User Authentication

My Problem: I want to do an UserAuthentication against a Database. I want the Users to set up their own accounts with parameters. 1. Should I do it with the Zope User Mechanism? And if I choose this how can I implement that. 2. Or should I do it with my own User Database authentisation. And how can I do it that way? I tyed 2.) I did a login screen. There the User can input his login and pwd. Both are checked against the DB. And I know if the user is valid or not. But what do I need to do than. I tryed: <dtml-if "pwd==xpwd"> <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('AUTHENTICATED_USER.getUser()','vinox_user')"> or without the ".getUser()" but it didn't worked. And I tryed to logout the User with setting back the <dtml-call "REQUEST.set('AUTHENTICATED_USER.getUser()','Anonymous User')"> Any solutions? Submitting a patch for a DA?

Hi, Never thought I would get the privilege of doing this... As some of you may have seen, I have been requesting help for the PostgreSQL DA, I didn't get any help, so I finally figured out that maybe no one new the answer. I went digging through the DA and think I have solved my problem. Now I have a two part question: 1. How do I submit a patch (I've never done it before)? 2. To whom do I submit the patch? Zope + PostgreSQL + BLOBS, how?

Is it possible to store, say, staff pictures in PostgreSQL and then show them on a webpage served by Zope? Like: PostgreSQL -> DA -> Zope -> webpage If it is possible; can someone give me a few guidelines or hints on how it is done? Using proxypass for virtual servers + root install

I tried posting a similar post before on egroups.com, but it didn't seem to work, as I can't find my post anywhere. I have been trying endlessly to use Zope with virtual domains with no luck. I started out with the VirtualHostFolder product by Adam Feuer and tried to install it with version 2.2.x of zope, but there is a patch script for zope that is made for version 2.0.x, and it didn't seem to work. I cantacted Adam about the product, and he said that Michel Pelletier was working on a new similar product, and he was waiting for the release of that product. Does anyone have any info on this project? Next, I tried using the apache+zope+ssl howto that was recently put out, and that didn't work (I think because of a screw up in my IP alias settings), so I scraped that install. Most recently, I spent half a day trying to use the ProxyPass method, but for some reason, I can't seem to get it to work correctly. I believe I have all the settings correct (I followed the howto precisely, with the exception that I took the / off the end of the URL in SiteRoot because I was getting a bunch of pages with two /s in the middle. Either way, it didn't work with the / at the end either. I can load the page, but it comes up unusably slow. I am using a squishdot site to test. It is located at http://www.capitaltips.com. If I access zope directly (not using SiteRoot), performance is fine. As soon as I add siteroot, and try to contact by the VirtualHost, it turns unusable (even the admin screens for that directory. I have a feeling that it is apache, which I am running on a different server, but I have no idea what the problem is. I have also been having one little problem with IP aliases. I was unable to do assign IP aliases with linuxconf, so I tried to use netcnf, which allows me to make the aliases, however I check start at boot, but they don't start at boot (and yes, I have saved the configuration). I have to manually go in and ifup eth0:0, eth0:1, etc. One more issue: I have heard all this talk about whether zope should be installed with root. What I have been doing is installing with root and then 'chown -R nobody:nobody' the zope root directory. Is there any problem with this? I also typically do this to the /home/httpd directory. Is this okay to do? Is there any problem with assigning nobody a password that way I don't have to log into root and 'su nobody' all the time? It is getting time for me to get up, and I haven't gone to bed yet! Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks. - Marcus

I'm looking for a largish data-set I can use for playing with in some query stuff I'm fiddling with. I know at one point PaulE said he had the IMDB database loaded into zope - I've not been able to find this on the web. Can anyone suggest a useful dataset? Preferably it would have: a number of different types of objects lots of cross-references between the objects various attributes for searching/sorting... ta, Anthony

Installing Zope as nonroot user (was: Zope-dev ZFormulator review...)

(moved from zope-dev) Well, let's think about this... If I untar a source Zope from Zope.org into, for instance, /home/mcdonc/Zope while logged in as a nonroot user ("mcdonc"), and run "python w_pcgi.py" on the source as the same user, I'll get a working Zope via ZServer that runs under the "mcdonc" account. So far so good, I can talk to Zope running as "mcdonc" on 8080 if I want to via ZServer. Then let's say I want to make PCGI work so that we can serve Zope content via Apache. We'll assume I configure Apache via httpd.conf's User and Group directives to run as "mcdonc" and configure it to listen on port 80 via the Port directive. I'll then set up my httpd.conf rewrite rules to point to a symlink of the PCGI shellfile at /home/mcdonc/Zope/Zope.cgi in my Apache's cgi-bin directory. We'll always need to start Apache as root if it listens on port 80. Apache will spawn off several nonroot-owned processes which serve requests that run under "mcdonc" in this case. Apache's nonroot server processes should be able to read the Zope.cgi file as they're all running as "mcdonc", and "mcdonc" owns the Zope.cgi file. So far so good. So I start Apache as root via apachectl start. I do a ps -aux to see who Apache is running as, and I have five httpd processes that show the user "mcdonc" as owner and one httpd process that shows the user "root" as owner (the "manager" process). I also see that Zope's two processes are running as "mcdonc". When I visit http://127.0.0.1/Zope/manage, I am able to log in as superuser, etc. So we're successful. I've been doing this as I've been writing it to be 100% sure that this is the case... So, while it seems advisable to untar Zope as a nonroot user (so your files don't end up getting owned by one of the Pelletier clan -- pretty funny!), I don't think it's a requirement to install Zope (via "python w_pcgi.py") as root if you want to serve Zope content from Apache using PCGI. I've done the equivalent under Netscape Enterprise Server, too, and it works. I haven't set up Zope using FastCGI, so I have to claim utter ignorance there. SiteSummary Import Fails

I am trying to import the Site Summary product into a fresh Zope installation, but when I hit the import button I get the following traceback. Does anyone have any idea what the problem might be? ! Of course, my previous post about fixing the Factory should not be taken to mean that I actually understand why it works now. In fact, quite the opposite. Emboldened by this small step forward, I tried creating a new type of ThingProduct, with more or less the same results as before: Can't add the new type of Thing to the Place. This time, the factory isn't broke (which was probably something I did trying to fix the original problem).
