let me know what topics are important to you. I maybe wrong (its been a while since I did the tutorial) but IIRC, one of the downsides of this process was that it produced a "closed box" product and doesn't leave you a way to see or modify those components included in the package. Also, IIRC, it doesn't have checks for ZClass/Product dependencies. That said, I think we have 2 alternatives: 1. We could enhance this distribution tab so that it accomplishes the objectives set forth for the ZopePackManager product: a. Be able to specify the ZClasses, instance data (e.g. Folders) & ZProducts(?) that are to be included in the application b. Be able to create products that recreate the included ZClasses & instance data in their original format (i.e. open-box format) so that users can further tailor the default behavior of the distributed application to each site's needs... c. Zope Product installation should be able to do some dependency checking so that installation is as error-free as possible. d. Zope Products created this way should be able to share ZClasses between different distributions and load them as necessary (and only when necessary) -- this will make each distribution smaller (because you only include those ZClasses/instance data you supply) & also make the Zope Products namespace less cluttered. e. Be able to enter and retrieve additional info (e.g. product categories, product description) about each product so that users have an ability to pick and choose intelligently which applications they might wish to install... 2. Continue development of the "ZopePack" manager product but incorporate the current "distribution tab" concepts in building the product -- i.e. aside from making the distribution/installation of ZClass based applications easier(my main objective) -- also include the code to make it easy to build a ZopePack (e.g. checking dependencies and automatically determining the dependency data that needs to be included in the ZopePack "meta-file") Also, its nice to know that there's already code inside the Zope machinery that could build ".tar.gz" files -- we can probably automate not just the installation of Zope Products very easy, but also the converse process of "building" a distribution a "one-or-two-click, platform-independent" process as well... Since I don't have a clue as to how much work the first approach will entail, I'd like to get people's opinions... In the end, both these approaches solve the problem equally well -- the only question is: which one looks easier to do? data.fs flushing

OK, here's my situation. I'm running a windows 98 machine (i.e., not very stable) with multiple windows users. Therefore, the current user occasionally gets logged out, or the machine itself crashes, killing the zope process. The server does generally get restarted, so uptime is not a problem with this setup. Since the database appears to only be saved to disk during a shutdown or a pack, this basically means that at irregular (but frequent) times out of my control, the database can be easily lost. The person logging out of the current account does not have (nor should have) the access to Zope's management interface needed to do a shutdown on the server or a pack of the database. Since I have set up the ability for some remote users to do some content management, and they might do this at literally any time without my knowledge, this is a problem. Even the logs do not help; the logs apparently disappear in such a situation (not tested fully), so I have no way of knowing even THAT the users have changed something, much less what. What I basically am wondering is if there is a way to force Zope to flush the database to disk at periodic intervals, whether by packing the database (undo is not as important to me as not having unknown amounts of data disappear entirely into the bit bucket when there is a problem) or by forcing a flush in some other way I found this little snippet in ApplicationManager.py, but I'm not sure what to do with it exactly, or even if this is the best place to start twiddling around with the source: def manage_shutdown(self): """Shut down the application""" for db in Globals.opened: db.close() sys.exit(0) def manage_pack(self, days=0, REQUEST=None): """Pack the database""" t=time.time()-days*86400 db=self._p_jar.db() t=db.pack(t) if REQUEST is not None: REQUEST['RESPONSE'].redirect( REQUEST['URL1']+'/manage_workspace') return t If I don't resolve this issue, Zope won't be of much use to me (changing environments isn't very likely right now), and I'll have to go back to a static web site. Do you think running Zope as a Windows Service via the registry would help? (At least, it might help with the "logging out current user" aspect. I would be very much interested in the solution, too. If other people are not clear what the problem is, I'll restate it here: (1) You have a website "A" hosted in some web hosting service that only allows FTP. Your web hosting service does not run Zope. (2) You know Zope and can run Zope on your own machine "B". (3) You would like to design things on your own machine "B", and once they are ready and looking good, you would like to move your web content, in form of static web objects (HTML file, images), to your website "A". (Notice that you don't want to move stuff like DTML methods, external methods, etc. You want to move the "rendered" HTML pages!) This is effectively "mirroring". Your site "A" is a mirror of your Zope site "B". --------------------------------------------------------- Right now, I guess one can always do things in Zope, and then use some "offline browser" type of software to grab the entire site or subfolder, and then FTP the result up to your other website. For offline browsers, you can go to http://www.download.com/ and type in the keywords "offline browser". You have many choices. I know what these things do, but I have not played with any of them, so I don't know which one is good. Once you have grabbed what you want from your Zope site, you can then FTP it onto your site "A". ----------------------------------------------------------- That being said, I am still interested in any product that would make this process easier. It takes some time, but should not be hard to write a product that would check and update things automatically through FTP... this product should automatically add/delete files/folders on your site "A" and avoid FTPing files that have not been modified. The 'Find' machinery will not find the sub-sub-attr if the sub-attr is not traversable. Hi, I would like to use ZCatalog to catalog my ZSQL methods, in particular, I am interested in search ZSQL methods with templates containing a given table or row name. Give a ZSQL method "mySqlMethod", the raw template is in the attribute "mySqlMethod.template.raw". You can see my trouble, now. How can I catalog an index that is a subattribute of an attribute? Zope and WebDAV

Can someone explain in a little more detail how exactly you would utilize Zope with a WebDAV enabled client? For example, I found out yesterday by reading messages on this list, that IE5 adds "Web Folders" to a Windows Desktop. I had noticed this change in my explorer interface, but I wasn't at all sure what good it was. If Zope supports WebDAV, how can I make use of the Web Folder approach to manage Zope content. What can and can't I do with this facility? If I'm running a Zope server, how can I connect my Web Folder to my Zope platform? If anyone can provide some specifics on how to utilize WebDAV (particularly from an Explorer Web Folder) with a Zope server I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks. James W. If you're on the PythonMac-SIG you may have seen that GUSI 2 support is in CVS now for MacPython. We'd very much like to see Zope run on the MacOS, but it might be something best left for MacOS X which has a BSD layer and is easier to build for. Zope in Darwin, anybody? ;)

Zope and ODBC Test

Apparently the Test tab page of the ZODBC connection object does not work properly. Zope 2.1 always raises an "unpack sequence" error, no matter which platform (NT, Win98) or database backend (Oracle, Access, InterBase) you use. On the other hand there seems to be no trouble when you Test a ZSQL object, so for normal use there is no real issue once you know that. It is very frustating, however, when you're a Zope newbie (like me) and think it doesn't work at all because you cannot even make it work on the ZODBC connection test page, preventing you from trying it with a ZSQL object. I hope this is useful for other people who experienced the same thing, or are about to.
