Just a note for anyone planning to use zope / zodbc / oracle 8i with windows 2000... You need to upgrade the oracle odbc drivers to version 8.01.55 to get it to work (the old odbc drivers worked ok with nt/98).

Zope authentication mechanisms takes care of authenticating the user and constructing the user object (of course, you can create your own kind of user objects with Python code). All you as a content manager need to are create Roles that define the various 'groups' of your users, map a collection of permissions to each Role. The actions a user are allowed to do are the union of all the permissions of all their Roles. You can get down and dirty, in Python. You can completely discard Zope's authentication and acquisition mechanisms and just use it's object publishing ORB and some database modules to simulate what Java Servlets give you. Or, is there no difference? There is a difference, and that's when all the research we're doing right now starts to come into the discussion. Whereas we and others have come up with various hackish ways of working with dynamic user schemas and how users look in various system contexts, no generic, reusble mechanism has arisen because the problem is so hard, and I suspect many of the Java platforms punt on a generic reusable mechanism for the same reason. For example, lets say you had a whole Suite of applications. In this environment, you want to maintain an identy accross all applications, possible across multiple remote platforms. Each application may want each user object to look or act completely different. Some applications may consider the information they want to store about the user to be confidential, while other applicaitons may have a lower security barrier and authorization may be necessary for certain applications to allow other applications access to the information they are concerned about in the user. Is there a central LDAPish user repository? Both? Do individual applications keep localized user information? How do users synchronize possibly remote data? How does user managment propegate then to the distributed sources? Does the user or the application control the security between applications? What if two applications define two semantically identical bits of information but uses them in wildly different ways? What if you want to use legacy data (LDAP, RDBM). etc... We've been asking these questions for about a year now, and there's been alot of head scratchin'. What we're conceiving is a generic reusable mechanism which addresses at least a few of these questions. -Michel

Problem compiling Zope on Solaris 2.6

Creating folders based on a skeleton, programatically?

Hi all, I'm trying to create a user's folder programatically. This is quite easy, but I want to then create the contents based on the contents of another folder ('skel'). Once the user folder is created I'm trying to use manage_copyObjects and then manage_pasteObjects to accomplish this. The Folder structure is like this: Root +-World +-skel addUserForm looks like:  <dtml-var standard_html_header> <P>To add a new user, enter the name, password, confirmation and roles for the new user and click "Add". <br> <EM>Domains</EM> is an optional list of domains from which the user is allowed to login. </P> <FORM ACTION="addUser" METHOD="POST"> <TABLE> <TR><Th align="right">Name:</Th><TD VALIGN="TOP"><INPUT TYPE="TEXT" NAME="name" SIZE="20"></TD></TR> <TR><Th align="right">Password:</TD><TD VALIGN="TOP"><INPUT TYPE="PASSWORD" NAME="password" SIZE="40"></TD></TR> <TR><Th align="right">(Confirm):</Th><TD VALIGN="TOP"><INPUT TYPE="PASSWORD" NAME="confirm" SIZE="40"></TD></TR> <TR><TD VALIGN="TOP"></TD><TD VALIGN="TOP"><INPUT TYPE="SUBMIT" NAME="submit" VALUE="Add"></TD></TR> </TABLE> </FORM> <dtml-var standard_html_footer>  There is then an external method ('addUser') that creates the user (works ok), creates the user's folder (works ok) and then attempts to create the content based on the contents of 'skel'. This external method has these lines in (amongst others): self.manage_addFolder(id=username,title='',createPublic=0,createUserF=0) o=getattr(self,username) o.manage_pasteObjects(o.skel.manage_copyObjects(o.skel.objectIds())) So calling the addUserForm like http://localhost:8080/World/addUserForm calls addUser with the relevant details in the REQUEST. Tracking a DTML tree branch

Given a DTML tree, and a particular branch of that tree having been selected (leaf or mid-way), is there a way to determine the "path" from the root to the point selected? ie Given the tree: +-+--A | | | +--E | | | +--F | | | | | +--H | | | | | | | +--J | | | | | +--I | | | +--G | +--B And the user clicks on "H". Renaming ID errors

Dear Zope Folks, I have a ZCLASS named article. When creating an 'article', an external method is called which translated the id value so as to avoid any character which Zope does not like For example, if I input: "http://www.zope.org/helpmeplease.html" as the article id, the constructor translates this into: http%3a%2f%2fwww.zope.org%2fhelpmeplease.htm I have already created a few dozen of these articles and now realize that it is a very bad idea to namethings this way. Renaming these is normally not a problem. Now I also have a 'Catalog' which keeps track of all these new articles. I cleared the catalog, find all again within the catalog, and now try to rename and I get the following error message: Error Type: ValueError Error Value: Uncatalog of absent id '51go/Games/Bible/http%253a%252f%252fbob.com' It looks like the internal id is different from the external id that Zope presents me... ie it ran the script twice and decoded the url twice. I don't care anymore about that script and just want to rename these objects. Its strange... I can update and change the objects properties, but cannot change the article's name. Has anyone else seen this error message before? Any help or ideas on how to get around this error message would be very much appreciated. Tom
