DateTime bug (and ZSybase buglet)

Hi there - (I've taken the liberty of also submitting these bugs to the Collector...) I think I found a bug with ZSybaseDA (the newest version) - here's the deal: I have a table in Sybase with a DateTime field. When I get a time back from it, the value of the field gets set in sy_occbf.c to something like: (2000, 2, 21, 22, 31, 59.63) The second value is being set to double (on purpose, looking at the sy_occbf.c code). The problem with this is that DateTime doesn't correctly validate floating point hour/min/seconds. The documentation string seems to say that DateTime can take (from the DateTime 1.43 doc string) "floating point, positive or negative offsets in units of hours, minutes, and days," for the fourth, fifth and sixth arguments - should this instead be "positive integer values for hours, minutes, and positive floating point values for seconds"? I think the latter might be simpler and easier to understand... Anyways, right now what DateTime is closer to this anyway - it validates times by calling self._validTime(h, m, s), which is defined: def _validTime(self,h,m,s): return h>=0 and h<=23 and m>=0 and m<=59 and s>=0 and s<=59 I was lucky enough to stumble on the case where 59 < s < 60; this could be taken care of by: def _validTime(self,h,m,s): return h>=0 and h<=23 and m>=0 and m<=59 and s>=0 and s<60.0 Of course, it's obvious that negative hour or minute offsets are also not going to work... The Sybase DA end of the thing - as I started out by saying, I noticed all this because the results that Sybase returned didn't convert correctly. Specifically, an exception was raised where SybaseDA was in the middle of handling a fetched result set: (in db.py, DA.query()...) if type(v) is TupleType: v=apply(converters[t], v) Because an exception is raised in the middle of fetching a result set, the command structure still has results left to fetch - this makes the next call to cm.ct_command() fail - Sybase says, on the next query: ct_command(): user api layer: external error: This routine cannot be called while results are pending for a command that has been sent to the server. Which happens because we never got to cancel the previous result set. How about running the conversions in a try/except, for safety, like: try: if type(v) is TupleType: v=apply(converters[t], v) except: cm.ct_cancel(sy_occ.CS_CANCEL_ALL) raise Error("Results field conversion error: converter=%s, v=%s" % \ (str(converters[t]), str(v))) I don't think there is anything else, but anything that might throw an exception in the error processing loop should also probably be wrapped to call ct_cancel so that the command structure is ready to go on the next call. Well, that's all. This'll be in the Collector as soon as I can write it, too. -Brian Hooper

Apache? Proxy? PCGI? ZServer?

I have been playing with Zope for months and am a few weeks away from putting a full Zopified site into production. I have a dedicated box so I can do whatever I want in terms of configurations and after reading everything I can get my hands on as possible solutions (I have read http://www.zope.org/Members/guy_davis/install_routes) 1) ZServer Only - This should be the simplest and fastest. The drawback I see is that I will not be able to do SSL or have very good logs to run webserver statistics software on (MKStats, Analog, etc). 2) ZServer Behind Apache + Proxy - This is the second fastest and is relatively easy (have done it once). I get my Apache logs, SSL (I think) but It require SiteAcesss product which could (and seems to) conflict with other products/functionality. 3) Apache, FAST PCGI (Zope.cgi) + ZServer - This is the slowest of them all (a new process for every request) but I most people are using this and allows for all sorts of other goodies that Apache can do (Virtual hosts, logs, SSL, etc). Is there anything I am missing or does anyone have some suggestions/comments on implementations? Thanks, JMA

TinyTables

Hi, Did anyone already worked with tinyTables? If yes, do you know how can I add some information from a form to the tinytables? What I have is: In the TinyTables, the columns are: N.º , Name, Address, Home_phone, Cel_phone, Birthday_Date The code that I has implemented in the data textarea is: "<dtml-var fname> <dtml-var lname>" , "<dtml-var address> <dtml-var fzip>-<dtml-var restzip> <dtml-var localzip" , "<dtml-var home_phone>" , "<dtml-var cel_phone>" , "<dtml-var year_date> / <dtml-var mes_date> / <dtml-var dia_date>" As you know, the N.º column is assumed as index. The fname, lname, address, fzip, restzip, localzip, home_phone, cel_phone, year_date, mes_date and dia_date, are the names of the fields in a form. When I push the add button in the form, it will call the tinytables and will execute the code above. I'm calling this tinytable like this: <dtml-call "tab_registos">, that is the name of the tinytable. What is happen is that this isn't working. malformed Acess rule breaks zope

zopistas I was trying to rewrite the access rule, as per evan's suggestion. I was asking for a slice that wasn't there. Nothing would then come up: any page I tried to go to told me that I had an index error. it wouldn't acknowledge my change that should have fixed it. So i went in with __no_before_traverse__ which worked (whew). Then i tried to edit the method. No dice. Deleting it, however, did work. Just thought I'd mention it, I dunno why it wouldn't fix. ~ethan

medusa and RESPONSE.redirects

I guess like me, many people are using methods which are "terminated" logically with a call to RESPONSE.redirect - this is what the prototype ZClass add function does for example. I never thought about it before, but checking some debug.log output, I found complaints about requests not ending which I immediately recognised as being methods which use redirects to avoid the "saved, click here to continue" type of unpleasant user experience..... Does zope's server mind the fact that potentially large numbers of transactions of this type (which appear not to end) might accumulate under load ? Might this induce any instability or resource leakage ?

Storing images in a database (sybase)

What Loren was explaining was a qualifier for ZPublisher's type marshaling mechanism. For example, in a form you can have: <input name="bob:int"> And ZPublisher will marshal the value from this input into a python integer (if it can, if it can't, it raises an error). 'method' is another qualifier that can be used, and it's a bit magical. Suppose you had a Folder called 'foo' with three DTML Methods in them called 'A', 'B', and 'C'. In an HTML form you could have the following code: <form action="URLtoFolder" method="POST"> <input type="submit" name="A:method" value="This will call A"> <input type="submit" name="B:method" value="This will call B"> <input type="submit" name="C:method" value="This will call C"> </form> Pressing a different button each time will call a different method. This is also quite a bit more graceful and flexible than a bunch of <dtml-if> statements to determine which button was pressed. -Michel
